The NFL finally reached its breaking point with Vontaze Burfict.
For the first time in league history, it suspended a player a full season for a dirty hit on the field.
Burfict was suspended for the rest of the season for a hit on Indianapolis Colts tight end Jack Doyle. Doyle was getting up after a short catch, and Burfict nailed him with a blatant helmet-to-helmet hit. He was ejected.
[Watch live NFL games on the Yahoo Sports app, here's how]
The hit itself wasn’t worthy of a year-long suspension, but Burfict’s history was. In 2016 and 2017 he got suspensions for headhunting hits that ended up being three games each. The NFL must have figured those suspensions hadn’t changed Burfict’s behavior, so the league decided to ban him for the rest of the season.
NFL: ‘Your contact was unnecessary, flagrant’
In a statement, the NFL said this of Burfict’s suspension:
“Vontaze Burfict of the Oakland Raiders has been suspended without pay for the remainder of the 2019 season, as well as any postseason games, for repeated violations of unnecessary roughness rules, including in Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.
“NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan issued the suspension for a violation of Rule 12, Article 10, which states that: ‘It is a foul is a player lowers his head to initiate and make contact with his helmet against an opponent.’
“In his letter to Burfict, Runyan wrote: ‘There were no mitigating circumstances on this play. Your contact was unnecessary, flagrant and should have been avoided. For your actions, you were penalized and disqualified from the game. Following each of your previous rule violations, you were warned by me and each of the jointly-appointed appeal officers that future violations would result in escalated accountability measures. However, you have continued to flagrantly abuse rules designed to protect yourself and your opponents from unnecessary risk.’
“Under the collective bargaining agreement, the suspension may be appealed within three business days. Appeals are heard and decided by either Derrick Brooks or James Thrash, the officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA to decide appeals of on-field player discipline.”
NFL came down hard on Vontaze Burfict
The NFL has given suspensions of at least a year to players for arrests, gambling, repeated substance abuse policy violations, but never for a hit on the field.
The only similar punishment would be the ones for the New Orleans Saints’ bounty program. The long suspensions that came out of that were for the plot to injure opponents more than any particular hit, however.
This punishment is unique in NFL history. And Burfict earned it by being a menace on the field, repeatedly breaking the league’s rules to eliminate dirty hits from the game. From dangerous hits on then-Steelers receiver Antonio Brown in a playoff game, or Chiefs fullback Anthony Sherman in a preseason game, or even diving at then-Bengals teammate Giovani Bernard’s knees in a practice, Burfict’s reputation is well earned.

Burfict has a long history
Burfict was a problem in college too. That’s why, despite a lot of talent, he went undrafted. He became a good player for the Cincinnati Bengals, but his dirty play has always been an issue.
Burfict’s history of dirty play is long. He racked up more than $4.2 million in fines, counting lost game checks due to suspensions, before this latest violation according to Spotrac. Including a four-game suspension for a violation of the league’s performance enhancing drug policy, he had missed 10 NFL games due to suspension. Burfict signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Raiders this offseason.
Raiders opponents can rest easy, at least for the rest of this season. They won’t have to worry about Burfict looking to head-hunt them anymore in 2019.

You beat me to it. That dude targeted the helmet. He should at least get fined.

I was so excited when MP was returning it to the house, "Back in the game" were my thoughts. Then when he was targeted by the a-hole I immediately stopped being excited and said a quick prayer. I thought I might not see him get up. That is how bad that hit was.

I hope they remove that dude from the league, it was clear, intentional and extremely dangerous.

Good, fuck that guy. Should be banned.

As for Peters hit, that was ridiculous too and deserves a suspension and fine. It should have been a flag and given us our two point conversion try at the 1 and maybe we’d have ran the damn ball in. Not sure changes outcome but you never know.

I watched Rosen (Buffalo) get a shot to the head yesterday from a Pats player, but there were fouls on both teams...offensive holding and the personal foul Rosen left the game for good as a result of the hit, but because of the holding call, the Pats didnt get penalized. IMO the personal foul for something like that should still be penalized with yardage difference (15 for PF- 10 for holding= 5 yds.) and should be automatic 1st down.

Burfict should have received this type of ban long ago. Hopefully no other team tries to bring this guy back on the field to purposely injure someone next year.

The league and the teams need to be careful. With this piece of shit's record... if he's allowed to continue to do this to other players... they're gonna be found liable too when he does it again. If I was that colts player... my attorney would be suing Burfict, the rai-duhs, and the NFL. Nobody could possibly say that they didn't know that this idiot wouldn't repeat this behavior... the team and the league are guilty too now.

I was watching redzone yesterday and I saw the Burfict hit live. It's the worst hit I think I've ever seen in a football game. This suspension is very well deserved.

Yeah, league needs to make an example and nip this in the ass now and ban him. It’s one thing to target like he does but then ALWAYS shows no remorse and brags about it. The instant he was shown smiling and blowing kisses as he ran off the field in Indy should be the instant Goodell decided to finally ban him.

That pos has been doing this going all the way back to his college playing days.

Enough already.

Not only that Scots he wandered off blowing kisses to the Colts fans when he was ejected. Absolute tosser.

I saw that and it was fucked up. He should be kicked out of the NFL.

@Selassie I there could be some liability you're right. And he has such a long history it wouldn't be difficult to convince a jury that there was intent and he has a problem with trying to hurt people.

Several suspension have not curbed the behavior. That is an easy case to make.

These helmet-to-helmet hits should warrant at least a 4-game suspension regardless of intention. Get players in the habit of not lowering their heads to weaponize their helmets. For Burfict's case, he just needs to be banned from playing another down; it's clear he's playing with the intent to cause head injuries. That hit he made against AB a few years back shows it.

Doyle was totally defenseless and not going to go anywhere. Burfict went in with his head at his head. Burfict got what he deserved. Surprise any team went after him even the desperate Raidas. Can't imagine him getting another chance to play.

Not. Even. Close.

The hit on Peters was worse and if you watch some of those "Jacked Up" videos the NFL used to allow from ESPN, I think with Tom Jackson... yeah. Way worse hits have happened.

The hits on Peters and Rosen were egregious and if there are no fines/suspensions, I'll be upset.

Not only does Burfict need to be banned forever...but he needs to forfeit his entire salary this year to charity.

Except he isn't getting any salary. Part of the suspension is that it is without pay.

So there's that...
