Alex Smith's career with the San Francisco 49ers has been hashed, rehashed and hashed some more over the last several season.
Coach Jim Harbaugh is a newcomer to the conversation. He offered his take on the matter during a recent ESPN interview, including this:
He's been thrown under the bus here by really his own team and fans here in the Bay Area. His family has had to read things on the blogs that you wouldn't want anybody in your family to have to read. But he wants to prove himself here.
Continued debate over Smith, however stale, temporarily provides cover for rookie second-round choice Colin Kaepernick. That is not a bad thing for Harbaugh or the 49ers.
