As expected, the Rams have exercised a fifth-year option on defensive end Robert Quinn's contract which will keep the Pro Bowl defensive end under contract with the team through 2015.
Quinn will earn just under $7 million with the option exercised — $6.969 million to be exact. There is nothing for Quinn to sign in terms of the option; it was exercised at the club's discretion. The $6.9 million is guaranteed for injury until the first day of the league year in 2015 (which usually commences in March). At that time, the fifth year becomes fully guaranteed.
Given Quinn's breakout year in 2013, when he led the NFC in sacks with 19 and set a Rams single-season franchise record, playing for that amount of money in 2015 is a bargain.
The Rams met briefly with Quinn's representative at the NFL Scouting Combine two months ago to talk about an extension, but any such talks can probably now be put on hold for a year.
Quinn will make $1.66 million and count $3 million against the salary cap this season, in the fourth year of his original contract after getting drafted 14th overall in 2011.
