When McVay got hired, I was so happy that we got rid of Fisher ball. The Rams lit up the scoreboard and it was amazing what a change of coaching did for a team that was mostly Jeff Fisher draftees. I said and knew that the Rams would win a Superbowl (or several) under McVay.

But it seems like McVay's philosophy is changing a bit. (I'm not saying that's bad) It seems like we are a run first team with Kyren WIlliams. But with that, I'm sometimes frustrated seeing us run on 1st and 2nd down and then giving Stafford only one chance to move the sticks. Not saying we should only call passing plays, but it seems more predictable for opposing defenses. Our scoring production is down and it seems like were almost always down in the games, at least in the first half because we have slow starts.

Is it because our O-line sucks or because McVay is changing his philosophy, perhaps because our O-line sucks or because his offensive philosophy is evolving?

I mean I'm sure Stafford could run the kind of offense we had with Goff.

Thoughts?

I really don't think his offense is that much different than when he entered the rams as HC. Yeah a little different running scheme with duo and inside outside zones. But I think it looks a little different because of the players he has on the roster. I think it pains him to be playing more 12 personnel than ever. But what do I know...

The offence always goes the way of the OL. We have been blessed with great skill players throughout his tenure but do not always match that in the trenches. If they can start blasting holes like we expected then everything could work off the running game. That said the OL are nearly last in the league in pass blocking!

Right now, our OL is a lot more effective run blocking than pass blocking. That is forcing McVay's hand. The offense has certainly evolved. And that's a good thing. He'll need to keep evolving.

The irony with this year's team is that if they could unfuck the pass pro their run potency they have already shown would put them in playoff OL category. Also then they would be able to get some early leads and let their pass rush tee off on opposing QBs.

So my answer is yes he's fucking evolved. The dueling going on with him and the best WCO game designers in this league comes down largely to run game design too. Because everyone runs the same fucking route combos. And when someone runs something new that works McVay and the rest of these guys copy it the next week.

But the run game is a bit different. You can only do what your OL can handle. If your OL are small movers then you're a zone team. If they're brutes you're a power team. McVay has slowly altered this offensive line to favor power run philosophy. He mixes it up, but look at this OL. This is a power front.

If we had a power back to complement them it would be something. But can't have everything I suppose. So just gonna hope they get the pass pro going.

There are going to be a lot of talented power HBs available on Day 3 this year. Question is if McVay actually wants one.

But we have to remember that the first thing that McVay did was bring in a bunch of veterans to rebuild the offensive line.

His best, biggest and first move.

I'd kill for Quinshon Judkins, if we're talking power backs on Day 2.

McVay's scheme requires certain skill levels at WR, RB and Oline. He doesn't have that. McVay lit up the NFL when our Oline was good and we had Todd Gurley.

I'm not sure where you are getting the run on 1st and 2nd down.....he rarely runs on 2nd.

McVay is like a crack addict for the pass.....watch him on the sidelines as he starts itching and rubbing his nose after a single run play. :)

One of the funniest things I've heard in relation to football in an incredibly long time.

Fellas, we still do not have that beast O line. But once we do all will be fine.
We just massively bolstered our D line in one draft. Do the same thing next year with the O line and lets rock.
Its all about the draft. Keep them picks baby.

The OL has also been bolstered in the last 2 drafts with Avila and Limmer. The team is on the right path building up the lines on both sides.

Nope. High picks, that is what I am talking about.
Orlano Pace type players do not come with 3rd and 7th round picks. 330 pound, 6'7" dudes with ballerina feet and freakishly long arms are not there in the 3rd round.
I am absolutely talking about 1st and 2nd round picks.

Well, Steve Avila was a high 2nd round pick; and the Rams don't have their 2025 second round draft choice, so it sounds like you want an OT with the Rams' 2025 first rounder.

I do like the idea of running more than they used to. I think McVay woulda liked to run more in past years but didn't have the horses to do it effectively. A combination of better run blocking and a pro bowl running back has allowed it happen.

But there are times when I want to see passes. I'd like to see high percentage pass plays on first down that has a good chance of picking up 4 or 5 yards. It makes running the ball a little easier. Or passing. Defenses don't know if its a pass or run on second down. Makes play action more effective.

What I don't like is an incompletion on first down followed by a 2 yard run. 3rd and 8 is a lot harder than 3rd and 3. I also don't like passing on first down when its first and goal at the 5.

Yup. Unless someone else falls in our lap that grades much higher.
