Alright, I have a question for my Ram friends. I have noticed a pattern in all of us fans. We’ve read, studied, and watched film, and we fell in love. Then came draft time, and Snead seemed as if he just didn’t care what you thought, and went about the business of completely ruining your draft board. So, in what previous drafts of the Mcsnead Era, did the brain trust pick a player you didn’t agree with, but worked out for the team. I’ll start:
I disagreed with the John Johnson pick..seemed too slow for me...and other than last years injury, he is a smart solid player. Do you have any?

Great question but I really don't have anyone recently, This year I didn't like the Lewis pick but the more I read about him and how no one on Alabama's O-line could block him in practice I'm starting to like the pick more and more.

Well, sadly or not..... I find it somehwat difficult to get too ratcheted over trying to determine what five players out of a thousand might get selected... by any team. The front office pays people to know this, scout this and so on... I personally cannot get too wrapped around this... on the other hand, I've often been amped up this time of year thinking that no one can beat us and we got "our guys...". That is typically never the case... Snisher beat me down from that lofty position... :rolleyes:

I didn’t really like the Akers pick this year, I think it was because his team was crummy, so he wasn’t brought up by all the talking heads. I have seen since the draft that a couple of those talking heads have since said, I should have had him on my short list. Yes, perhaps you should have.

Lewis is first-round talent, no doubt about it. The problem (and why he fell to the third round, and maybe would have kept falling) is that he has a significant injury history.

The talent is absolutely there. The question is whether you want to risk a high pick on a guy that might never actually make it to the field. Because of our situation (an apparent aversion to first round picks), they must have deemed it worthwhile to spend the draft capital on a boom or bust guy in the third.

It matters so little to me that I cant even think of one. I always figure those things work themselves out. Wait- I remember Martz picking a QB and trying to turn him into a DB but the kids heart wasnt in it. I hated that pick.

Yesterday I had a few choice opinions about the new TE Brycen Hopkins. I felt it wasn't a need and most pontificators agree, but when you peel back the onion, it wasnt as egregious as first thought. I threw out a number (9th ranked) but there are numbers that can be thrown back at me...(2nd most yards in NCAA)

All the picks yesterday, to me, are pretty good picks. Even the #248 Kicker.

JJ I didn’t love at the time.
I do now.
Didn’t love the Havenstein pick really.
Jury still out a bit on that one.
Overall I have found his approach interesting and think overall he has been very good.

Going by memory here, but:

2019
Due to his coverage limitations, the Taylor Rapp selection was and is meh to me. But, I didn't really have an alternative as the kids I liked were already selected.

2018
Not a fan of the Micah Kiser or John Kelly selections. Thought Ogbonnia Okoronkwo was the steal of the draft.
Raved about UDFA Tegray Scales.

2017
Liked the John Johnson selection. Didn't understand selecting both Gerald Everett & Cooper Kupp if only one could play slot.

2016
Would have taken Carson Wentz over Jared Goff. Loved the Tyler Higbee selection.

2015
Loved the Gurley and Havenstein selections.. But liked the Sean Mannion selection, too.

2014
Loved the Greg Robinson, Aaron Donald, and EJ Gaines selections. Not a fan of Lemarcus Joyner pick.

2013
Not a fan of the Tavon Austin selection, but thought Barrett Jones was the steal of the draft.

Haha interesting. When I found out that we picked Van Jefferson in the 2nd round. I was like wow we reached and immediately thought “but so did we on John Johnson”.

So I had to go look at pro football reference to jog my memory.

Freakin John Robinson man....in 88 and in 89 we had 2 #1’s and 3 #2’s each year. Thats 10 of the best opportunities in the world. We shoulda won something!

I think McVay and Snead (and the scout/personell system they've developed) are at worst well above average at this. Year in/year out they're going to outmaneuver most of the league.

Snead mentioned something like we had the most ufa's still in the league or something like that--things like that bode well for us.

Add to that- we signed the ufa’s so freakin fast. The Rams were completely prepared this year without a doubt.

In my experience the happier and more excited I am about a pick the worse they do, the picks I'm most confused about end up kicking ass. I was confused and disliked the Aaron Donald selection for example, so clearly I don't know what the fuck I'm looking at when it comes to evaluating.

I had reservations about continuing to start Higbee over Everett. It wasn't because I doubted Higbee's talent, but because of scheme fit and Everett's development was being retarded by lack of snaps. I felt and still feel he has far more potential than he's shown. The problem with both Higbee and Everett is McVay's offense uses TE's as an afterthought and does not fully utilize the position. Last year McVay began to incorporate his TEs into his scheme and the talent of both Higbee and Everett was very clear. In another offense, Everett would be one of the top TEs in the NFL.

Higbee showed he's exactly what you want at the position. He's a very good possession receiver in the short and mid-range. Everett is best in the mid to deep ranges which is what you want if playing a TE out of the slot as KC often does with Kelce. With Cooks gone I hope we see more of Everett and Higbee both on the field at the same time.

Much is being made of the drafting of Hopkins, but there are huge flaws in his game. I see him as simply a replacement for Mundt who's limited athleticism limited on how he was used and he didn't really provide adequate backup for the guys in front of him. This will give him a few years to focus upon his hands (i.e. improving by eliminating his drops) and most of all improving his blocking. He's a huge upgrade to Mundt who IMO was a wasted roster space. With a few years of polishing his somewhat raw technique he has the ability to become a decent TE backup player. I don't see the talent and athleticism for Hopkins to rise much further than a rotational player but he can become a decent role player something every team needs.

This draft feels like The Last Jedi of drafts: controversial because it didn’t meet fan predictions and challenges us.

I’m more of a wait and see kind of guy; liking forward to seeing what the rookies can do. I think we’re good with the continuity of our O-line but I’m still concerned about the center position moving forward.

Once you get past the first 5 picks or so even the experts accuracy goes down the tubes and usually does. Considering the millions of possible permutations it’s amazing anybody gets any right at all. Mocks are fun and all but really expecting to match picks seems really unlikely, so I watch with eager anticipation, hoping the season will happen.

Actually, you should blame John Shaw on that one. In 88 Robinson was set to take both Thurman Thomas and Michael Irvin, Shaw overrode him on both.......
