I love this trade.
Young led the Rams last year with 12 sacks.
He had a better year, and for most the season, outplayed Verse. I understand that perception is just mine and may not reflect a players total value. They are also players with different games and skills, I get all that. Young was impressive to me until he got dinged and faded.
Garrett had as many sacks as the next 6 and change Rams combined.
He is also an elite run defender.
I really loved the Verse pick and I love Verse. I hate this deal for him and don't like to see him leave.
Supposedly, the options were one first and Verse, or two firsts and Young.....thats an interesting debate I suppose.
A couple of things to consider, this trade was made possible, partly, by the drafting of Simpson. The Rams don't have to worry about adding the QB in the next draft. It gave Snead a lot of flexibility with the pick.
Garrett is 30 in December. Verse is 26 in November. That is a big four years. But, the Rams were gonna be on a big hook for Verse extension after this year. Of course, Garretts price tag is big, but, the Rams can work with the deal I think if need be.
Garrett has said he wants to play 5 more years. That doesn't mean he will play at a high level for that long. He is such a physical one of one I could see him playing at a very high level for a long time.
The Rams saw their D fade down the stretch last year so, they attacked the weakness. The front office added an All-Pro CB, and good CB 2 and the best defensive player in the league in Garrett.
Verse is very good.
Garrett is considerably better.
I think this is a trade that moves the needle.
Hopefully not having to ask Stafford to carry the team to 35 points for a win will benefit him, his health in terms of shots he takes and of course the team as a whole. Running the ball and playing D still goes a long way in reality. If the team can only muster 17-20 points on a given week, they still can have a good chance to win a game like that. Passrush and coverage got better today, after getting better during FA.
If Shulda doesn't get a head coaching job after this year he likely failed.
Only time will tell, but, I dig this trade.
I wish Verse well and Im sure he will have a stellar career with Pro Bowls in his future.
