Our scouts liked Cody throughout the draft process and we had a draft eligible grade on him, like many of our undrafted players. We intentionally left many of our roster spots open so we could sign more UDFA's this year to give them a chance to compete. It is always hard to tell without pads who is going to make a run at a roster spot, but the great thing about our coaching staff and personnel staff is they work hand in hand to create maximum opportunities for our UDFA's. We have our coaches and position cross check scouts sit and watch tape together of players we think that won't get drafted and then they work the phones together after the draft to try and land the players.
We had greater success this year getting players because of the fact that we had 7 undrafteds make our 53 man roster last season. The fact that we let all of our players compete for spots means that a UDFA will get a great chance to come in and make the roster. No better point was made to that fact when Hekker threw a fake punt out of our own end zone against the 49ers to Rodney McLeod, another undrafted free agent. Who in the league would let two undrafteds run a fake punt out of their own end zone! That kind of opportunity, more than the money, more than anything else, allows us to be a top destitation for undrafteds.
