It was a common theme this year (and since his arrival for that matter) that McVay's playcalling has been questionable.

After this Shanahan Meltdown 2, I sincerely hope he will have his epiphany.

Here is the entire 49ers fanbase's summary feeling at the moment (from their forum):

While seeing that post from their forum may warm my heart... it reminds me of the trash I had to wade through over on the old PD RamStalk forum.

Meanwhile... Andy Reid has been calling his own plays the last 20 years. He finally got his ring last night.

Nobody calls the perfect play every single time.... and even when you do manage to call the perfect play, that doesn't guarantee the the players on the field will execute it properly.

I love how it is all unravelling after one season for their fan base.
My son said all the KC fans he met before the game yesterday were great but the Niners fans were arseholes. He’s now starting to understand my hatred of that organisation.

Some notes on all this hoopla surrounding Shanny NOT running the ball last night...

1. Defenses get paid too. Nobody is talking about the fact that the Chiefs actually made some plays defensively that affected Shanny's approach and adjustments not to mention the outcome. It wasn't all Shanny and his mistakes. It's not a given that had they run the ball every play they would have sustained drives and scored TDs.

2. Play calls need to be executed. One guy here one guy there not doing his job can blow it up. This is why football is the ultimate team game. One guy not executing can be the difference between Shanny the genius and Shanny the idiot. Players actually matter, I know it's a hard concept for angry fans but it's the truth.

3. His greatest mistakes in that game had nothing to do with the decision to run the ball or not run the ball. He really called a terrible game from the head coach perspective moreso than play calling.

4. Where was the 9ers defense? Everyone thinks it's so amazing, you'd think reading some Rams boards they had the '85 Bears defense. But they got beat, worked over, and how in the F does that get overlooked again after the same BS happened with Atlanta?

I fuckin hate Shanny Jr. I want to drive my fist into his fuckin entitled face. But I think it's ridiculous how the postgame storylines ignore so much of what constitutes a loss.

It's weird how Shanny's offensive potency works against him in public opinion. His offense puts up 40 some points vs the Pats in the Super Bowl. The defense lets them catch up and win the game. But postgame it's Shanny didn't this and that. Well the head coach is a defensive guru, supposedly. Where the F was the defense???

Same exact story today. Get a stop in two of those three drives, even just force field goals, and the 9ers probably win the game. It's crazy to me.

I think Shanny is gonna learn just like McVay did. But both those guys are fine offensive minds and our teams are lucky to have them. Ours is also a better Head Coach IMO. :D

lol, hindsight ...

As others have pointed out, no one calls the perfect game, and even if they did there's another team playing defense and they're going to make plays too. If he calls the plays and makes it he's a genius, if he fails he's a turd sandwich. Much of our society works this way, politics, religion, social media... While it annoys the fuck outta me, I have to sit back and laugh at the dummies.

You can't teach stupid but you can sure laugh at it.

Bingo. Taking the FG on 4th and short in the fucking Superbowl? If that's not the time to put on the big boy pants then when is?!

KS played a big part in letting go of a 28-3 lead.

Come on man. The falcons were well inside fg range with an 8 point lead. All they needed to do was run the ball three times, make the cheats use up their timeouts and kick the fg to seal the win. But no, ratboy had to call a long developing pass play on 2nd down leading to Ryan getting sacked, losing the ball and recovering well outside fg range.

It's an indictment on the hc more than ratboy actually. He should have taken charge at that time and ordered ratboy to run the ball.

I never said he was perfect. Just that everyone overlooks an entire side of the ball when playing the blame game.

Oh and btw that same head coach still has a job lol. It's pretty insane IMO.
 
They were down by 11 with just under 3 minutes left. While his play calling could have been better, it’s not as if the clock was working in their favor.
 
I have no idea why Shanahan moved away from running Mostert. The Chiefs couldn't stop him.

And I bet that McVay watched every game in the postseason a thousand times. That's the kind of person he is.

He was also up by 10 with 12 minutes left and had the following drives:

5 plays 17 yards only 2 runs 3:04 taken off the clock
3 plays 5 yards only 1 run and 1:03 taken off the clock now only up by 3
7 plays 27 yards only 1 run for 17 yards the first play of the drive and 1:19 off the clock you're now down by 4 points and your offense is massively out of synch.

This was the #1 rushing offense in the postseason and #2 in the regular season this year. They ran the ball 8 times in the 2nd half with the lead while averaging almost 7 ypc. Shanny is a very good play caller and designer but the fact they got away from what got them there in such a fashion is something they should worry about especially since this was the second time his offense got out to a big lead in a Super Bowl and failed to score late in the game when it mattered most.
