So a 2 months ago I fell off my staging about 7-8'..landed on my ass. Only thing hurt was my ego at the time. After a few days I was right as rain. But last month I started getting some shooting pains from my right butt cheek all the way down to my right foot. Now I dont trust doctors (long story, no need to go into it) so it was basically self-diagnosed as sciatica.

I started out just taking some Motrin to deal with the pain whenever it flared up. I have adopted a new stretching routine every morning that seems to help a lot, and have gone for some massage therapy ( no happy endings ya pervs) but I still am in pain on a regular basis. Wife wants me to go to an acupuncturist to see if that helps but I am hesitant on that.

The good thing about it is it flares up when I sit down for too long, so I have been extremely active, from running at least a few miles a day, taking the pups on hikes, and basically getting stuff done around the house. I just hope it goes away by football season so I can sit my ass on the couch for 10 hours on Sundays Lol

If the stretching helps, try a Tai Massage. Totally different than a standard Swedish, sport or even deep tissue. Its heavily based on stretching.
Also, talk to your therapist. They will spend an entire treatment on a troubled area if you wish. The therapists makes a world of difference as well. Many just aren't that good

My fiancee has it, it really hurts her if she stands or sits for too long. Theres a few different stretches that can help though. Also a tennis ball can help sometimes as well if you lay on it right.

I bought one of those Teeter things, and it may have helped a bit. For too much compression of the spine, hanging upside down has a certain degree of common sense to it.

By all means, get it used or a cheap version— no need for bells and whistles.

Don’t need to go all the way upside down, and stretching out the spine (traction) feels good too.

I actually have a gift card to a place that does Thai massage, but for some weird reason they arent open on Saturdays, which is basically my only available day. Plus it's an hour drive away which wont do me any good

Many therapists are trained in it, even at a standard Day Spa. I'm not sure how good they will be at it, but it may not hurt to ask

No sophomore comments needed but go ahead if you must. Cupping will make you look like you got attacked by a giant octopus but it really worked for me. It’s the same therapy Michael Phelps used during the Olympics.

Sadly I don’t think your running is helping. If it is what you think, added compression is not good for the problem.

Anyway, my wife did acupuncture for lower back issues and it did wonders. I was very skeptical before going the acupuncture route but am now a believer.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm in the middle of my third bout with this. Mine is hurting from my left butt cheek down the back of my hamstring. I about 5 weeks into this one.

Yeah, sitting is a bitch, especially criss cross. Seems to be at its worst in the morning right when I wake up.

Stretching does really help, and some "light" exercise as well (standing squats and lunges).

For me, I haven't found anything else that helps, except time. Waiting it out and eventually the pain stops.

I have heard positive feedback, from people that have tried Acupuncture. I have never tried it myself though.
My ex is a Massage therapist. A very good one at that. Very dedicated to her craft.

Backs are just, well, weird.

My wife had a bout of sciatic nerve pain, and she was super careful for a month. Then one day she said “screw it,” and went out and did some shoveling in the back yard. Then she felt better after that.

I’m not recommending this as a treatment, by the way! She did the opposite of what she was supposed to do, and it helped. Go figure.

I do recommend those Teeter things, though... good for relieving compression of the spine, and certainly won’t do any harm.

Sciatic pain related to trauma is usually involving either a slipped or bulging disc somewhere in the back putting pressure on a nerve.

Acupuncture or even chiropractic work will only provide temporary relief. Any time the site gets inflamed you'll have nerve symptoms. Call around to some physical therapy clinics in your area and see if any of them do consults at no cost--many of them do. They'll be able to give you a solid recommendation on what to do moving forward and doctors they trust in the area.

Sorry Rhody. We are in the same industry and I know how hard you work. Good advice from some of the guys. I’ll be praying for healing and pain relief, my brother.

I used this process as well with surprisingly positive results. Getting adjusted and strengthening also help. My acupuncturist used the fire needles and after appx 10 to 15 sessions my sciatica was under control for a long time. It is back and I am in need of treatment but usually I wait for a break in work and attack it hard and consistent. GL

So I had a problem with this about a year and a half ago where I had a bulging disc from doing dead lifts. I ignored it bc the pain was manageable and I’m stubborn like that, until one day I fell and actually blew the disc up. A chunk of it wedged in my sciatic never canal and was the most awful thing imaginable. The only thing that made me feel a little better was pizza and good old fashioned whiskey. I couldn’t walk, sleep, sit or do anything without searing left leg pain from my ass cheek, down my hamstring , into my calf, and all the way into my toes for months. I tried everything I could think of to fix it; physical therapy, inversion table, stretching, chiropractor, nothing helped. Finally after a few months of misery and about 45 lbs later I got surgery and had it removed. All I can say is that I wish that on absolutely nobody, don’t Lolligag when it comes to stuff with your spine, at least go get an mri and see what you’re actually dealing with so you don’t make anything worse and end up like I was.
