Clemens’ Completions
St. Louis Rams quarterback Kellen Clemens possesses a paltry 51.5 career completion percentage. Although the St. Louis coaching staff cannot expect him to suddenly display the pinpoint precision of a Kurt Warner, they have to hope that he can improve upon his 48-percent success rate of a week ago vs. the superb secondary of the Seattle Seahawks.
Unfortunately for Clemens, he will again face one of the league’s better air defenses this week against the Tennessee Titans. Through seven games, Tennessee ranks No. 7 in passing yards allowed per contest
That said, the Titans currently stand at just 22nd-best in completion percentage allowed (63.5), so there are often some openings for quarterbacks to find when throwing the ball.
So, what’s the answer for Clemens and the Rams’ offense against the Titans’ pass defense?
For the most part, Clemens needs to be more willing to accept the easier checkdown throws and take what the defense gives him than he did last week. Against the Seattle Seahawks, Clemens was too aggressive in forcing the ball downfield, shunning several easy short and intermediate conversion opportunities in exchange for deeper throws that often fell incomplete.
This week, Clemens needs to find a way to complete a higher percentage of his passes if the offense is to have a shot at success.
