Projecting Rams’ starting offensive line after initial free agency moves

The Rams’ offensive line was bound to undergo some changes this offseason. Andrew Whitworth is on the verge of retirement, Brian Allen and Austin Corbett were free agents and Joseph Noteboom has been waiting in the wings to replace Whitworth at left tackle.

One day into the legal tampering period of free agency, the Rams’ O-line is already taking shape. They re-signed Noteboom, Allen and Coleman Shelton, keeping them in the mix for 2022. Corbett won’t be back in Los Angeles, however, after he landed a three-year, $29.25 million deal with the Panthers.

We still don’t officially know Whitworth’s plan for 2022, but he’s been hinting at retirement for some time now. So assuming he does retire from the NFL, the Rams’ starting offensive line isn’t terribly difficult to project at this point.

It will probably look something like this
LT: Joseph Noteboom
LG: David Edwards
C: Brian Allen
RG: Coleman Shelton
RT: Rob Havenstein

There’s a chance that Shelton could play left guard and Edwards could move to the right side, but for now, we’ll project Edwards to stay at left guard and Shelton to replace Corbett at right guard.

Shelton started at left guard against the Vikings in Week 16 after Whitworth and Havenstein tested positive for COVID-19, forcing Edwards to play left tackle with Noteboom at right tackle. So he has experience at left guard, and in college, Shelton also played right guard.

Had Allen not been re-signed, it would’ve been easy to pencil in Shelton as the starting center, too. He has position flexibility across all three interior spots, giving the Rams plenty of options in the event of injury.

The Rams committed to Shelton for longer than they needed to, as well, which is a good sign for how highly they think of him. He was a restricted free agent, so he could’ve been tendered for one year for as low as $2.4 million. We still don’t know how much Shelton’s two-year deal is worth, but the Rams clearly wanted to keep him beyond just 2022.

LA prioritizes stability and homegrown talent along the offensive line

While the Los Angeles Rams continue to work on a contract extension for quarterback Matthew Stafford, the team made sure to keep the majority of his protection in place. LA re-signed left tackle Joseph Noteboom and center Brian Allen to three-year deals, while also retaining the services of center/guard Coleman Shelton with a two-year pact.

Unfortunately, the Rams couldn’t keep everyone up front, as right guard Austin Corbett is expected to sign a three-year $29.25 million contract with the Carolina Panthers. Though there has been no official word on Andrew Whitworth’s status, he is expected to retire, ending his illustrious career with a much-deserved Super Bowl ring. Those presumed departures made Monday’s re-signings that much more critical to the future success of the o-line, and the offense as a whole.

Noteboom will become the Rams new starting left tackle, a role he has been groomed for since being selected in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft. He has performed exceptionally well whenever he has been called to step into the starting lineup. As long as he can stay healthy, the 27-year old Noteboom should only get better with more experience.

The void at right guard is likely to be filled by Shelton. At the very least, it may be his job to lose. The former 2018 undrafted free agent played well (all thing considered) in his two starts during the 2021 season, but will have to perform even better if he is going to earn a permanent position in the starting lineup.
While the re-signings may not equal the splash of a big trade for another marquee name, they were vital in providing stability up front. An offensive line consisting of Noteboom, David Edwards at left guard, Allen, Shelton possibly starting at right guard, and Rob Havenstein at right tackle is a good offensive line to work with in an attempt to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

LA Rams lay solid foundation for team to open NFL free agency

by Ronnie Eastham

The LA Rams have a lot of work to do to prepare another NFL Championship run, or is it defense? In any case, the first step is to stick to the Rams Free Agency plan with the same precision as a general coordinating an attack.

NFL Free Agency technically does not officially open until 1:00 pm PDT on March 16, 2022, but NFL teams are authorized to begin negotiating with players on March 14th, as evident by all the NFL news coming out. There were some questionable contracts being handed out today, including that of the Jacksonville Jaguars agreeing to sign former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Christian Kirk to a four-year, $72 million deal.

In comparative terms, the LA Rams were relatively quiet. That is not to say that the team sat this one out. There were some deals in the offing, as well as a significant loss on both the offensive and defensive lines.
It starts at the line of scrimmage
The LA Rams were not completely inactive, as the front office did manage to sign a few of their own. Three so far, to be exact, and all offensive linemen. The first report was that of offensive tackle Joseph Noteboom, whose compensation was definitely in the range of starting left tackle, rather than handy-dandy swiss-army knife versatile backup. The deal has been reported as a three-year $40 million contract, which incentives to earn as much as $47.5 million.

Next up, the LA Rams extended starting offensive center, Brian Allen, with a three-year $24 million contract. While Allen did suffer injury in 2021, this contract ensures that the Rams offensive line will remain intact for 2022. And Allen is coming off his best NFL season, while still having plenty of upside potential to develop even further.

Finally, the team turned to backup center Coleman Shelton. Even though the team may have ensured his return with a one-year Qualifying Tender Offer, the team elected to commit to a two-year deal with Shelton. The result implies that the team plans to install Noteboom at left tackle, keep Allen at the center position, and slide Shelton to right guard where he will take over for outbound free agent Austin Corbett.
Paths parting ways with others
The LA Rams are making every effort to keep their offensive line intact, or at least to ensure that they have a veteran group of starters who can get right to it from the get-go in 2022. With any successful season, some players are bound to leave for greener pastures, meaning green in their bank accounts.

Case in point, starting right guard Austin Corbett, which PFF has graded his 2021 performance at 68.8. He is signing a new deal with the Carolina Panthers for three years and $29.5 million. For those of you who follow those sorts of things, that is a contract that will likely result in an awarded compensatory pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

I think Coleman Shelton is the floor for this position for the Rams next season. He's got real physical limitations.. but is obviously a scrapper and knows his assignments.
I have to think they hope Evans wakes up... or maybe a draft pick can win the position. Shelton's got short arms.. isn't particularly athletic or strong. I just think that they'd want someone with appreciably more upside at that spot.

Rams line should be fine next season. Maybe not a top 5 line but good enough with a smart QB behind center. They really need to bring back OBJ. He might not be ready for the start of the season but having him down the stretch would be huge. Imagine him, Kupp and Woods running wild through the secondary and a healthy Akers running the ball. Visions of the GSOT come to mind. No reason we couldn't run it back with that.

Coleman Shelton re-signs with the Los Angeles Rams

ByCHRIS FETTERS

View: https://twitter.com/RamsNFL/status/1503486611123683331?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1503486611123683331%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2F247sports.com%2Fcollege%2Fwashington%2FArticle%2FWashington-Huskies-UW-Football-Former-Husky-Coleman-Shelton-re-signs-with-the-Los-Angeles-Rams-Taylor-Rapp-Greg-Gaines--184455905%2F

The Rams have re-signed offensive lineman Coleman Shelton to a two-year deal.

Since joining the Rams prior to the start of the 2019 regular season, Shelton has appeared in 43 regular-season games, including one start at center last season against the Cardinals in Week 14 while Brian Allen recovered from a knee injury, and another start at left guard against the Vikings in Week 16 – plus six playoff games. Allen sustained that injury on the Rams' first offensive snap of their Week 13 game against the Jaguars, which forced Shelton into action on short notice, but Shelton transitioned seamlessly and received praise the following week for his performance. Shelton has also seen action on special teams.

The 26-year-old Shelton first entered the league signing with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2018. After being cut by the 49ers at the end of training camp, he was signed to the Cardinals' practice squad in mid-October that year. After the Cardinals cut him at the end of training camp in 2019, he was signed by the Rams to their active roster.

Good post.

I too think it will be an open competition. Good signing to let Sheldon compete. At worst he is a solid backup for three spots on interior line.

Exactly!

I could see the following signed Ram OL'ers all fighting it out for that Austin Corbett post @ RG.

Jeremiah Kolone 28 yrs old been a Ram since 2018 @ 6-2/316 has size
Chandler Brewer 25-3 who signed with the Rams in 2019 @ 6-6/320
Bobby Evans 25/4 was penciled as the 6th Ol'er early in the preseason until he was demoted 6-4/311
Coleman Shelton 27/5 6-4/299 is very versatile & valuable as the 6th OL main backup to often injured Allen.
Tremayne Anchrum 23/2 6-2/315 lbs is my selection as a leading prospective starter.
Alaric Jackson 23/2 may be the best run-blocking meanest OL'er of the entire OL cadre but he is over 6-7 inches tall far more LT.

Not so sure Shelton is a lock for RG. I expect to see competition there during TC and pre-season. Anchrum and Brewer will be in the mix.

I don’t know much about O-line responsibilities. I get the center and LT, but how does RG differ from LG?

While you want your offensive linemen to be strong at both pass pro and run blocking, they usually are better at one over the other, sometimes by just a matter of a few degrees, and sometimes there are vastly different capabilities. The primary job of a LT is to protect his QB from blind side defensive pass rushers, so having a quality pass-protecting LT is paramount, ... a better pass protecting LG can compliment his LT by helping cover gaps and ensuring the QB is kept safe. Saffold was a great LG because he was a converted LT who became a better LG, having a history of being a quality pass protector, and developing great run blocking skills, he was a dual threat offensive lineman.
RT's also have pass pro responsibilities, but they aren't usually as great since the better defensive pass rushers often work from the QB's blind side, and being that the RT is usually the lesser of the two pass protecting OT's, his forte` or larger responsibility is more likely at run blocking. Our own Rob Havenstein is a good example of this. Coupling a very good run blocking RG with a quality run blocking RT compliments their ability to work well together for the benefit of your running game. Obviously, the first order of business for any OL is protecting the QB first and allowing him the time to get off a successful play, and the specialties involved among the different offensive linemen will vary, so your OL coaches have the responsibility of getting the right guys into the right position and allowing them to build the necessary chemistry to function as a single unified unit.
jmo.

Good work BonifayRam. You're the guy I pay attention too when it comes to the OLine.

Thanks bro!
We have a super cadre of ROD'ers in here that know their junk about the NFL & the OL.

I just happen to have the time these days to read & try to consume all of that wisdom ROD'ers are putting out there for me! Benefits of being old & retired.

I agree. Had Corbett been re-signed I'd have preferred to have him moved back to LG while a new draft pick, Edwards, Anchrum, Brewer & Evans go to war over the RG job. jmo.

Been a long time since the Rams have been in this good of shape with the OL IMHO. Carberry has done an excellent job getting guys that haven't played a down ready. He's built a corps of starters that have developed good continuity with backups getting snaps in regular season games gaining real time ex,perience.

Noteboom will start at LG. Although not the All-Pro Big Whit , he's proved to be more than capable. there. I see Aleric Jackson, who also got time at LT and did very well, as Noteboom's backup with his injury history.

Some see Edwards as the weakest link on the OL but I don't. I think he has gotten better and has played solid LG. Some suggest Edwards be moved to RG. I think Carburry keeps him there to not upset continuity.

Allen extension leaves no doubt starting c is his job to lose. I see Shelton still on the bench and Allen's backup. Some here have speculated Shelton at RG. but I think Carberry will keep him for 1st off the bench interrior OL backup.

RG is the one OL position that is open for competition. Several guys will get playing time during TC and pre-season. Brewer, Kolone, Anchrum are my top 3 for getting the RG job.

Anchrum played a lot of RT last TC and pre-season, I;m guessing mor of that and Anchrum being the backup for Havenstien

I'm really looking forward to watching them this coming TC.

Corbett was pretty good @ LG & I posted last week that I thought that whoever signed him in this case the Panthers would most likely plan on him starting @ LG.

I think Carberry has assured McVay & Snead that he has a solid selection of starting RG prospects already here & ready to fight it out. His guidance presented to his boss was to concentrate on the center, LT & #6th versatile OL'er which they did!

Posted somewhere yesterday of a very large list of Carberry's RG prospects & like bubba stated that OL vacancy is certainly not a problem compared to many other posts.

The worry about the RG post :scream:might be attached to what we saw in TC & preseason when Bobby Evans was seeing almost all the RG snaps with first-team OL & the damage that sight did to us & our confidence was worthy of a case of beer to help us get that ugly:crap: image off our minds.

Have we ever seen any past photo evidence from Andrew Whitworth's workout room where OL Bobby Evans was in attendance & working out the last 3 years?

I would like to see us improve in the run game. Way too much was on Stafford's shoulders in the big game. Improving that would make our offense so much harder to stop.

But they also weren't locking it down in pass pro. Which is why McVay dialed up so many runs even when nothing was there. They were good but not great there IMO.

Going forward I would move Edwards to RG. Then I would hope Jackson can win LG. He seems big enough to hold up in there and his feet stay oriented to the left in case he is needed in his LT backup role.

Shelton I'd keep behind Allen to push him. Having a good backup can positively affect that starter.

I was wondering about this too and somewhere in my not so great memory I thought there was a picture showing him working out with the group.

As much as the rest of the group puts into off-season workouts, I can’t imagine a leader like Whit allowing anyone to slack off.

It would be great to see Evans make the commitment and see dramatic results this summer.

Playing against our Dline every day should put all of these guys at the top of their game.

Evans has an incredible opportunity in front of him. If he takes advantage of it, it means big bucks a year from now.
He’s got the best traits of anyone on the Rams roster to fit that spot.
