Rams 53-man roster projection: 8 “reasonable surprises” that could happen

Veterans free agents and undrafted surprises that could strengthen LA’s roster in September
There are many different kinds of LA Rams 53-man roster projections that I could do, as we sit about two months shy of those final cuts, but make no mistake that all of them would be wrong. A writer could sit down and struggle for hours, or days, thinking of all the “right” moves but ultimately, Sean McVay will throw some Stafford side-winders at us and there will be names nobody could have ever expected.
It could be an undrafted free agent rookie.
It could be a veteran free agent who is unsigned as of today.
It could be a player who seems buried behind a sure thing right now, only to see that “sure thing” move onto a new destination.
These would all fall into the category of “reasonable surprises” for me, because even if you can’t predict what will happen, we should be able to foresee that some unexpected things will happen.
The following is not some “final roster projection” meant to be 100-percent accurate. It is meant to be inaccurate, so that we can start to think about all of the possibilities that exist between now and the real final 53-man roster. A roster that nobody will be able to predict, but that everybody will be able to have some opinions on. Likely some strong opinions.
I decided to do a 53-man roster projection that had some surprises. I came away with eight surprises. I don’t expect all of these things to happen, but now I think we’re prepared for them to and discuss why LA should or should not go in these directions.

Offense

QB - Matthew Stafford, Bryce Perkins(1)
RB - Cam Akers, Devonta Smith(2), Xavier Jones, Jake Funk
WR - Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, DeSean Jackson, Tutu Atwell, Van Jefferson
TE - Tyler Higbee, Brycen Hopkins, Johnny Mundt, Jacob Harris
OL - Andrew Whitworth, Rob Havenstein, David Edwards, Bobby Evans, Austin Corbett, Tremayne Anchrum, Joseph Noteboom, Chandler Brewer, Alaric Jackson(3), Austin Reiter(4)
Total: 25

1 - The motivation to try out a different backup other than John Wolford: a) Why not? and b) The Rams got a shot to see Wolford last season and while he was put in a difficult late-season situation, that opportunity still helped spark a trade for Matthew Stafford. And not a starting opportunity for Wolford.

2 - There’s nothing personal here, it’s just trying out different looks and in this case, what if the Rams have decided that after two seasons of Darrell Henderson, it’s time to move on? Henderson has missed some offseason work with an undisclosed injury. He had a chance to be Todd Gurley’s replacement and that didn’t come to pass. Perhaps a trade for a day three pick will allow Henderson a chance to start elsewhere. I chose the 29-year-old Freeman off the free agent market because a) He’s available and b) He knows Raheem Morris. I didn’t choose Le’Veon Bell because I wanted to avoid Le’Veon Bell comments.

3 - I’m not “high” on Alaric Jackson, I’m practically picking an UDFA at random but at a position of need. Don’t read into it more than that.

4 - The Rams finally decide that if nobody else is going to sign Reiter, they’ll take the opportunity to have an experienced backup waiting behind Corbett. And if a guard gets injured, Corbett can slide inside too. LA has some cap space left and I would not expect either of these offensive signings to cut into it deeply.

CB - Jalen Ramsey, Darious Williams, Terrell Burgess, Robert Rochell, David Long
S - Jordan Fuller, Taylor Rapp, Nick Scott, Malik Hooker(5)
OLB - Terrell Lewis, Leonard Floyd, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Chris Garrett
ILB - Micah Kiser, Travin Howard, Ernest Jones, Kenny Young, Christian Rozeboom(6)
DL - Aaron Donald, Sebastian Joseph-Day, A’Shawn Robinson, Bobby Brown, Earnest Brown, Greg Gaines, George Silvanic(7)
ST - Matt Gay, Corey Bojorquez(8), Steve Wirtel
Total - 28

CB - Last season, the Rams kept only four cornerbacks, but six safeties. However, the year before, they kept six cornerbacks and fewer safeties, so there’s no real method to the math in the secondary other than “best players get to stay”. Early word is that Burgess is in the lead to replace Troy Hill’s snaps at cornerback. If Burgess wins this job, that’s bad news for Long as he enters his third year after being a third round pick in 2019. If Burgess does win that job, and Rochell performs well in August, it could spell Long’s final days with the Rams. However, I think we’ve also heard positive things about Long from Sean McVay this year and there’s no need to rush to judgment.

5 - All that being said, I did some of you a favor by imagining the team signing Hooker, possibly the most intriguing free safety left on the market. Only 25, the former first round pick is still in recovery from a torn Achilles. However, the injury happened early in 2020 camp and he could be ready to go by Week 1. Hooker recently met with the Steelers and said he likely won’t sign with any team until camp, and that he wants to go a place that will fit his style so that he can have a positive one-year prove-it campaign. I think a healthy Hooker could help replace the valuable snaps that left with John Johnson.

6 - What if Rozeboom — or any unknown linebacker — comes in and has a dominant camp? Nothing is impossible with this unit and it would be a reasonable surprise to see someone like Rozeboom, Jones, Justin Lawler, or Justin Hollins as a starter. A corresponding surprise was cutting Hollins which, again, is not personal. I have no reason to believe Hollins is behind any of these other players, it’s just a 53-man roster projection with some different looks.

7 - Pick a random UDFA and add him to the roster. That’s the recipe! I like Silvanic’s story.

8 - Yeah, pretty understandable here and nobody is disputing that it is odd how the team signed Bojorquez. McVay says this is really not a possibility, and I have no reason to doubt him, but Bojorquez has to fall into the “reasonable surprises” category. Otherwise, what is he doing here? Hekker is the highest-paid punter in the NFL next season.

There was a disclaimer that ‘The following is not some “final roster projection” meant to be 100-percent accurate. It is meant to be inaccurate, so that we can start to think about all of the possibilities that exist between now and the real final 53-man roster’. I took this to mean it was to start a conversation vs seriously believe the result. For example Hekker may be cut to save cap space (probably not until next year). I wouldn’t mind seeing Hooker and Reiter added but no way will the Rams trade Henderson.

He lost me at DeVonta Smith (WR Eagles) corrected himself later, but DeVonta Freeman is as injury prone as Henderson with far more tread on the tires.

Me too, literally makes no sense. Plus, they'd have to keep Aaron Donald from carrying him around like his personal rag doll.

The idea of dropping Hekker is like dumping Ray Guy IMO. I’ve been wrong about other things so ….

Wonder, where he is hearing Terrel Burgess, is getting serious looks @ the outside corner? I certainly can see Burgess winning the Main Nickle but this is the first time I saw Burgess = Outside Corner being mentioned. It's no secret in here that I have been impressed with Burgess.

I do not see the Rams cutting both Rams backup centers (Shelton/Allen) then buying paying high Austin Reiter. Rams will not cut LB Troy Reeder. QB Wolford is a certain keep. His DL is not right either.

Guys like Kenneth Arthur of SBNation and especially Bret Stuter of RamblinFan may be nice guys; and they may even know their stuff. However, they are forced to generate too much content. Stuter sometimes puts out three articles in one day!

Arthur (above article) is projecting a lot of goofy stuff, with Camp just weeks away. It's Rams material but it's mostly useless material.

I would be blown away if they dumped Wolfy. He said Wolfy didn't show anything? Really? He showed that he is a very good back up QB...

Wolford has the heart of a lion and can take over the wheel & steer us to victory when called upon (no, this isn't his father on ROD pumping him up!).
He's going to be here a long time.

Henderson reminds me of those small RB that played for the Chargers. He has good hands, but not a PR. Such as a poor teams Sproles.
To say he is going to get cut or not be a big part of the offense shows poor evaluation. Mcvay was looking for a player like Hendo since he first became The Rams HC.

I won't lie, he lost me with the "nothing personal, but I don't really know anything about the bottom of the roster so I put a random guy here" comments. Why write this post without doing the research first.

I know it's just an amateur fan blog, but I still found that a bit annoying lol

Well here is an example of
A Bad off season article.I really could not comment on it.Just glad wecc be all basically saw it the same way.
Personally I thought Hekker would be a Ram back then.Bojo was a surprise. It took that kind of an effort from a punter to push him to The Top expect Johnny to have a All Pro type of season again. This 2021 draft class was built of special teams in mind.
Bryce Hopkins beat out Blanton because of it.I talked chit out loud to him Where everyone could here he was going to get cut.Talk about a guy making the most out of the preseason on special teams.
Perkins earned his spot.Mcvay addressed it.Watching trading camp there was no way he would be on the roster.Practice squad was even a question.Hodges had a good solid camp & got better as it went on.Wolford being hurt opened up the door for him.Wolford never took a preseason snap, nor did Stafford.
I watched a few preseason games.Around The NFL The Vest QB’s we’re taking snaps.Just an example of the way Sean Mcvay runs his own show.

I’ll add my guy Troy Reeder. At SoFI my GF predicted him as the guy.Actually she knew talent for some that knows nothing about football & was jacked to be there.Took her to Chargers camp. She liked #25’s hair, but speed. There #1 is going to be good.SoFI has a whole different feel.

Leonard Floyd signing with The Rams is going very unnoticed. His worth is HUGE.$64 mill. The Rams can’t get it wrong. My GF could see this guy is a Star!! Of course AD99,SJD69,Whit,, didn’t suit up & the offense was on the other side of the field.Jalen #5? Did he take Perkins Jersey?
Kiser at that time was taking a leadership role.Bobby Jones is not easy on the eye at 23 years old.Needs to keep bulking up.
J.Williams caught my eye out of the DT’s with Bobby Brown.E.Brown is a young man who looks like a sponge & has such strong hands & a big body.He should be a good practice squad guy.His speed off the edge is the question, but he has quickness.Dude has a good future in The NFL.

Rams 53-Man Roster Projection: Built for Repeat?

BY ZACH DIMMITT JULY 10, 2022

The Rams have no shortage of star power entering a title-defending season that brings Super Bowl-or-bust expectations once again. It's going to be hard to find a team loaded with more stars than the Los Angeles Rams next season, as the defending champs are stacked with big names across the board. As if the attention of competing for back-to-back Super Bowls wasn't enough, general manager Les Snead and coach Sean McVay arguably stole the show this offseason after managing to secure superstar Aaron Donald for the foreseeable future, inking Super Bowl MVP Cooper Kupp to an extension, signing veteran Pro-Bowl receiver Allen Robinson II, and poaching ageless wonder and six-time All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner from an NFC West rival in the Seattle Seahawks.

With all these names, it's easy to gloss over the superstar prowess of quarterback Matthew Stafford and cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who are returning as the emotional leaders on offense and defense, respectively. An underrated draft haul also puts LA in position to have some budding talent in areas, like the defensive secondary, that lacked depth last season. So, what could the opening-night roster look like after the conclusion of training camp? A look at RamsDigest.com's projection of the 53-man roster:

QUARTERBACK (3): Matthew Stafford, John Wolford, Bryce Perkins

In the event of a Stafford injury, Wolford would be able to fill in decently due to his familiarity with McVay and the system, but the drop-off would be significant. Should that happen, Perkins could also have a chance to compete for starting reps.

RUNNING BACK (4): Cam Akers, Darrell Henderson Jr., Kyren Williams (R), Jake Funk

It'll still be a slight committee approach at running back for McVay, with Akers serving as the 1A coming off a season that saw him return from injury and Henderson Jr. as 1B after his productive campaign last year. Williams is still recovering from foot surgery as he enters his rookie year, but should see ample playing time at some point based on the injury nature of the running back position.

WIDE RECEIVER (6): Cooper Kupp, Allen Robinson II, Van Jefferson, Tutu Atwell, Ben Skowronek, Brandon Powell

Adding Robinson to the fold makes this one of the league's best receiving rooms, even without the potential re-signing of Odell Beckham Jr., who likely wouldn't be able to return till mid-season anyway. The speedy special-teamer Atwell should see an increased role in the offense after failing to record a catch in 2021, while Skowronek looks to provide the same important depth that he brought at key times last season.

TIGHT END (3): Tyler Higbee, Kendall Blanton, Brycen Hopkins

No real change here. All three tight ends proved valuable last season, but Higbee will reclaim his role as TE1 this fall after being absent for the Super Bowl. Even in the case of another injury, McVay should sleep well at night knowing he's got a solid group of tight ends.

OFFENSIVE LINE (9): Joe Noteboom, Brian Allen, David Edwards, Logan Bruss (R), Rob Havenstein, A.J. Arcuri (R), Bobby Evans:laugh4::zany1:, A.J. Jackson, Tremayne Anchrum Jr.

Even with the loss of Andrew Whitworth and Austin Corbett, the Rams still have talent at o-line, though there's still much to prove. The veteran experience of Havenstein will give Stafford some security, while Noteboom is set to be the star of the o-line as he replaces Whitworth's spot at left tackle. The Rams' first draft pick in April was used on the rookie Bruss, who is set to be a starter in year one with the versatility to move around if needed.

DEFENSIVE LINE (6): Greg Gaines, A'Shawn Robinson, Aaron Donald, Marquise Copeland, Bobby Brown III, Michael Hoecht

The Rams have a solid returning core for the exception of Sebastian Joseph-Day. Gaines and Robinson will look to wreck havoc while Donald commands double teams (which he is certainly capable of beating anyways). The talented d-line will be the forefront leader of the Rams' attempt at repeating 50 sacks from a season ago, which was third-most in the league. Much of this production will come from the edge as well.

OUTSIDE LINEBACKER (4): Leonard Floyd, Justin Hollins, Daniel Hardy (R), Terrell Lewis

Floyd is likely to contend with Donald for the team-lead in sacks. Hollins and Lewis won't fill the talent void left by Von Miller, but the five sacks combined between the two is a healthy number that can be built upon. The Rams still won't know what they have in the rookie Hardy. His addition to the final roster would be an interesting one, though it remains to seen what LA chooses to do here.

INSIDE LINEBACKER (4): Bobby Wagner, Ernest Jones, Travin Howard, Christian Rozeboom Signing Wagner was arguably one of the best additions in the league this offseason. His vocal and example-setting guidance will be huge for the second-year linebacker and Howard, who was on the verge of breaking into a bigger role last season.

CORNERBACK (6): Jalen Ramsey, Troy Hill, Derion Kendrick (R), Decobie Durant (R), David Long Jr., Robert Rochell

The Rams used the draft to provide a substantial boost to the secondary, which was arguably the weakest unit last season. Using draft stock on rookies Durant and Kendrick to learn under Ramsey and the returning presence of Hill. LA's secondary was on the verge of being in the bottom third of the league statistically last season, allowing the the 11th-most passing yards (241.7) per game.

SAFETY (5): Jordan Fuller, Nick Scott, Taylor Rapp, Quentin Lake (R), Terrell Burgess

The backline of the secondary is promising with Fuller, LA's 2021 leading-tackler (113) and Scott, who came up with some timely interceptions last season. Rapp also tied Ramsey for the team-lead with four picks. Lake, the third rookie in the secondary, is another promising piece that has tons of experience in front of him to learn from.

SPECIALISTS (3): Kicker: Matt Gay, Punter: Riley Dixon, Long Snapper: Matthew Orz Parting with longtime punter Johnny Hekker definitely stings from a trick-play excitement standpoint, but the Rams now have a few options to choose from at that position. Rookie kicker/punter Cameron Dicker could challenge Dixon for the starting spot with a potential solid showing in training camp, but the latter gets the current edge due to general NFL experience. Gay missed just four fields all of last season, including the playoffs, and was reliable when the Rams needed him most. It doesn't take much for kickers to lose their starting job, but Gay's is secure as of now.

Would you let me critique the above article?

#1- RB- If McVay is depending just on these 4 horses in his RB stable....he better have 2 or 3 proven healthy RB's signed on his PS. The newest drafted rookie addition is still recovering from a broken foot. He was broken fast. Another has torn both his ACL's back-to-back seasons & his rookie season was spent predominantly unavailable due to injury. Trusting Henderson to be physically functional for back-to-back games is one very bad big risk.

The next-in-line signed projected PS comprised of MASH unit..... Raymond Calais& Xavier Jones have been injured since they arrived here in 2020. A.J. Rose's rookie season in 2021 was filled with various injuries.

#2-TE- appears I am the only fan concerned by this trio of TE's & its ability to block?

#3-OL-Evans will NOT earn an MR53 position over center Coleman Shelton.

#4-DL-Having only 1 DL'er on your team that has any real ability to rush the passer is one serious gamble.

#5-ER's-I do not see this team going with a 7th rd rookie & a physical total wreck as the only two backup ER's. Don't think Chris Garrett is beaten out by Hardy/Lewis.

#6-Safeties- Back-up SS Talor Rapp does not fit in this secondary plus there is nearly $3 mil. salary cost in keeping him over younger safeties with a future. Rams must replace UFA 2 safeties next season.

Are we Negative today Bonifay’d? I remember last year you went off the deep end a little bit. Was glad you hung in there & were able to ENJOY The Rams SuperBowl Championship!!

What I know about Sean Mcvay & The Rams is this is the most important time to develop players coming up.

When the time comes The Rams & McSnead will step in or step up to solve issues the team may have. They also believe in WE & not ME.

Bonifay’d I understand where you are coming from, but Intrust in the system.

RB - I would have wanted a bigger RB in the mix.Sony was a nice fit.I could see a Hopkins or Blanton playing a little FB/Blocking.

TE - Higbee is a work horse & the backups are more battle tested this season. Johnny Mundt was The Rams best run blocking TE.

The offensive line is a work in progress. It will come together with Carberry.

I like The Rams depth on defense. Hard to say exactly what will happen as of now though. I think the pass rush is going to actually be better in 2022. Probably have The most sacks ever by a Rams teams in history?
