After parting ways with John Sullivan and Rodger Saffold left in free agency, the Los Angeles Rams were left with gaping holes at center and left guard. They knew who would replace those two veterans, but no one truly knew how Brian Allen and Joseph Noteboom would do as starters.
They hardly played last season as rookies, and Sean McVay opted to rest both players in the preseason. As a result, Sunday was their first real test in the NFL.

This was no small test, either. They had to face the likes of Kawann Short, Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe up front. None of those three players recorded a single sack, however, and they didn’t get close to Jared Goff very often.
Suffice to say, McVay came away impressed with the way both young linemen played.

“I thought they were really productive,” McVay said. “I think, for the most part, when you look at it, it took us a little bit to get going offensively. But, once we settled in, I thought the removal that we got in the run game, I thought the way they protected, for the most part, was really a great job by those guys. It’s a formidable front. You look at the guys all across the board, they’ve got some really good players. For the guys to play the way that they did in both phases, we were very pleased with that. Looking forward to see if we can carry it on against another great front coming up against the Saints.”
As a center, Allen has more responsibility than Noteboom – or any other lineman, for that matter. He has to make calls at the line, identify blitzers, help set the protections and, well, snap the ball.
Those are aspects of the game that first-year starters sometimes struggle with early in their careers. It was an aspect of Sullivan’s game that really benefited the Rams, and Allen is hoping to make that transition seamless.
After one week, he’s on the right track.
“I thought he did a great job. For us to not have any pre-snap issues, on the road, in a hostile environment with us being able to mix up the cadence, we got a couple things where we got them to jump offsides on a big third-and-7, that got us to a third down-and-2. I thought he did a really nice job,” McVay said of Allen. “He and Jared, their rapport continues to grow. To be able to do it in a game that actually counts and being able to evaluate him, especially against caliber of players and structure of defenses that coach (Ron) Rivera was activating, we were really pleased with Brian. I would say we are proud of the performance, excited about it, but not surprised.”

Next up, Allen and the entire offensive line will have to deal with the Saints’ solid front, which is another tough matchup.

Los Angeles Rams versus Carolina Panthers: 5 Rams to watch revisited

We had our eyes peeled...... Let’s look back and see how the 5 Rams to watch performed

The Los Angeles Rams certainly have room for improvement after a 30-27 victory against the Carolina Panthers - specifically on Special teams (more on that later this week).
Let’s take a look back at our Rams to watch.

RB Todd Gurley
Gurley shared the burden of the running game with Malcolm Brown and benefited greatly from the arrangement. He may of ceded some of the early goal line work to Brown, but he still nearly eclipsed 100 yards (97) on 14 carries and caught his only target of the day.
Most importantly, Gurley looked fresh in the fourth quarter when the Rams needed to him most. Count this - and Brown’s effectiveness - as a big win for the Rams.

WR Cooper Kupp
Kupp was held to under 50 yards, but he looked like he was fully recovered from a torn ACL that ended his 2018 campaign. Rams QB Jared Goff looked to be forcing passes to Robert Woods at times and wasn’t accustomed to having his favorite target back in the fold.
With time, that chemistry will return and it will only benefit the Rams offense.

C Brian Allen
The Rams rushed for 150+ yards and had several big runs right up the middle. I’ll admit that I was a bit concerned about Allen - and the interior OL as a whole - heading into this matchup. But I think they put that to bed in Carolina.

DL Sebastian Joseph-Day
With Greg Gaines being a surprise scratch, that was more of an onus on SJD to come up big in the run game. The Panthers averaging 5.5 YPC unfortunately answers most questions that we had.
Yes, they have one of the most electric RBs in the NFL, but the Rams need to improve against the run moving forward.

CB Marcus Peters
I very well could have missed something Sunday, but I don’t recall Peters being mentioned much. The only occasion I remember hearing his name called was after the Cory Littleton interception when he was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.
That flag is part of the danger of having a passionate player on your defense - and if that’s the only time we’re hearing his name called, it’s very good for the Rams defense.

On the Marcus Peters unsportsmanlike penalty call...

Can somebody explain to me what he actually did to earn that. They glossed right over it on my TV feed here in Orlando. I have no idea what he did at all to deserve that call.

Not so sure that means SJD had a bad day though?

I do remember Donald being pushed back while playing 1T on a successful rush up the middle. I also remember seeing some successful runs up the middle with the Rams playing 3T 5T.

But I don't remember them running at SJD when he was out there, though I wasn't necessarily looking that closely at the DL every play.

Why were you surprised? Don't trust Kromer? Good teams do that every year. Pats started a guy at LT who missed his entire rookie season due to injury. I think our two young players performing well was the expectation and they of course lived up to it.

Aaron Kromer knows what's up.

I was more surprised about Allen than Noteboom. I honestly expected Blythe to continue to get pushed around but the middle of our line, LG - OC - RG held up nicely in pass pro & got some lanes blown open in the 2nd half.
Noteboom will take Whit's place at LT whenever he's ready to hang up the cleats. Joe was a great find by our scouts - I was like, who's that?? when they drafted him, but he keeps growing on me every time I see him. Well worth the draft capital spent.

Rams DL got manhandled. Donald similar to last year's first game wasn't his usual doubleteam-beating self. Brock looked like the Brock of 2018 vice 2017. SJD was an afterthought on the rush and let himself get washed out time to time. Gaines probably would have as well tbh.

Panthers OL is playing extremely well. They were ready for a physical game and basically punched our DL in the mouth. And that's a good thing btw, with the Saints coming. Means the DL is gonna be locked in and ready to rebound.

And I think Gaines will be active on Sunday. IMO he gives us penetration and a better ability to anchor in (that is his specialty).

I do think Blythe was the worst of the 3 interior OL tbh. His prob is that when he loses on a run play he gets blown up and we have 300lbs in our backfield. That's really what the line needs to start limiting is those plays where they get that instant penetration.

IMO we will start seeing Edwards at that RG position as soon as the team feels like he has a good handle. Because Blythe is gone come the offseason, and Edwards on the inside will probably give you fewer plays where it's a jailbreak.

I was surprised and I'll bet Kromer is surprised to learn he is infallible.

Only those who have a lack of faith in Kromer and McVay would be surprised.

I am pulling for the 6-6-320 pound Chandler Brewer emerge @ right OG myself. I prefer David Edwards remains the swing OT & LG reserve. Ensure Edwards is ready to start @ LG in 2020.

Brewer has true NFL RG size. Most likely needs to improve on his movement skills that Kromer demands in his scheme.

I think David Edwards takes Whit's place. Edwards fits the prototypical left tackle profile better than Noteboon.

We also had a huge holding penalty, near the goal line, which nobody apparently saw, nor replayed, nor mentioned twice. Cost us a TD.
