I've been saying for a long time they needed a quality QB2. Obviously, he wasn't my first choice but the Rams were going by a different set of parameters. I said early on that they could go one of two ways. Take a guy that projects as a possible future QB1, i.e. McVay's choice, or grab a good QB2 prospect who would provide them with solid backup capability for the next 4 years at an affordable cost. IMO that is exactly who they have in Bennett. A guy that projects as a solid tier 2 QB who can win games when called upon.
My problem with Bennett is his attitude. IMO he will chafe at being #2QB. That in itself is not a bad thing. But it can be a distraction as he could want out if he perceives he's not going to be the next Ram franchise QB. I say that because he simply doesn't fit the mold of what McVay seems to want in a franchise QB. So if the Rams do draft "Sean's" choice for QB1 next year that IMO won't sit well with Bennett. He will see it as another challenge initially but when it becomes clear that he's not the one will his attitude sour? Will he want out? I think he will.
Remember, McVay said very early on that it was LaFleur and Robinson who picked him out of all the QBs in this draft. What stood out to me when he said it was that Bennett was basically their choice for QB not his. I think he delegated that QB2 choice to them because he already knows who he wants as the successor to Stafford in 2025.
That is my only problem with Bennett. I think when it becomes clear he's not the successor to Stafford he's going to want a trade or early release, i.e. he's not going to want to stay. LA is not like GA whom he chose. He was drafted into the Rams, not as the potential QB1 but as a long-term backup and he knows it's going to be at least two years or longer. At his age he doesn't have 4 years to spend as a backup. He's going to want a shot at a starting position sooner rather than later. If the Rams draft a QB next year he will know he's not in their long-term plans as a starter I want to see how he handles that. Like I said that first year he will see it as a challenge, so it's after that first year that becomes the issue IMO.
This is why I thought Tanner McKee was a better backup QB who potentially could develop into a starter. McKee knows he needs a couple of years to develop. Bennett thinks he can start now so it's the impatience that concerns me.
