A group of 49ers fans have raised nearly $9,000 to put toward purchasing space on a billboard in Seattle that will have the image of San Francisco’s five Super Bowl trophies, and they plan to keep it on display into January.
The group decided “to counter the Seahawks’ fans flying a plane with their banner around Candlestick by placing a billboard showing our 49er pride in Seattle,” according to the group’s website, “Seattle Billboard Fund.”
SI WIRE: Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald expected to play vs. Seahawks
The group’s initial goal was to bring in $7,000 to cover the cost of the billboard, and as of Wednesday afternoon, the fund had $8,945. The Niners fans will bring some of their good wishes to the Seattle area; the extra money will go toward Seattle’s Children’s Hospital, according to an ESPN report citing information from the group’s project manager, Aasheesh Shravah.
The image of the Niners’ five Super Bowl trophies will serve as the backdrop to an image of ”The Catch,” when former Niners wide receiver Dwight Clark had a game-winning reception from Joe Montana in the 1982 NFC Championship game vs. the Dallas Cowboys. The group plans to keep the billboard “for at least one month, all during December and some of January for their playoff games.”
The Seahawks, currently at 12-2, boast the best record in the NFL. Seattle and San Francisco (10-4) own the top two spots, respectively, in the NFC West. They met twice this season, each winning at home.
