Looking at overthecap.com and sporttrac.com and OTC has us at 29 mill and ST has us at 48 mill? I know they usually have a bit of a difference but that is a bit much! lol

I'm thinking we should be 45-48 mill next year right? Tell me I'm not crazy! lol

p.s. Looks like we can add 1-3 pretty damned good experienced players to help us out next year! Hoping we pick up a DE or CB!

I've seen it at 56.6 million in cap room and believe that is closer to the truth.

Everything I've seen and heard has them around 50 mil give or take. I also heard they do some things to increase it if they choose to. If they do I doubt it will be a lot. They don't want to get in the same situation they had last offseason. Although they did a good job maximizing what they had to work with. They don't have as many holes to fill this time around.

From Spotrac:

LOS ANGELES RAMS

They did it to us again. Just when we thought the wheels were about to come off this train, LA pulls it together, easily finds their way into the postseason, and resuscitates all previous hope. The core remains intact contractually (Stafford, Kupp, Donald), though there are some decisions to be made both in the secondary & especially across the offensive line this winter. The Rams are operating with around $48M of Top 51 cap space right now.

Cap Clearing Possibilities:
  • Process a full base salary conversion on QB Matthew Stafford, freeing up $23.8M of cap when factoring in 2 void years.
  • Process a full base salary + $5M roster bonus conversion on WR Cooper Kupp, freeing up $15M of cap when factoring in 2 void years.
  • Convert TE Tyler Higbee’s $5.5M guaranteed roster bonus into signing bonus, then release him, freeing up $8.2M of cap when factoring in 3 void years.
  • Release OT Joseph Noteboom, freeing up $5M of cap
  • Release OL Brian Allen, freeing up $4.1M of cap
  • Process a full base salary + $5M roster bonus conversion on DT Aaron Donald, freeing up $11M of cap when factoring in 4 void years.

The Stafford move should be a slam dunk.
I'm much more interested in acquiring a critical amount of talent for the next 2-3 seasons than I am worried about dead cap in the future.
Noteboom and Allen depend on whether they get acceptable replacements in the draft...
Higbee? I don't see them doing that.
Donald.. maybe.. that's probably a "break glass for incredible opportunity" move...
And Kupp.. I probably don't.. because if he has another year like this one.. you have to move on after next season, most likely.

Agreed. We will likely have a rookie QB in the near future as our starter, which is obviously favorable for the cap.

This makes me want to re-sign Dotson, Robinson, Witherspoon, Went and Fuller (assuming Fuller would be cheap) AND add a CB and EDGE in FA. Then we go into the draft with every need filled

A few things are different. One there's a 1 player difference otc shows 50 players spotrac 51 players. Another thing is that it looks like spotrac is accounting for the almost $8 million rollover twice. They start at a base cap of $242.5 million and count us as starting cap at $250 million. Then a little down their chart on the right list the roll over again?

Just a quick browsing of the contracts listed otc has some contracts as a bigger cap hit than spotract does. I'd wager only the team and the leagues know the exact number but

Spotrac has it at $48M but that has NOT been up-dated.

The off-season cap space is off the top-51 contracts but the Rams only had 36 players under contract as of Monday.

The $48M was based on those 36 players; and does Not reflect the players signed this week.

15 players were signed to reserve/futures contracts since Tuesday. That brings the total to 51 under contract.

Those fifteen contracts (all between $800,000 - $900,000) have to be added; and that's about another $12M.

Once Spotrac up-dates, the $48M will come-down to about $36M

OTC has been updated and reflects the additional contracts. OTC has the Rams current cap space at just under $30M.

You can see all of this on the Rams' page for Spotrac and OTC.

Both sites list the players signed to futures contracts only OTC is counting that contract value. Technically they won't be counted against the cap but yes they will be replaced by players on the active roster.

I think they have enough space to where they can chase whoever they want. I'd really like a couple starters from this FA period. If Dotson is one of them fine. If not then maybe get a LT or a legit defender but filling a couple holes with real veteran additions feels necessary to me. And even then I'm hoping they add two or three low end types to fill out the roster and hope one of them hits.

Then hit that draft hard and position to fill what is left. We have a lot of needs on this roster, especially on defense. Really this comes down to who actually is allowed to hit the FA market but hoping we have two big signings in us.

Think the point is ... Right Now ... the Rams have about $32M of cap space before any restructuring or releases.

Also before tender offers to restricted free agents. And there has to be cap space set aside for the Draft Class.

What they can open up, in addition to the $48 million.

From spotrac

I think that adds up to an additional $67 million.. and.. no, they aren’t going all of that.
The Stafford thing seems like a slam dunk, though.

Wish that was true but it's not consistent with two cap sites ... Spotrac and Over-the-Cap.

Maybe the Rams will do a ton of aggressive restructurings, like @Kupped suggests above.

I’d probably do Stafford + Kupp.. and the Noteboom & Allen decisions would probably be made subsequent to the draft. If you lose them.. you’re using that money on vet deals late in offseason.

That adds up to 80 mil of USEABLE cap space.

As I’ve said.. they’re going big.

I’m not good at the mechanics of void years, etc..
but I just don’t see a catastrophic cap year coming down the road as a result of those moves.

Will there be dead cap at some point? Sure. But nothing unmanageable with a growing cap.
