The Rams and Chargers brawled three times when the teams practiced together this month, but when they meet in Saturday’s preseason game at the Coliseum, the true battle for the Rams will be internal.

This is the third of four preseason games, and at the conclusion, the Rams’ roster will be cut from 90 to its season-opening limit of 53. Next week’s game, though, is window dressing, the very definition of “exhibition.” For players on the roster bubble, Saturday’s game could be the last chance to shine.

“It just seems like I’ve been a part of teams every single year,” Coach Sean McVay said, “where a few guys you never expect to, they end up finding a way to make a contribution and give themselves some value, whether that be through special teams, or showing up on offense or defense.”

So who is off the bubble? Only McVay and Rams executives know, but here’s a reasonable guess:

Quarterbacks Jared Goff and Sean Mannion are safe, as are running backs Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown, receivers Robert Woods, Sammy Watkins, Cooper Kupp, Pharoh Cooper and Tavon Austin, tight ends Tyler Higbee, Gerald Everett and Temarrick Hemingway, and offensive linemen Andrew Whitworth, Rob Havenstein, Cody Wichmann, Rodger Saffold, Jamon Brown and John Sullivan.

On defense, linemen Michael Brockers, Ethan Westbrooks, Matt Longacre, Tanzel Smart and Louis Trinca-Pasat seem set, as do linebackers Robert Quinn, Connor Barwin, Alec Ogletree, Mark Barron, Ejuan Price and Samson Ebukam, and defensive backs Trumaine Johnson, Mike Jordan, Lamarcus Joyner, Kayvon Webster, Nickell Robey-Coleman, Mo Alexander and Cody Davis.

Finally, kicker Greg Zuerlein, punter Johnny Hekker and long snapper Jake McQuaide are locks.

That’s 39 players. Recent playing time indicates that fullback Sam Rogers, receiver Josh Reynolds, offensive linemen Jake Eldrenkamp and Darrell Williams, defensive linemen Mike Purcell, linebacker Josh Forrest and defensive backs John Johnson and Marqui Christian also will make the cut.

Then there’s Aaron Donald, who presumably will end his holdout one way or another and become No. 48. Remember also that receiver Mike Thomas and Troy Hill will be suspended for the start of the season and running back Lance Dunbar will start on the injured list, meaning none of them will occupy a roster spot.

That leaves perhaps five spots, and how will they be broken down?

The Rams figure to keep either running back Justin Davis or Aaron Green, and one of three offensive linemen: Austin Blythe, Andrew Donnal (whose current injury status makes this murky) and Pace Murphy.

Four linebackers – Nic Grigsby, Bryce Hager, Cory Littleton and Cassanova McKinzy – could be competing for one spot, as could defensive backs Blake Countess, Isaiah Johnson and Kevin Peterson.

The last spot? Could the Rams consider keeping Dan Orlovsky as a third quarterback? Could underdog hero receiver Nelson Spruce make the cut for a second consecutive year? Or will one of the previously listed bubble players make enough of a late impression to earn a spot?

Then there’s the wild card. Call it the ghost of Akeem Ayers.

A year ago, Ayers was one of the Rams’ final cuts. He was a five-year veteran who had been slotted as a starter at linebacker, and nothing in preseason games or practice reps indicated Ayers was about to be a cut-day casualty. Yet it happened, as a stark reminder that few roster spots are safe.

There’s been a change. In previous years, teams would cut down from 90 players to 75 after the third preseason game. Now it will be a dramatic drop, from 90 to 53 on Labor Day weekend. Up to 10 other players will have a chance to land on the Rams’ practice squad.

“I think the next couple weeks offers us a great opportunity to really find those last handful of spots that we will have,” McVay said. “I think being able to have 90 guys for that fourth preseason game will be a great opportunity for a lot of those playe

After the conclusion of the 3rd pre season game here's how I see the 53 player roster.

Defense

DL=6 total
Locks are Brockers/Westbrooks/Walker/Purcell/Smart..... with Fox/LTP/Sayles/Bryant fighting out for the #6 spot.
LB=9 Total
Locks are Barwin/Ogletree/Quinn/Barron/Longacre/Hager/Littleton/Forrest....with McKinzy/Price fighting it out for #9 spot.
BCB=5 total
Locks are 3 Johnson/Webster/NRC......with Jordan/Hatfield/Peterson fighting it out for the 4th & 5th spot.
SS/FS/Nickel=5
Locks are 5 Alexander/Davis/Joyner/Countess/J.Johnson with Marqui Christian following close.

OFFENSE

QB/RB/FB=7 total
Locks are Goff/Mannion/Gurley/Brown/Davis/Harkey/Rogers
WR/TE=8 total
Locks are Watkins/Kupp/Woods/Reynolds/Cooper/Austin/Higbee/Everett
OL= 10 total
Locks are Whitworth/Sullivan/Saffold/Brown/Havenstein/Donnal/Wichmann/Williams/Blythe....with either Eldrenkamp/Murphy as the 10th OL'er.

Total of 50 players listed above add in the 3 ST'mers you get 53.

So the cut down is now ? .... that's doesn't seem like there will be enough warm bodies for the green bag game ? ....maybe that's why mcvay played no starters? to give the backups and bubble guys more tape ... everyone knows they all played in game 4 that was the "make a roster game"

I agree with you on LTP! And I personally don't think Hemmingway makes the cut. JMHO

I left all the questionable stuff alone as you saw.....Its so up in the air right now so I find it best to just ignore it for some clarity. AS all these questionable elements now ongoing will one by one become clear just too many hanging around ....i.e.Aaron Donald, Quinn, Ebukam, Barron, Donnal, Tavon Austin, Ejuan Price, Thompson & now Temarrick Hemingway. Might want to say here that the final Master Roster does not have PUP's & IR', SUP, etc& so on type players on it so not all familiar names to us are necessarily releases.

Back to the DL.....Wade's D in the past yrs had 9 & 10 LB'ers on the final MR. Wade as we have seen in the last 3 pre season games uses a ton of his LB'ers mixed in with the DL'ers This line between the LB cadre & DL is very blurry & muddy almost as one big unit. Last night 5 LB'ers were very questionable elements mentioned in the first paragraph. The new arrival of Tyrunn Walker took field time away from LTP. Fox, Smart, Purcell, Sayles & Walker did the heavy lifting in last nights game. Later in the 4th quarter I saw Westbrooks involved in clean up action so something happened to several of those mentioned DL'ers but it was Sayles & Westbrooks getting most all the DL action late.

LTP is still in the running to make this roster but if Donald returns in time (doubtful) LTP stands a better chance to be released not Walker or Purcell due to the fact of the NFL game experience that the other two bring. Fox is just a better overall better pass rusher & much more active than LTP @ this time.

From what I am seeing Purcell is the main cog @ NT but can play the 5 tech just as well maybe better. Purcell is a beast in run defense. Walker is a little less NT more of a mixture of all 3 of Wade's DL posts. This is the first time I have seen Walker play as a Ram. I was please! Walker IMO is best playing both DE posts but last nigh he played LDE & shifted to inside in the 4 down DL base over the OC. I see Walker & Smart playing the 3 tech DL position until AD returns.

Ethan Westbrooks will be a starting DL'er & he will start @ the 5 tech post. I would be shocked if that does not occur. But I must remind myself that these big DL'ers will be rotated often & it really does not matter much who starts or who is a reserve they all will see just about the same amount of time on the field.

If Joyner, Davis, and Countess make it over Marqui christian.....ima be pissed Boni!:rant:

Stil too soon....some injury concerns...not sure about Donnall...I still like Thompson....and Cassanova....Forrest has popped lately...and look what Penton and dude outta Utah...the DB from Crenshaw, Hatfield...still too soon in this race. Should make for a hard hitting game against the Packers. No one should be safe on the defensive line...except Brockers and Donald...and he's not even here.

I would expect nothing different from you....;) For seasons we have had our only major differences & on-goings have been in the DB units(y). Right now you are trending to be more right on Mo & LJ than me:palm:. Your MO position is remarkable ....no MO is not like TJ. Disappointing thus far & concerning:cautious:. LJ has had a real rough time of it in pre season. He is far from what I would have expected. LJ was playing the Nickle when he was beat badly on that long TD. LJ was 5 yds behind the WR when the ball came in. In truth Cody Davis & Blake Countess have outplayed LJ @ free safety & should start over him IMO if this is as good as he can play.

SS Marqui Christian is a good back up SS but don't let him help wrap any Christmas Gifts for you. If Mo continues to play dim:huh: then Marqui worth rises considerably:cheers:.
