Saved me some typing! The problem is that he's been up and down. Yes, he put the "And-1" on the Patriots Juggernaut and he did what he did this year with not an overwhelming amount of talent.
But with the Saints, "In 2012, the Saints allowed the most yards for a season of any defense in NFL history en route to finishing 7–9 and missing the playoffs for the first time in four years." Sure there were circumstances, but that's historic bad.
Speaking of historic bad, in the first part of 2021, the Chiefs were giving up yards at a GSOT rate: "The Chiefs are essentially turning opposing offenses into the 2000 St. Louis Rams, who are known as the 'Greatest Show on Turf' and are considered one of the best offensive teams in NFL history."
And his time with the Rams was sort of underwhelming.
So, what is the "real" Spagnuolo?
Above average? Certainly.
Good? Probably.
Great? Best in the League? Yeah, not so sure.
Maybe he's grown under Reid's guidance or maybe this was a fluke year. Or both. Or neither.
Let's see how he does next year.
Like any D-coordinator... talent matters. The problem is that he's been up and down. Yes, he put the "And-1" on the Patriots Juggernaut and he did what he did this year with not an overwhelming amount of talent.

Yeah, I'd like to see how he compares year over year to other DCs. Not gonna have a top 10 D every year no matter who you are. Really impressive what he's been able to do at multiple stops. Wonder what it would have been like if he ever worked for the Rams.Like any D-coordinator... talent matters.
After posting this.. listened to the guys on the Athletic Football Podcast say the same thing, for whatever that’s worth.
Agree. Also agree there have been ups and downs. But I like him and gotta admit when Rams hired him in 2009 I was excited.Like any D-coordinator... talent matters.
I would've thought the 2001 or 2018 Rams would be in there.I heard a stat today that was pretty interesting. The top 3 losing offenses in Super Bowls were the 18-0 Pats, this year’s 9ers, and the 2019 9ers.
Was wondering about that too, what metric did they consider?I would've thought the 2001 or 2018 Rams would be in there.

Manning's Broncos had one of the highest scoring offense ever, Cam's Panthers scored a bunch too
I didn’t think it was looking great in first half.. 5 & 6 man pressures not getting home.Agree. Also agree there have been ups and downs. But I like him and gotta admit when Rams hired him in 2009 I was excited.
But as far as talent ... Snead and McDuffie and his LBers have made his scheme sing this year. And GK is a good player too. Jones was always a great DT. But the CBs especially allowed him to be successful in his blitzes and were the difference this year than in some of the past years.
It's not so much how much he blitzes but the disguises. Anyone can blitz but to get a QB of his rhythm is what he is trying to do and if you can show pressure to one side and bring it from the other without the offense seeing it presnap then you really have the advantage.
So, that is where coaching comes in. Talent matters, without it, coaching wouldn't matter in the little things but when you have CBs like they do, the little things about disguise make even a good oline and RB (6-mna protection) get confused.
It's funny, right through last year's regular season Chiefs fans wanted him fired. This year he had one of best defenses in the NFL.
As you say -- talent matters.
Spags didn't learn how to coach just this year.
Smart players who know the roles of all the other guys, so if one blitzes the replacement player is good at the role of the guy he replaced ... if a nickel blitzed, the safety can play nickel well enough that if blitz doesn't disrupt the throw he can cover. Or if LBer blizes the nickel can play the run well enough if it is a draw .... their back 7 is a lot of ways is interchangeable --- smart and well-coached ... and CBs who are great at man coverage.Interesting defense, for sure.
Demoff went hard on this thread... interesting take on his time as HC.
