Rams training camp: Sleepers to watch at every position on offense

Tyler Greenawalt
Rams Wire

The key players to watch on the Los Angeles Rams' offense are pretty obvious. Matthew Stafford, Kyren Williams, Davante Adams and Puka Nacua are the main contributors, and everyone else is either inexperienced and young or older and less productive.

But that doesn't mean there aren't some players poised for breakouts lying in wait. Sean McVay's offense is also ripe for some players to earn big roles with standout performance — either due to injury or just being a good player.

Here are four sleepers to watch at the Rams' training camp this summer.

Wide receiver: Jordan Whittington

The Rams got a small glimpse at Whittington's potential in 2024 when Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua were out with injuries. The sixth-round rookie caught 13-of-18 receptions for 151 yards in his two starts from Weeks 4 to 5 before he suffered an injury. Whittington finished the year with 22 receptions on 28 targets for 293. Whittington is a great fit for the Nacua or Adams role if either go down and could see some additional snaps to spell the Rams' two star wideouts.

Running back: Jarquez Hunter

Running back wasn't a clear need for the Rams in the 2025 NFL draft, but McVay and Les Snead still took one in the fourth round. Hunter, though, is very different from the two running backs ahead of him in Kyren Williams and Blake Corum. He's fast and an explosive runner, so it wouldn't be surprising to see McVay cook up some packages for the rookie to exploit that speed early on.

Tight end: Colby Parkinson

Parkinson was perhaps one of the biggest duds of the 2024 for L.A. after he came over from the Seattle Seahawks to replace the injured Tyler Higbee. So why is he a sleeper? Because the tight end room will likely become a bigger part of the offense this year as the team looks to incorporate rookie Terrance Ferguson early on. Higbee is aging and could still have lingering injury issues, meaning Parkinson has a chance to earn a role as well if he can prove that last year was a fluke.

Quarterback: Stetson Bennett

It's now or never for Bennett. He's third on the depth chart, but a good camp will either cement him as a possible heir to Stafford or, at the very least, make him an expendable trade asset for a team that is looking for a developmental quarterback. But if Bennett continues to flounder, his career will be over.

Offensive line: RT Warren McClendon Jr.

The Rams didn't effuse confidence in McClendon when they signed two veteran tackles after the draft, but that doesn't mean he won't be valuable in training camp. McClendon, a former fifth-rounder in 2023, started the first two games of the 2024 season and three more throughout the year. The Rams' tackle situation is tenuous at best with Rob Havenstein coming off offseason surgery and Alaric Jackson suffering from blood clots, so McClendon has the opportunity to prove himself during training camp.

Five storylines to watch for 2025 Rams Training Camp

Jul 21, 2025 at 11:10 AM

Stu Jackson

Rams Training Camp presented by UNIFY Financial Credit Union gets underway this week. We've already previewed some of the key topics surrounding each position group, and now we'll explore five storylines fans should be watching closely.
250721_FiveStorylines_16x9

1) Spotlight on offensive tackles

I wrote a little over a week ago about the offensive line's continuity going as far as its health will take it – namely at the tackle positions.
Rob Havenstein's two shoulder cleanout procedures limited him in OTAs, but he said in April that he'd be ready to go for training camp. Head coach Sean McVay indicated they would have more clarity on Alaric Jackson (blood clots) once the team reconvened for training camp.
Los Angeles signed veterans D.J. Humphries and David Quessenberry as proactive measures taken for a contingency plan, so they will be players to watch depending on Jackson's status, as well as Warren McClendon Jr.

2) Emmanuel Forbes Jr.'s progression

Forbes was an OTAs standout who established himself as an ascending player.
Carrying that progress into training camp will be crucial not only for his development, but the secondary's as a whole – especially after the vote of confidence in this current group by choosing not to draft any cornerbacks this year or add any veterans (excluding the re-signing of Ahkello Witherspoon).

3) Which rookies will begin to earn roles?

It has not mattered whether a rookie is drafted or undrafted – first-year players have often found ways to carve out roles in Los Angeles.
McVay previously said on the minicamp recap show that they expect tight end Terrance Ferguson to contribute this season, but it will have to be earned.

4) Secondary getting in sync with the pass rush

L.A.'s pass rush began to take off around the midway point of the season, and it benefitted its secondary, with 11 of 13 interceptions collected from Week 7 onward.

Carrying over the ability to generate those takeaways off that pass rush will be an important development over the course of training camp.

5) Impact of continuity at coordinator positions

This is the first time McVay has carried over the same offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator (with another coaching staff member in the role) for consecutive seasons.
The 2018 and 2019 seasons came close, but McVay was the de-facto offensive coordinator – since no one on the staff had the title – with Wade Phillips as his defensive coordinator and John Fassel as his special teams coordinator.
What impact can that continuity have on the team's preparation, and more importantly, its ability to teach the 2025 visions for each phase?

Where will the top position battles be during Rams training camp?

All eyes will be on the linebackers as Rams training camp begins next week

By Blaine Grisak@bgrisakTST Jul 19, 2025

The Los Angeles Rams will end their summer break next week when they report to training camp and start preparing for the 2025 season. As is the case during every training camp, there will be a handful of position battles that fans and media will be watching closely. Last season it was the battle at the third wide receiver spot. This year, many will be watching what happens at linebacker among other positions. Let’s take a look at the top position battles.

1. Linebacker

  • Nate Landman vs. Omar Speights vs. Chris Paul Jr. vs. Shaun Dolac
The linebacker position is going to be one in which everybody will be watching during training camp. There may be favorites on who will be the starting pair, but nothing is set in stone. Omar Speights will have experience from last year and the Rams signed Nate Landman in free agency. Still, nothing seems guaranteed for those two. The Rams also drafted Chris Paul Jr. in the fifth round and Shaun Dolac was one of the higher rated undrafted free agents.

There is opportunity here for anybody to separate themselves. The Rams will be looking for the best two linebackers and someone the coaching staff can trust to run the defense. Landman and Speights will bring experience, but Paul and Dolac have a lot of upside and are both exciting players. Again, Landman and Speights are likely the favorites. That also doesn’t mean that training camp will end with those two as the starters if Paul or Dolac stand out.

2. Backup Running Back

  • Blake Corum vs. Jarquez Hunter
Another position that will catch a lot of attention throughout training camp is at running back. The Rams drafted Blake Corum last year, but he didn’t have an impact in the running game. At the same time, the Rams just drafted Jarquez Hunter in April. This is a team looking for some explosiveness on offense, especially in the run game. That’s exactly what Hunter brings which is different from both Corum and Kyren Williams.

Many are hoping that head coach Sean McVay implements more of a running back by committee heading into 2025. If that happens, that could mean that more touches are up for grab behind Williams. The player that stands out the most in the passing game and in pass protection will likely have the upper hand. They also need to be able to keep the offense on track. Corum will have the experience from last year which should help as Hunter has a lot to work on in pass protection. However, if Hunter is able to pick up that part of the offense quickly, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him surpass Corum.

3. EDGE Depth

  • Nick Hampton vs. Josaiah Stewart vs. Brennan Jackson
The Rams have their starting edge players set in stone heading into the 2025 season in Jared Verse and Byron Young. However, with the departure of Michael Hoecht, the Rams will be searching for a third player that can rotate in when needed. They need someone that can spell Verse and Young. Nick Hampton, Josaiah Stewart, and Brennan Jackson will be competing for that role. If the Rams pass rush is going to continue as a top unit, one of these three need to step up.

Hampton is heading into year three, but has dealt with injuries over the past two years. He hasn’t developed as some may have expected, but has the experience in the defense that the other two don’t. Many will want to write him off and potentially have him as a roster cut, but it may be smart to wait and see on Hampton. While the Rams drafted Stewart in the third round, he will still be a rookie. He does bring some of the similar skillset as Hoecht and would add a speed element to the pass rush. For Stewart, it’s all about building early trust. Lastly, Brennan Jackson is heading into year two and is also built in the same mold as Hoecht. At the same time, he didn’t get much playing time last year.

4. Cornerback Depth

  • Derion Kendrick vs. Emmanuel Forbes
The Rams cornerbacks are mostly set in stone. It should be expected for Darious Williams and Ahkello Witherspoon to start on the outside with Cobie Durant in the slot. Still, there will be plenty of competition behind them, especially between Derion Kendrick and Emmanuel Forbes.

Kendrick was cut earlier in the offseason, but was brought back. While a confusing move, it was with the idea of saving money on Kendrick’s contract which had been incentivized due to him playing in a starting role in 2022. There will be a lot of excitement around Forbes, but unless Williams struggles like Tre White did last year, he is likely just depth. It’s very possible that only one of Forbes or Kendrick make the roster. For Forbes, he could be playing for his last shot in the NFL as a former first-round pick that is on his second team.

5. Center/Interior Depth

  • Coleman Shelton vs. Beaux Limmer
  • KT Leveston vs. Willie Lampkin vs. Dylan McMahon vs. Justin Dedich
Heading into the offseason, many would have expected Beaux Limmer to be the starting center. Limmer took over for Jonah Jackson in the middle of 2024 and never looked back, providing stability at that spot. However, the Rams signed a familiar face in Coleman Shelton in free agency. Shelton will be the favorite here and there likely won’t be much of a competition. Still, this is one to keep an eye on this summer.

With that said, the main competition on the offensive line will be at the depth spots. The Rams actually have some intriguing depth on the interior. KT Leveston was a late-round draft pick last year and Justin Dedich has some starting experience. Dylan McMahon was a sixth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles who the Rams claimed off of waivers. The most exciting player here, however, will be Willie Lampkin. Lampkin lacks size, but has consistently dominated competition when given the opportunity. Despite going undrafted, Lampkin could find a spot on the roster. Limmer can be included in this group as well.

Unlike most years it's pretty obvious who is going to land at what part of the depth chart this year is pretty intriguing to me.

This list of 5 is going to be fun to watch, particularly the first two battles.

1. I expect Landman and Speights to command the starting two spots for quite a bit of time with Paul working himself in there.

2. We all know I'm a Michigan homer and a true believer of what I seen Corum do but tbh if Hunter beats out Blake in TC and Pre season I won't be mad, it means we got a hell of a RB2 and RB3. I will say with Kyrens history of getting banged up and he looked a bit tired in that Eagles game I'd love to see these guys get out there with fresh legs.

3. Stewart is going to be our number 1 behind Verse and Young, he is very talented but not sure what his learning curve is. Hopefully he can follow Verse's version and accelerate quite fast past the first half of the year come time to closing out the season and playoff time!

This is the season I see Brennan Jackson make his mark in spot duty as a lot have written him off from last year.

Paul's gonna push for that job in camp man. I'll be surprised if that doesn't happen. But whoever wins those roles it means we should have improved play off ball.

OL is my big worry. Can Humphries regain what he once had? How long before Limmer takes over at center. Hopefully before Shelton gets Stafford pummeled. Hopefully one of the young OL steps up.

I'm not sweating the interior. Rams have enough quality to find a way with those boys. It's the OT spot that terrifies me. And Jackson with the blood clots just feels like doom.

Shit I'd be happy if that happens! Just always give a cushion for rookies as even the great Aaron Donald didn't start till what? Game 8 his rookie season?

While I think Pooh is going to be a hell of a MLB IDK if he'll make being in there before the middle of the season.

And now we shall pray to the injury gods,

"Let thy Rams brethren make it through camp and preseason with nary an injury. For the season is already dark and full of terrors. If though shall grant us this wish I give thy injury gods faitth and gratitude beyond measure. For you are the keepers of all our mental health for another year... amen."

Honestly, I think I love not only Speights, but all three newcomers, Landman (The Land Guardian, Guardian of the Land. ...I swear, I will push that nickname like I pushed "Kingpin" for Braden Fiske.), Paul, and Dolac at middle linebacker. I think all four of them have huge potential as starters, and it wouldn't surprise me if we did a rotation. I want all four of them to make the team (just anyone but Reeder).

And then there's Lake at the STAR position and McCollough to consider; both had a lot of snaps inside on passing downs.

When we face the Eagles in Week 3, it will be different. We are going to shut down Barkley because now we have the horses to do it, while also being good enough in coverage to prevent guys like Goedert from running rampant.
