Paxton Lynch tops Combine QBs on radar gun
134846.jpg

Memphis QB Paxton Lynch recorded a ball velocity of 59 mph at the NFL Combine, according to Dan Shonka.

We would not put too much into this, especially with Jared Goff checking in at 58 mph and Carson Wentz at 57. These "arm strength" measurements could be used as thresholds, like hand size and arm length at other positions. The standout number might be Connor Cook's 50 mph.

Ourlads’ Guide to the NFL Draft is the only source that gives the number for the quarterback’s velocity at the NFL Combine. Velocity is measured by a radar gun in miles per hour.

Well not one guy in the low 50s has amounted to anything... Maybe Cook's the first?

Funny that Lynch threw a 59 like Kaep too. Kaep's the guy he reminds me most of. IMO he's basically Kaep with a more accurate deep ball.

Connor Cook shows weak arm on radar gun
11280.jpg

Michigan State's Connor Cook registered a velocity measurement of just 50 miles per hour on the radar gun at the NFL Combine.

Paxton Lynch (59 MPH), Jared Goff (58), and Carson Wentz (57) all exhibited strong velocity at the Combine. Per Rotoviz's Jon Moore via Ourlads' Dan Shonka, Cook's miles-per-hour measurement was the weakest of all quarterbacks invited to Indianapolis. Cook also opted out of the Senior Bowl, which is where NFL scouts assess throwing strength live. A big-named passer in college, Cook is likely headed for a draft-day plunge. And there are several additional red flags on Cook not related to his underwhelming passing ability.

Some of the numbers over the years don't seem to make sense. I'd love to know more about how they do this. I remember, years ago that they just stood at a certain marker, and threw towards a radar gun.

Are they doing the same thing? Is it the same equipment ? Is the equipment calibrated the same? How many tries do they get, etc.

As far as the eye test, I was very disappointed in the lack of zip on Cook's throws, he looked better in games. At the combine, his arm was lacking.

I was really into Hogan and then I watched him throw outs at the combine and shrieked in horror. He can't put the ball on a line to the sideline. Everything had an arc that just hung up too long. You gotta be able to drive the ball to the far sideline. I like Lynch a lot at 15.

I never understood the Hogan love. Really outside the big three they are all pretty bad.
