EARTH CITY, Mo. -- The St. Louis Rams will join the rest of their NFL brethren in signing their rookie class in the near future.
With two first-round picks and 11 first-year players overall to sign, the team's pool for its rookie class is expected to be the largest in the league. According to the good people at Overthecap.com, the Rams' rookie pool will check in at $10,359,790 for Year 1 payouts with a cap commitment of $5,739,790 required.
The important figure there, of course, is the cap number since that's what the Rams have to abide by for 2014 to make their total cap work. When all is said and done, Overthecap estimates the contracts for the rookie class to come out to more than $55 million with nearly $23 million allocated for signing bonuses.
We'll delve into the numbers more when the Rams begin signing their rookie class. For now, let's focus on what the team's current cap situation is and whether it can fit the rookie class in under its current cap scenario.
According to the most recent update from ESPN Stats & Information, the Rams have $6,380,971 in cap space. Assuming Overthecap's number for the 2014 cap allocation is correct, the Rams can sign the 11 drafted rookies and have $641,181 leftover. Of course, for now, the cap only counts the top 51 contracts and that will change when the season arrives and the count is the top 53 contracts on the roster.
But there still remains a kicker here involving former Rams cornerback Cortland Finnegan. The above numbers don't reflect the $3 million cap credit the Rams stand to receive after Finnegan signed with the Miami Dolphins. That credit has not yet been issued to the Rams. When it does, they should be able to sign their rookie class and have enough room to sign a practice squad and make new additions work should injuries strike.
