Goff 2018 vs Stafford 2021

It is surprising to recall just how good Goff looked in 2018, and his numbers are not far off Stafford's. Even in 2019 Goff passed for 4638 (although his other numbers fell off). I am not attempting to start a war. I love Stafford and I loved Goff, and still hope he does well with the Lions. I believe Stafford is an upgrade over Goff. Perhaps the similarity in numbers indicates we will be back in the SB. Go Stafford and go Rams.

I like Goff. I think Goff preforms as well as Stafford with a legit run game. Without a threat of a running game, Staff is superior.

Goff had a much better running game overall with a primetime 2018 Todd Gurley. Yes, Sony has helped lately, but he lacks Todd's speed and catching ability. The return of Cam will provide a 1-2 punch that will rival a 2018 Gurley (until later on that season when Todd really started struggling with injury).

Frankly, Goff's numbers were better, but Goff also had a better supporting cast. I expect somebody will disagree on the former point, so I'll explain. If you look at their numbers, they were pretty much equal in terms of turnovers (once you account for fumbles lost). Goff has the superior yards per attempt. Stafford has the superior completion percentage.

The difference appears to be TDs, but that's misleading. The 2018 Rams scored 55 TDs. The 2021 Rams have only scored 48 TDs. The difference is that the 2018 Rams rushed for 23 TDs versus the 2021 Rams only rushing for 10 TDs. Our 2018 offense was statistically better across the board (more points, more yards, better yards per play, better points per drive, etc.). But that's where supporting cast comes into play. Gurley was a monster. If Stafford had a HB like Gurley, the offense this year would likely be as good, but Stafford might not have quite as many TDs.

Ultimately, 2021 Stafford is better than 2018 Goff. The reason for that is adaptability. Goff was an absolute master of execution when he understood what he was seeing. He was better than Stafford is. He was more accurate and consistent. The problem with Goff is when defenses fooled him, he couldn't adapt. Stafford can adapt. And that's an advantage in the playoffs.

For me, it's simple.

Goff played very well in 2017, and great in 2018. But for whatever reason, Goff's play regressed in 2019 and 2020.

So I'm glad the Rams made the trade.

Stafford has a quicker release than Jared and can throw off platform throws, but is more of a gunslinger that makes mistakes. 2018 Kupp vs 2021 Kupp isn't close, mostly due to the QB difference. I also worry that McVay's offense might be getting figured out, which contributes to Stafford INTS. Simply looking at stats doesn't tell the whole story.

Eh, Kupp was off to a gangbusters start in 2018. When he suffered his first knee injury, he was on pace for 1400+ yards and 16 TDs. That's not the year he's having right now, but Goff also liked to spread the ball around to Woods, Cooks, and Gurley. And then Kupp returned against NO with 89 yards and a TD and got injured again with the torn ACL in his second game back against Seattle. Would have been interesting what Kupp could have done if he were healthy that entire year. And our offense would have been a lot better for it.

2018 seems so long ago. Goff's 2020 stats is why he's in Detroit. Look how low the total tds are. 20 for a full season qb is not too impressive. And interceptions over 1/2 of the number of tds.

If Goff played like 2018 last year, we wouldn't have made the trade.

Considering that the Lions have been in a BUNCH of games AND Goff's numbers are identical to last year with us right now, something was going on.

Goff had Kupp and Woods all year, Henderson who started on fire and Akers who ended on fire.

Very odd that Goff's numbers would be identical and it's not garbage time stats driving it. Still not very good, but we see now that Kupp has always been WR1 material. Woods a great 2....next to what he's had this year that's nuts.

If I'm being honest, our 2018 Rams offense looked better to me by quite a bit vs the 2021 version. Mainly because we had TG and the NFL hadn't figured out Sean's offense yet.

I remember thinking that every pass that left JGs hand was going to go for 20+. Reminded me of the 99-01 Rams actually. 2 years later and I was holding my breath every time we threw the ball. Have been that way a bit over the last 8 games this year actually, haha. Point being, they are both very good QB's. They both also have pretty obvious flaws..... Almost like they are human or something.

Not to mention Goff may have won one of the biggest games for the Rams this yr ... A game that will likely hand the division to the Rams. And on a team devoid of offensive talent.

I think there's a better version of Goff to be seen.
I hope he and/or his coaches can find him.
We've seen how good he can be and we all have witnessed his errors.

That was a great time with Goff, Gurley, Kupp, Woods, and Cooks.
Seems only yesterday.

I've looked at stat sheets all year for the likes of Goff, Brockers, Quinn, Brown.
For me, these players, regardless of whether they've moved on, were a part of our reemergence and where we are right now.

Interesting stats.

You have to wonder what Stafford would have done with the 2018 Rams offense. As has been mentioned the Rams 2018 offense had better personnel. Better O Line and T Gurley.

Goff did make some great throws that year.
