1. The difference between winning and generally requires a multi-faceted and nuanced analysis. This week, though, I feel like one word tells a lot of the story. That word is TACKLING.

2. The Rams' tackling was, in a word, bad.

3. Missed tackles by the defensive backs allowed the Eagles to convert third downs and extend drives.

4. The inability to make a tackle in the backfield in the rare cases when they were able to get to Jalen Hurts allowed the Eagles to extend drives.

5. The inability to tackle Hurts when he ran the ball allowed him to convert third downs and extend drives.

6. Are you seeing the pattern yet?

7. I actually think that Rahim Morris devised a good game plan. For most of the game, the defense kept the Eagles from making big plays, and had opportunities to get off the field. But, again.... that requires solid tackling.

8. I'm getting a bit tired of commentators talking about teams "neutralizing" Aaron Donald. Donald is the best defensive player of his generation, but he's still only one human being. If an excellent offensive line gameplans to stop him, and double/triple teams him constantly, he's going to have trouble making plays.

9. The real issue here is that the Rams don't have enough pass rushers to make opposing offenses pay for dedicating so much attention to Donald. Byron Young is showing signs of being a guy who can do so, but we need more. Michael Hoecht isn't that guy (and he's a liability setting the edge and in coverage).

10. Allowing the Eagles to drive the field and score a TD at the end of the half was awful. The Rams' inability to finish off the first half has been a recurrent problem, and it's getting to the point of being inexcusable. It really changed the complexion of the game. Derion Kendrick played a big part (though I thought the PI was questionable), but I'm not going to blame one guy (and he did save us 4 points with a key 3rd down stop in the first half).

11. Given that the offense was shut out in the second half, I should be criticizing them, right?

12. Well, to a degree. There were definitely some missed opportunities, including a couple of dropped passes and some deep passes that looked promising, but didn't connect.

13. That said, the offense didn't get a lot of opportunities due to the defense's failure to get off the field. The Eagles held the ball for over 37 minutes. That's going to make it tough for any offense.

14. The "Brotherly Shove" is BS. Its not a football play, and should be banned. Its particularly frustrating when the forward progress is stopped, and the "shove" then gives the Eagles what amounts to a second chance. Not a fan of this gimmick.

15. On the positive side, welcome back Cooper Kupp! He and Matthew Stafford were not 100% in synch, but he looked healthy and ready to be a factor.

16. We also saw the possibilities of a Kupp/Puka Nacua/Tutu Atwell trio. Going forward, that's going to be a strength of the team.

17. Kupp gets my Offensive Player of the Week award with his 8 reception, 118 yard performance in his first game in nearly a year.

18. Given how I ripped the tackling, the Defensive Playter of the Week goes to the one guy who made a lot of tackles: Ernest Jones, 15 tackles (10 solo) and 3 TFL.

19. The schedule gets a bit more favorable after a killer opening 5 games. The Cardinals are better than expected, but very beatable. The Steelers pass rush is fierce, but their offense is suspect. This team has a chance to get to 4-3. That doesn't sound so bad, does it?

20. Rational perspective: the Rams' 3 losses are to teams that were in last year's "Final Four." Not an excuse, and we (and the Rams) should not be satisfied. Keep moving forward.

Seeing how the defense can make it look easy for an opposing offense to move the ball with very little time left in the half, I gotta think we're gonna lose games late if we have a one score lead under two minutes.

Philly is considered one of the elite teams. But this was a winnable game if the defense didn't make those mistakes. Overall, 23 points isn't a bad day by a defense. But the things you see bad teams do in close games tends to rear its ugly head.

The tackling wasn't great but I will push back on the defense being the reason we lost this game. They were not.

We held THAT offense to 23 points despite being on the field way too long.

The Eagles are a great team so losing to them isn't the end of the world - but the offense was disappointing. Hard to have much of an issue with McVay though, because receivers were open all game. I thought the game plan was solid.

Stafford missed throws under pressure and the OL struggled in the second half.

I am sick of great DLs neutering this offense. The biggest difference between us and Philly isn't the WRs, the QB, the run game the secondary or the front 7 - I think we match or exceed them in all those so far this year (in terms of play) - the big difference is they have the best OL in the league.

So this off-season fuck pass rush, fuck CB - I want all FA dollars and first and second round picks going to this OL.

The Tush Push should only be allowed in San Fran, AFTER the games are over.

Oof I disagree so much about the defense. Our offense had the ball three times with a chance to take the lead. This team was built for the offense to be great and the defense to be average at best. Yet the offense had the ball three times in the second half down by one possession and did nothing. That is the reason we lost here.

All things are not equal here. The guys that are paid are almost all on offense. They couldn't drive for a FG in the second half against a team that Sam Howell torched a week ago.

That is why we lost. Given the context, our defense played a hell of a game.

Re 14: Assisting a runner is illegal in at least the HS and possibly the college ranks. Ironically, the NFL needs to catch up to the lower leagues.

I agree that the offense missed some opportunities. I think the bigger issue was their lack of opportunities due to the Eagles holding the ball for 37+ minutes, and the defense giving up the lead at the end of the first half.

For me, the atrocious tackling was by far the the most critical deficiency today. Yes, blocking, the run game, some drops and some misses, and our few QB hits/sacks were all issues, but they would not have cost the Rams this game if they just tackled better.

The Rams just couldn’t get off the field because they kept failing to make tackles when they had the opportunities. There WERE some pressures. There WERE some stops behind the sticks. There WERE plays that should have been stopped in their tracks.

Too many missed tackles cost the Rams this game.

We have a real nice 3 headed monster at WR. I expect them to really click with Stafford as the season goes on.

To illustrate my point, the Rams had a total of 8 offensive drives today (including the final one that was after the outcome was decided).

By contrast, against the Bengals, we had 12 drives. That was an example of the offense having opportunities but failing (due to the battered OL, mostly).

Today, the offense didn’t get enough time on the field because the defense didn’t win on 3rd down enough.

20RT footnote…

Nice to see Stafford showing no ill effects from last week’s hip issue.

The Eagles had the same amount drives and were able to score more than 14 points. The offense didn't get many opportunities because they could only manage to get 5 1st downs in the 2nd half.

Hoecht is not suited for edge and Durant can't tackle. Those two seem to be part if the defense weakest links. Durant can be coaches. Hoecht is just being mis-cast

Yes… because they have better overall talent on offense than we do and don’t need as many opportunities (or, put another way, we have a lower margin for error).

This is also why the defense’s failure at the end of the first half was so huge. Take that away, and it’s a very different ballgame.

I agree except I would again put this game on the offense. The defense really played a decent game today and held Philly to just 23 points. Problem is we didn't even score in the second half. There's reasons for this, missed opportunities, some bad play calling and Mathew Stafford getting a little happy w the deep ball. I do love his gun slinger mentality but there are times where he could and should play it safer.

Tackling was an issue but honestly it's young defense with lots of rookies and second year players. It's gonna happen.

Looking at the points is misleading. Philly’s offense drove the length of the field on most of their possessions. They chewed clock and had an outrageous 13 for 18 on 3rd down conversion. They could never get off the field.

Right, because they made the most of their offensive opportunities. The rams however did not.

We gave up 454 yards and forced only one punt.

That’s not a good defensive performance.

Final score was 23-14. 9 points not 14.

Somehow the offense was fine in the 1st half. 3 drives, 7 1st downs and 14 points. Compared to the 2nd, 5 drives, 5 1st downs, 0 points.

Seems like PHI made the right adjustments and our team didn't.
