Some are big names, others were lightly regarded reserves.

Let’s see…

Offense

Matthew Stafford. Yes, we all expected much from him but I think he’s exceeded even those high hopes, especially in these playoffs. No hero ball, just been lethal.

Cam Akers. I included Cam because nobody expected to see him until ‘22. Yet here he is making significant contributions in the playoffs. Amazing.

Brian Allen. Not an All Pro but he’s exceeded expectations from the spring without question.

Kendall Blanton. Yes, it was only one game but he stepped up and stood tall when Higbee was injured and really impressed his teammates in the process. He really exceeded my expectations and at a critical moment.

OBJ. Another big name but let’s be honest. His career had kinda plateaued and yet he was forced to learn a new system with a new QB on the fly after Woods’ injury. That ain’t easy. But now he has become a virtually uncoverable weapon teaming with Kupp for Stafford.

Cooper Kupp. Of course we expected a big year from Kupp, but the Triple Crown? A Cinderella season that nobody saw coming, I’m sure.

Joe Noteboom. Rams O never missed a beat when Boom had to fill in. Didn’t surprise me much but I suspect Boom exceeded the expectations of many.

Alaric Jackson. Gonna give AJ an honorable mention for that one game during the Covid restrictions where he played LOT like a 5 year vet. That was huge.

Defense

Greg Gaines. Everybody’s new BFF. He’s become a stud alongside AD right before our eyes. What a feel-good story.

ARob. Don’t look now, but ARob has morphed into a run stopping beast, especially vs Bucs and 49ers.

Von Miller. A very big name player and he cost us a 2nd and a 3rd. Heck, I was lukewarm about this trade, at best. But man, has he ever solidified that edge opposite Floyd. Been superb on contain even against very mobile QB’s and RB’s while putting good pressure on some dangerous QB’s. We’re not in the SB without him, imo. How do you put a value on all that?

Travin Howard. Such a pleasant surprise when he finally got his chance. This kid is all over the place making plays. Has hugely exceeded my expectations.

Ernest Jones. Exceeded my modest expectations for him this year before injury. I think our D got noticeably better after Jones became starter inside. Hope he can play in SB.

Nick Scott. One of the biggest surprises of all. Was drafted to be a ST stud in 7th round and now he’s playing like a Pro Bowler in these playoffs. I don’t see how Morris could possibly sit Scott now. Let Rapp sit except in special packages.

Eric Weddle. I literally rolled my eyes at this late ‘desperation’ signing. Seriously. But Dang! Weddle is not merely bringing the intangibles to this D, but is also bringing the wood. Leading tackler in 49ers game, I believe? This is kinda getting into Kurt Warner type Cinderella story territory if you ask me.

Special Teams

Generally speaking, after a very sputtering start, DeCamillis has molded the return and coverage units into among the league’s best. Kudos to one and all. Special mention for Brandon Powell as returner. I’d never heard of him and certainly didn’t expect much when he was signed. He was about the 14th candidate as returner, wasn’t he? But Wow! Has he ever been a breath of fresh air.

Well, that’s my list. Probably missed a favorite or two of yours, but it’s a helluva list, nonetheless.

Two things.

There are a lot of unsung quality assistants behind these listed players greatly involved with their respective development. I’m not gonna name names but I guarantee that McVay knows about each and every one of them. Some will likely be poached by smart teams this offseason.

The other thing is that without many of these listed players who’ve exceeded expectations the Rams don’t sniff the SB.

From your lips to God's ears ... or at least from your keyboard to Morris's eyes.

Might as well start off with the Stafford debate here again.

He certainly met or exceeded expectations just for the fact that they are in the SB.

However, I will say I didn't expect to be holding my breath worrying about INTs as much as I did. He is like the relief pitcher, who often walks a couple guys in the bottom of the ninth, but then strikes out the side to end the game.

He put us in the hole in a few games, but then plays great in the 4th Q to pull it out.

Even the season itself, his slump was a big part of the 3 game losing streak and the wk 18 loss, not all his fault, but a contributor, then as a 4 seed he rallies the team to 3 wins with the last one being another one where he rallied.

So exceeded, I guess, still a four seed though and I would expect most of us thought we could have been better than that when the season started, but he rallied them to the SB for sure.

Akers is a unique one.. because I had absolutely zero expectation he could play this season. Just absolutely amazing.

The expectations for Stafford were very high, and I'd say he met them. I don't mean that as faint praise.. King was predicting 5000 yards and 50 tds out of him. Stafford's been fantastic.

Gaines exceeded my expectations. I felt like he was a nice rotational interior DL.. but he's been a legit starter and a very good one.
I expected Robinson to be good, but he's been an absolute ass-kicker lately. Whatever light flipped for him this offseason with losing weight and taking care of his body and committing to the game.. it's been awesome.

Nick Scott in the playoffs. Different guy.

Brian Allen, for sure.

Cooper Kupp, for sure. I mean.. we have high expectations.. but he keeps raising the ceiling. He's turned into a superstar.

And don't forget the scouts who have done an amazing job of finding these unsung players who have beat all expectations and realizing that players like Von Miller and OBJ would rise to the occasion.

Gaines and Robinson for me. Both are playing at darn near Pro Bowl level right now. I liked both before the season started, and could not believe some wanted Robinson gone. But I am shocked they are dominating like this. Nick Scott as well, but his sample size is much smaller.

I'll also add OBJ and Von Miller to the list, as more recent acquisitions. I expected Miller to excel due to AD99 taking up all the double teams, but never expected this level of dominance. He has really turned back the clock. OBJ is similar, only I had much lower expectations for him coming in than I did Miller - he has blown right past them.

The "get rid of A'Shawn" stuff was weird, for sure.
Just watched some highlights from Sunday.. I know Williams wasn't 100%.. but Robinson fucking HANDLED him on a few plays.. and you just don't see that.

Robinson looks like a brand new player. He always looked good vs. the run. You could certainly notice his big body out there making a difference. But as you note he has been just man-handling opposing linemen right now... very nice to see!

Or maybe, Robinson was always doing this, but in the regular season I never took the time to re-watch the tape, as there was not as much on the line / media heads like Baldinger also were not drawing as much attention to it.... so it went unnoticed by those like myself while more astute observers had already clued in. I dunno though. He even just seems to jump off the screen now in a way he hasn't previously.

He had some excellent stretches in Detroit, from what I've read. But he was carrying a lot more weight.
He had some nice moments last season.
The biggest difference, I think, is his conditioning.. but he's also more agile. He stands people up.. but also chases guys down.
Not a penetrator like Gaines.. but blows runs up... it's been a joy.

Let's not forget about Skowronek. I know he's dropped his fair share of passes, but the guy basically is a seventh round rookie playing in clutch situations, and he's become one of our best special teams players, only losing out to Gay and Hekker. If anyone's exceeded expectations, it's him.

Agree ... He could be a core STs guy for a long time here and still be that #4/#5 WR that can step in when needed and could be used more due to his blocking ability. A nice addition that will get better.

Good catch on Skow, Memento.

I should have included him on this list. My bad.

Those reasons and Donald and Gaines both often getting doubled has freed up A'Shawn to get busy! And that's a good thing.

Nice work, lol. You just gave all the Dodger fans in here some Kenley Jansen PTSD. Love him, but damn, my poor heart.

I was going to say--Ashawn's been coming on and deserves more mention these days. And just look at his face during AD's pep talk!

The reason Robinson was potentially on the release list is because of his lackluster play during the season. The Rams would be looking at a $9.5M cap hit on him next season. His lackluster performance didn't justify his cap hit. IMO he realized that and has comeout and played in the playoffs the way he was always expected to play when they signed him. I think one of the reasons is because now Morris is pairing Robinson with Gaines instead of rotating them. IMO Robinson on first and maybe second down as a run stopper paired with Gaines makes sense. Rotate him out on passing downs. It will give them a way to rest AD on early downs as with Floyd and Miller on the edges they will be hard to run on with Jones and Howard behind them. If Rapp can return for this game it gives Morris his safety/LB hybrid he wants.
