It all starts with Payton tbh. He fell a long fucking way from the Parcells tree (Bill P was one of the best at it) when it comes to working the refs. Belichick picked up that ability of quietly working those guys with comments and sarcasm, but Payton's too much of a bitch to use that approach so he's always had an us vs them mentality that isn't nearly as effective.

IMO that is one of the most underrated parts of being a head coach. Nobody really focuses on it but it's a skill you gotta master to have the full toolbox in that role.
