Dallas Renegades vs. Los Angeles Wildcats

Two teams looking for their first win of the 2020 XFL season will square off at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, on Sunday afternoon. The Dallas Renegades (0-1) will hit the road to take on the Los Angeles Wildcats (0-1). This is a critical game for both West Division teams since they can ill afford to start their seasons in an 0-2 hole.

The Renegades dropped a hard-fought 15-9 contest in their home opener against the St. Louis BattleHawks last weekend. The Renegades did not do a good enough job of keeping drives alive on offense. Dallas was just 1-for-10 on third down, while the defense allowed St. Louis to convert on half (6-of-12) of its opportunities.

Philip Nelson completed 33-of-42 passes in place of the injured Landry Jones, but that only went for 209 yards. The problem for Nelson was his inability to punish the BattleHawks secondary by hitting deep balls down the field. They also had trouble stopping the run; St. Louis rumbled for 191 yards on 42 attempts, which can’t continue if the Renegades want to contend in the West.

Los Angeles at least got off to a good start down in Houston by jumping out to a 14-6 lead in the second quarter of their game. However, the Wildcats were not able to make it last, as they ended up losing 37-17 to the Roughnecks. Wide receiver Nelson Spruce was the bright spot for the Los Angeles offense with 11 receptions for 103 yards. Charles Kanoff was inconsistent filling in for an injured Josh Johnson at quarterback, going 21-for-40 through the air for 214 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

Additionally, the Wildcats' defense did not have any answers for Houston quarterback P.J. Walker, who completed 23 of 39 passes for 272 yards, four touchdowns, and just one pick. The unit's one bright spot came against the run, holding the Roughnecks to 50 yards on the ground.

Spread: Renegades -4.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Dallas offense

The good news for the Renegades is that they will have Landry Jones at quarterback after missing the opener with a knee injury. Jones will probably try and connect with Flynn Nagel, who caught six passes for 43 yards last week. Even with Jones' return, Dallas needs to look at running the ball more. Even though the ground game totaled just 50 yards last week, the Renegades averaged 4.8 yards per carry with two of them going for at least 13 yards. With Jones at quarterback, this offense isn't going to run the ball 45-50 times in a game, but if it can maximize the 15-20 rushing attempts and average close to 100-110 yards, it will help keep defenses honest. As for throwing the football, this should be the game where fans get a better look at coordinator Hal Mumme's Air Raid passing attack. Expect Mumme to dial up a couple of early deep shots by Jones to test the Wildcats defense.

2. Los Angeles defense

One thing that has helped Vince McMahon build his WWE empire is having soap opera-type storylines for wrestling fans. It appears that this has carried over to his XFL as Los Angeles head coach/general manager Winston Moss has already shaken things up on his team after just one game. Following last week's loss to Houston, Moss fired defensive coordinator Pepper Johnson and then followed that up by trading linebacker Anthony Johnson, who served as a team captain last week. This level of dysfunction should give the ABC broadcasting crew plenty of things to talk to about. It also will be interesting to see how the Wildcats defense responds mentally in the face of adversity should it strike early in this game. Will the defense quit on Moss or will they rise to the occasion?

3. Turnover battle

The Renegades had a plus-two turnover margin against the BattleHawks last week. Dallas was not able to convert those two turnovers into many points, which proved to be costly at the end of the day. After missing last week, Jones needs to do his part to not force things and avoid the inopportune mistake. The Wildcats finished dead even in the turnover department last week, turning the ball over twice on offense but also producing a pair of takeaways. Josh Johnson is expected to start at quarterback so his presence may help the offense settle down but he too must be wary of taking too many chances with the football. If either defense is able to come up with a big turnover it could swing the momentum in this game.

Final Analysis

Home teams went 3-1 last week in the XFL, so I would expect Los Angeles to hang in there for a while offensively against a salty Dallas defense. However, with the instability on that side of the ball for the Wildcats, they will wear down in the second half against the Renegades' passing attack that will look quite different than last week with Landy Jones at the helm. Look for Dallas to improve to 1-1 after picking up a nice win on the road.

Prediction: Renegades 26, Wildcats 18

St. Louis BattleHawks vs. Houston Roughnecks

While Week 2 of the 2020 XFL season will start with a matchup between two of its top teams, it will conclude with a matchup of arguably it's two best quarterbacks. That's exactly what we'll see when the Houston Roughnecks (1-0) host the St. Louis BattleHawks (1-0) this Sunday.

Both teams put together impressive debuts in their respective season openers. The Roughnecks got it done on both sides of the ball as they defeated the Los Angeles Wildcats, 37-17. Meanwhile, the BattleHawks won a hard-fought and tightly contested matchup on the road against the Dallas Renegades, 15-9.

The BattleHawks look to shine on the Sunday evening stage once again, while the Roughnecks are hoping to dominate for the second straight week. Expect plenty of social media highlights from this game.

Three Things to Watch

1. Walker and Ta'amu steal the show

Roughnecks quarterback P.J. Walker and BattleHawks signal-caller Jordan Ta'amu were both nominated for the XFL's "Star of the Week" award after their standout performances last week, with Walker receiving the honor via Twitter vote. Both men put on quite the show in Week 1. And when all was said and done, they collectively totaled 481 passing yards, 103 rushing yards, and five total touchdowns. Walker is being praised for his consistency and athleticism, while Ta'amu is being recognized for taking St. Louis' on what essentially was game-winning drive last week.

Walker led an offense that totaled 315 yards and averaged 5.7 yards per play. Each of their scoring drives was conducted in less than eight plays, and they had six drives of 30 or more yards. The Roughnecks overcame an early 14-6 deficit and were on cruise control the rest of the way. The Wildcats defense performed so poorly down the stretch that defensive coordinator Pepper Johnson was relieved of his duties on Monday.

The BattleHawks only scored 15 points against Dallas, but they stood out in other areas. They posted the second-most total yards in Week 1 (374), ran the second-most plays (71), and had the second-most third-down conversions (6-of-12) while leading the league in total first downs (24). Seven of their 11 drives went for 20 or more yards with four of those drives going more than 50 yards. What the BattleHawks lack in points they certainly make up for it in efficiency with Ta'amu under center. It wouldn't be surprising if Walker and Ta'amu are looking at Star of the Week honors again.

2. Both teams can play defense as well

Although both teams lit up our television, computer, and mobile screens with what they did on offense last week, they also put the hammer down on defense. Houston held Los Angeles scoreless in the second half, sacked both quarterbacks (Chad Kanoff, Jalan McClendon) a total of five times, posted eight tackles for a loss, and leads the XFL in both quarterback hits (10) and pass deflections (11).

As for the BattleHawks; they held the Hal Mumme-coordinated Dallas offense to just three field goals, forced them to punt four times, surprising a Renegades team that was considered a favorite heading into the season. The big plays were there too with three takeaways, four sacks, and seven tackles for a loss.

Two players to watch for on this side of the ball are Roughnecks defensive end Kony Ealy (3 tackles, 0.5 sacks, 4 QB hits, 2 TFLs), and BattleHawks linebacker Terrence Gavin (9 tackles, 2 TFLs, 1 sacks vs. Dallas).

3. The home fans have responded positively

A total of 17,815 fans in Houston showed up to watch the Roughnecks defeat Los Angeles last week in 40,000-seat TDECU Stadium. That's not a bad turnout for a startup franchise. Although the BattleHawks have yet to play a home game — the first professional football game in St. Louis since the Rams left in 2015 — almost 2.5 million fans watched them defeat Dallas. The St. Louis market posted a 7.4 television rating, which bodes very well for a team that's trying to renew faith in a fan base that's seen two NFL franchises come and go through the years.

Final Analysis

Both defenses will keep the scoring from getting too out of hand, but this will be an exciting game to watch. Each offense will have its moment but the Roughnecks have a little bit more firepower and will emerge the winner in a close game.

Prediction: Roughnecks 28, BattleHawks 25

They were fun to watch offensively. They ran the ball, and Ta’amu looks like he could be fun to watch.

I’d run him even more than we saw in week 1....

A short 10-game season... chaos a running QB provides... seems like a huge XFL advantage.

The defense did well too. Slowed the run, the secondary could be a strength.

So hard to tell.

I feel Houston might be the best team, but being a avid St. Louis BattleHawk fan Head Coach Jonathan Hayes will have them ready. The BattleHawk defense is very good

QB Jordan Ta'amu runs well when the play breaks down and I believe the BattleHawks have an excellent running game led by RB Matt Jones. Ta"amu also threw a couple of great passes, especially on the TD pass, but June Jones runs a great offense, so we'll see if the BattleHawks can hold up on the road once again as BattleHawk fans including yours truly, cannot wait for their home opener next week in the dome.

Turnover fest early in this game. That was a terrible pass on the int by Landry.

I wonder if viewership is going to tank, the defences are way ahead of the offenses.

The games have all mostly been close. Even if this is low scoring.
