Lamar Jackson Conspiracy Theory Swirling On Social Media Today

Lamar Jackson was given the non-exclusive franchise tag by the Baltimore Ravens earlier today.

Unlike the exclusive franchise tag, Jackson being placed on its non-exclusive counterpart grants other teams the option to now negotiate deals with him. Should he agree to a contract with another team, Baltimore would then have the ability to match the deal or deny it and receive two compensatory first-round draft picks.

The problem?

Teams appear to be dropping out of the Lamar sweepstakes at an alarming rate.

In the few hours since the tag was applied, reports have surfaced that multiple QB-needy teams will not be pursing a deal with Jackson. The Panthers, Raiders, Commodes and Falcons were reportedly among them.

Roughly an hour and a half past the NFL's 4:00 p.m. ET franchise tag deadline today, former NFL Live host Trey Wingo offered a stunning potential reason for the apparent disinterest - collusion.

"Spoke with sources at NFLPA and they’re keeping a very close eye on the Lamar situation for that very reason. Regarding the C word 'there’s constant concern about that.'"

While it's important to note that the collusion talk is just a rumor at this point, it's shocking to see so many teams not interested in even talking to the 2019 NFL MVP.

What's potentially more concerning, though, is the fact that Wingo is far from the only voice in the NFL world to bring up the C-word today.

Popular NFL YouTuber Brett Kollman posted a tweet earlier this afternoon that hinted at a similar line of thinking.

"Dolphins out now too. Owners might has well be linking arms on this one. They want to make it clear that Haslam’s actions are not normal."

Longtime NFL defensive back Ryan Clark voiced his concerns this Tuesday, as well.

"So a former league MVP, 4th in overall wins since entering the league, entering his 5th year & the same age as incoming rookie Stetson Bennet is free to negotiate… but all these teams know before speaking to him that they’re good? Yea right there’s no collusion!"

Once again noting that talks of collusion are just rumors to this point, the current theory is that NFL owners don't want to give out a deal similar to the one Deshaun Watson received from the Browns last season.

His fully-guaranteed $230 million contract seems to have reset the quarterback market in a way owners aren't comfortable with, according to the theory.

We will continue to monitor this evolving situation and provide updates as they become available.

now owners of 31 other teams don't want to give out a contract like that and lamar wants a contract like that, suddenly it's collusion.

Its likely to be a combination of factors. If I'm a GM, I'm thinking that three recent QB mega deals are already looking like mistakes based on performance and availability (Watson, Murray, Wilson). GMs may just be reticent about making another high profile mistake. I appreciate Lamar is an ex-MVP but his game isn't without question marks. This isn't Mahomes or prime Brady we are talking about.

He has been injured several times and its directly related to his playing style. If you could guarantee that the guy was going to give you 17+ games of availability every season then this conversation isn't happening IMO because the Ravens would have made a deal. The Ravens are clearly worried about future availability and future performance.

I think the Ravens have played this as well as they can.

QB salaries are getting crazy. Owners know it, fans know it, every other position player knows it. But QBs and their agents don’t care.

The league need to step in and make some changes.

I have no problem with owners agreeing to not give another D. Watson contract because that was so fucking stupid of the Browns. But why would none of them even talk to him? If Lamar refuses to not do a Watson contract then he won't get one and eventually he'll have to concede and do a market appropriate one. That won't happen until other teams start offering him appropriate contracts so that he has to make a choice. Now all they have done is created this media shit storm that makes them look terrible in some people's eyes and are no closer to resolving the issue.

So it is still weird the way they are handling this. Is there an issue with Lamar? And I don't mean his race but the fact he is his own agent. Is he simply not even listening to offers? The public of course won't know, at least at first, so it leaves quite the space for assumptions and conspiracies. But still seems like teams would at least talk to him about money.

Once again, reports based on rumors. "We'll be watching this one closely." Of course you will, because there is not a damn thing going on until the 14th. No team is ging to give a Brown's like contract to a player again. Any player. Can we also mention that Lamar hasn't finished a season the last two seasons? They call that collusion.

NOBody wants to give up 2 1s and pay him a guarranteed contract.
sometimes the athlete prices himself out of the market. Then blames colusion. Kapernik did it now lamar. Just because everyone isnt stupid enough to agree to outrages demands doesnt mean they are consulting with other teams.
He over played his hand. Good news for him. He can blame everything on other people for his own business decisions.

Somebody is going to have to define "collusion" to me and tell me what it takes to prove. I thought it was owners 'getting together', 'having a verbal agreement', 'forming a pact', etc.

Reacting to facts is not collusion, is it? Is there a collusion against running backs? Where are all the huge Gurley-type contracts? Or has the league simply come to terms with the idea, draft them often and don't risk huge money?

QB/L.Jackson facts:

QB money is out of hand.
Watson's guaranteed contract is ridiculous.
Jackson is as fast as a bullet but his QB skills are truly questionable and
he's thrown 400 passes once (401) in his career.
LJ exploded on the scene going 6-1 his rookie year, then led Baltimore to a 25-7 record the next 2 seasons but is not the same guy in the postseason.
--He has a 55% comp %
--He hasn't had a QB rating higher than 79 in a ps game and that was his first game
--He has 96+ QB rating in the RS but only a 68 QB rating in the ps
--and now he's missed 31% of his teams games the last two years, including ps (11 of 35).

I'm not seeing this all-world, unbeatable QB.....particularly if he has to pass... . that everybody else apparently sees.

Lamar Jackson = Over rated

So where's the collusion of arriving at that conclusion? Common sense?

If MaHomey was the QB in this scenario instead of Jackson... I'm betting teams would be offering Watson beating contracts.

Maybe Jackson will get offered that too. But I'm betting that no teams are willing to do it because it is too much of a risk due to Jackson's playing style. He gets injured...

I've seen several great young running NFL QBs, but I've never seen one that wasn't young. Jackson has moved out of the young category.

And already all these NFL players backing him basically vindicating his actions... of course its going to come down to "racism" which is what its sounding like already.

Can’t think of a team that would be into giving up. 1s and guaranteeing $230-250m guaranteed.

Lamar screwed the pooch demanding an all guaranteed contract given his injury history. Just because Haslam is an idiot (and will get what he deserves with a washed Watson) , doesn't mean anybody else has to be an idiot.

Aaaah, the mental conditioning of the Covid Era is apon us......."say whatever you want.....if its popular it doesn't matter if its real or not and there won't be any repercussions". "Don't let facts get in the way of a good story". "Perception rules all".

The thing that continues to piss me off about reporting these days is that you don't have to know anything. We fans don't know....reporters don't know, but everyone says whatever they feel.

Wouldn’t it be ironic is the Texans gave him the money and traded the Browns picks to the Ravens?

I don't blame the owners not wanting to get involved with deals that cripple their ability to build around the quarterback. Jackson is a weapon with his ability to run and pass. Although I wouldn't put his passing in an upper tier. But he's missed the last 5 games over the last two seasons. Might as well say 6 games last year. He left early after 4 attempts in his final start. His playing style puts him at risk. Look at Kyler Murray.
