How could Dalvin Cook shake up the NFC West

Cook is a productive and versatile offensive weapon who has the ability to be very dangerous in both the running game and the passing game. Over the past four NFL seasons, he has been the bell cow for the Vikings rushing attack, averaging 269 runs for 1256 yards and 11 touchdowns per year.

Dalvin Cook is just 27 years old and has a far more productive and less injury-riddled career than RB Christian McCaffrey, a player the LA Rams pursued aggressively less than one year ago. While many NFL rosters are firmly established right now, could Cook shift the balance of power in the NFC Western Division by signing with one of the teams this year? Let's give a quick look:

How Dalvin Cook could shake up the NFC West

Arizona Cardinals: It is difficult to envision that the Cardinals would release veteran WR D'Andre Hopkins, just to sign RB Dalvin Cook. There is no question that the addition of Cook to the Cardinals rushing attack would be an instant and huge upgrade. Yes, the Cardinals have the funds to sign Cook to their roster. Will they? If they do, it will disrupt any plans to tank for a top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

LA Rams: RB Dalvin Cook could be an incredibly dangerous offensive weapon for the LA Rams. Not only would he be a threat to put up 1000 yards rushing each year, but he is the type of versatile running back who could also put up 500+ yards as a receiver. I like his fit with the Rams offense even better than that of McCaffrey one year ago. But the Rams haven't the cash nor the interest to bust their budget. Such a shame.

San Francisco 49ers: The San Francisco 49ers offense is already loaded with offensive weapons, and sliding in a running back of Dalvin Cook's talent pretty much would make that a top scoring offense even if the 49ers had a fan running the offense. A one-two punch of Christian McCaffrey and Dalvin Cook would headline the NFL throughout the 2023 NFL season. But it is still just one football, and the 49ers already have a feature running back

Seattle Seahawks: The Seattle Seahawks are an intriguing landing spot for RB Dalvin Cook, if only for the fact that they have just one season out of second-year RB Kenneth Walker. Could there be room in their offensive for Dalvin Cook as well? In theory, there could be if the Seahawks wanted it to be so. Their offense is better if they keep it balanced, with is best at about 500 passing attempts and 450 rushing attempts. If Walker runs 200 times, that could mean 200 runs for Dalvin Cook as well.

If Dalvin Cook ends up on the roster of an NFC West Division team, he will certainly raise expectations for that team. And he has the versatility and NFL production to deliver on those elevated hopes, too. If you want to see the LA Rams be as successful as possible in 2023, then you are likley hoping that Cook signs elsewhere. But if you want the LA Rams to optimize that first round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, then you could find that easier if the Rams face Dalvin Cook twice per season.

Once again…

Last 8 games:

Cam Akers
126 carries, 610 yards, 4.8 ypc, 6 TDs
11 receptions, 99 yards, 1 TD

Dalvin Cook
119 carries, 446 yards, 3.7 ypc, 2 TDs
17 receptions, 149 yards, 1 TD

Maybe Cook was cut because he’s not what he used to be. Akers is much cheaper, and has shown that he can be very productive.

This Akers contract year. If he's ever gonna take that step we've been waiting for, this would be the season. I'd say the Rams are smart to give him one more look. If he becomes that 1200+ yards talent we know he can be, they can re-sign him for the next couple years when they make another run. If he underachieves again, they move on. No harm done.

Why someone's discard is another's gold is very strange idea especially when the team already has a loaded RB room 3 deep.

Don't sleep on Zach Evans, he's a RB with speed and power who can also catch. If the Rams don't extend Akers, Evans is their insurance at the position. It would not surprise me if Akers isn't extended next year. On most boards, Evans had a 3rd or 4th round grade, and the Rams got a steal in the 6th. Evans is pushing 6' tall (5'11+") with huge hands. He isn't the pass blocker that Sony Michel is, but his running style is very similar with slightly better speed and a better receiver than Michel. Sony was part of the reason the Rams got to the Super Bowl. Evans is basically his replacement in many ways. Pass blocking is an acquired skill and if Evans can develop that he could be a good starting 3 down RB in his own right.

I've watched both Evans and Charbonnet and I like Evans better. Both are within a fraction of inches in height of each other, But what I liked about Evans over Charbonnet is that Evans is a more decisive inside runner and his big hands equate to better ball security. Evans is actually a bit faster than Charbonnet as well.

Evans is a very good RB very capable of being a #1RB. I can see him being #2 by the end of the season. I would love it if they kept Akers but I'm not convinced they will. That is the reason they don't need Delvin Cook.

I have a feeling we will see more emphasis on the run game. We should get a good look at what Akers is. Not really sure we should spend the funds on Cook.

The 49’ers are set.

The Seahawks are set.

The Cardinals are not a fit, assuming Cooks wants a winner.

The Rams are not a fit for Dalvin Cook the way we’ve approached the 2023 roster, either.

So… pretty likely he ends up in another division. Miami makes a lot of sense. Jets, maybe.

Maybe it’s time for cook to step back and take the RB2 role. Obviously, he would have to take a lot less $$ than what he’s used to getting, but he can still be a productive back. He’s proven and would provide some insurance.

Let’s not forget Akers’ fragility up to this point in his career.

A running game is imperative to the Rams offensive success and ability to protect a young, inexperienced defense. Should Akers go down, the RB room suddenly looks like the DB room with even less experience.
… but I wouldn’t make a move just yet. I wouldn’t want to take any snaps/time from the rookies and KW. Cook could always come after or towards the end of camp. He’s a pro. He should be able to pick up things quickly.

Can I give them both a hard pass?

The author of the original article can't watch much football if he thinks that Cook is a better fit for this offense than McCaffrey. What the actual fuck?

Cook feels very much finished as a serious player, I felt like his acceleration was gone when I watched him recently. Could just be an injury or something, but I doubt it. I think we're better off letting Evans get some reps this season behind Akers.

At the moment I'm feeling good about Akers. Hope he has a great year.
We can always get a decent RB.

I'd put both the Rams and Cardinals in the same bucket. He'd be an improvement to both of their RB depth charts, but neither is paying for him.

If the Cardinals want to pay him $9M a year, I don't think Cook would care if he wins 5 games. My guess is that he goes to the Bears because they have the combination of need, contention, and cap space. The Dolphins will be the fall back, but Cook will not be happy with the pay. The Jets are the wildcard if Cook can't get paid top dollar, but he wants to play with Rodgers&Co.

I would love to see Cook ahead of any RB on our roster, problem is would it be cost effective. Yes Akers finished the year off better than Cook but that is about the only selective sample size that favors Akers over their careers, IMO Cook is a more proven back and weapon. I am hoping this RB room is productive no matter how they get there, they have a lot to prove.
