I remember when I thought the fearsome foursome was a great name for the ram's defensive front. dreaded the Vikings purple people eaters. how about the hog's offensive front-line nickname. anyone remembers any nicknames from then and what about now? I wonder why not. the league could have some good ones. go rams.

This was recently brought up here before. I remember adding to the list. Was it last year?

All of these are defense:

Gritz Blitz - 1977 Falcons
No-Name Defense - 70's Dolphins
Doomsday Defense - 70's Cowboys
Sack Pack - 1975-77 Colts
11 Angry Men - late 60's Raiders
Gang Green - 1987-90 Eagles
Gold Rush - 1976-77 9ers
Silver Rush - 1978(or 79)-80 Lions
Killer Bees - 1982 Dolphins
Bruise Brothers - Chargers 1979-80
Dome Patrol - 1987-89 Saints
Chris's Crew - 50s - 60s Lion DBs

There's was some talk over the original 4 getting the Fearsome Foursome name between Rams, Chargers, Giants and Lions but it stuck with the Rams and they're more famous for it.

https://nflfootballjournal.blogspot.com/2018/12/who-was-nfls-first-fearsome-foursome.html

I think for a few of these teams it was just media verbiage to talk about a front 4 and the Rams ended up making it permanent.

Dome Patrol.

God, I hated that team and especially that defense. Those LB's shut us down every time we played them. Tough as hell to get anything going against them AND they were a division rival at the time. Did I say how mu8ch I hated them?!

I got no love for them either. That 1985 game there was a train wreck.

It's great that the Rams have two of the best nicknames in the history of the game. Fearsome Foursome is impossible to beat. Probably the best nickname ever. And Greatest Show on Turf was damn good too, especially as modern ones go.

Sorry why are The Purple People Eaters not on that list? The Vikings of the late 60’s & early 70’s?

The reason that brings back fond memories is somewhat is my Uncle who was only 5 years older then me screaming when the Vikings were playing the Rams “The Purple People Eaters are NOT hungry today.”

Do the Marks Brothers count? Dolphins WRs Mark Clayton and Mark Duper.

The Smurfs for the Skins WRs during the Fun Bunch era. Guess they loved nicknames back then.

They were mentioned by the OP. I was just adding the ones that weren't when I made my post. Yeah they're up there, we didn't forget.

It's funny that Page and Marshall never liked that name. "Purple People Eaters wtf?" An alternate name used was The Purple Gang. I'd go with Coach Van Brocklin's quote of the "Easter Eggs." :laugh4: (That game where they mistakenly wore all purple back then).
