“This is what we are running. Stop it. We are not there yet.” - Jeff Fisher
Replace Brian Schottenhiemer. I know. I know, but see picture below.
At the very least bring in OL Coach Bill Callahan who was the OL Coach / Running Game Coordinator when Schottenhiemer was in New York.
IMO, building a strong running game isn’t just about upgrading the Oline talent. It also involves coordination and team focus. I’m hopeful that the CHANGE Jeff Fisher is referring to involves getting back to the basics and placing FAR MORE EMPHASIS / FOCUS on the development of a stout rushing attack as it opens up everything else for a team minus one of the rare franchise QBs. It’s time to cut down Schottenhiemer’s HUGE playbook and begin to punch teams in the mouth with a “This is what we are running. Stop it” mindset. Maybe the execution will improve with less to learn. More just playing and less thinking.
VETERAN MOVES
GOOD-BYE:
Davin Joseph, Shaun Hill, Alex Carrington, Isaiah Pead,
Scott Wells, Jake Long, Lance Kendricks,
WELCOME BACK:
Kenny Britt, Corey Harkey, Joe Barksdale, Austin Davis
CONTRACTS RESTRUCTURED:
Sam Bradford (incentive laden deal), Kendall Langford
WELCOME TO THE LOU:
Rodney Hudson, C/G, Kansas City Chiefs
If he’s not franchised or re-signed, the Rams are probably going to have to make him the highest paid center in the NFL, but so be it. Hudson will only be 26 years old, still has an upside, and will provide the team a veteran presence at the pivot.
1-10) Brandon Scherff, OL, Iowa
Here’s a college OT that looks like he has the potential to be an instant starter and perhaps All-Pro interior lineman ala Zach Martin.
New starting Oline: LT Robinson, LG Saffold, C Hudson, RG Scherff, RT Barksdale[I/]
2-41) Marcus Peters, CB, Washington
Here you have a 1st Round talent possibly available this late due to character concerns as he’ll probably be taken off a quite a few draft boards. E.J. Gaines was a find, but both Jenkins and Johnson (who struggled late) are in the final years of their contracts. Peters gives the team someone who could possibly take away an opponents best WR making the defense MUCH stronger via lower the completion percentage any decent QB compiles.
TRADE: St. Louis Rams trade their 3rd Rounder (#72 overall) to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for QB Mike Glennon AND the return of their original 4th & 6th round selections (Barron trade).
3-72) Mike Glennon, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Late to the party on this one, but if Jeff Fisher wants to go the traditional offense route, Glennon IS probably the best option behind Jameis Winston. Here’s a kid with all the tools to be successful as a traditional drop back passer in the league. But, just like most young QB who don’t light it up immediately, he's never had a strong rushing attack to help take the pressure off. If things go according to plan that should change for the Rams in 2015. Not only does he have the potential to be Bradford’s backup, but he also has the potential to be his competition. Much moreso than any rookie not named Winston.
4th Round) Antwan Goodley, WR, Baylor (re-acquired from Tampa)
At 5’10”, 225lbs., Goodley is a WR in a RB body. While probably not ready for prime time just yet, he’s said to have been clocked at a 4.39/40 and can squat 660 lbs and you can't teach that.
5th Round) Nick Marshall, QB, Auburn
Rocket Arm. 4.40/40 speed. Elusive. If this were 2001, he’d be Michael Vick. A CB at Georgia during his freshman season, Marshall has the potential to help the Rams on both sides of the field. At the very least incorporate a wildcat / zone read package for him.
6th Round) Jalston Fowler, FB, Alabama (re-acquired from Tampa)
IMO, it’s time to leave Harkey at TE and bring in a legit FB. Someone who can block AND be a potential ball carrier on called plays & in case of injury to one of the other backs.
7th Rounder) Traded to Alanta to complete Olgetree trade down
7th Rounder) DeAndre Smelter, WR, Georgia Tech (acquired from Pats for Salas)
This former 6’3” 220 lbs. baseball player was enjoying a breakout Senior season for the Bulldogs prior to his late knee injury. Smart, Good size, good hands, good work ethic, deceptive speed, and a strong blocker to boot. Put him on the PUP list / IR for the season and see what happens in 2016.
