Thanks for sharing this, train. It's odd that you titled your thread like this because "waste" was the first word that came into my mind when I heard we selected Bennett I'm the 4th round.
Since then I've changed my position a bunch and have come around to the logical reasons of why they picked Mr. Bennett.
It came down to two things;
1) We desperately needed a backup QB. (Especially after suffering through the sub par play from last year.)

2) Sean and Les like Stetson Bennett. This actually should be the first reason. I came to the conclusion that we're just going to have to trust that Coach Mac knows what he's doing and go from there.

I didn't like *the guy*... but the investment and player make sense.

why? I mean you probably do not know him, he's a walk on that had to outplay a bunch of high profile Georgia QB recruits, a real underdog.

What's not to like?

The way I see it, they had their minds made up they wanted Bennett as the backup. For those who say they could have waited and still got him, well, there was a run on quarterbacks in the 4th/5th round. Chances are he woulda been picked up by someone else before their next pick. I believe 4 or 5 quarterbacks were taken between him and their next pick.

And remember this. He was not chosen to be Stafford's heir apparent. He's the backup and is an upgrade over what they had as backups.

I initially didn’t like the pick. However, if he turns out to be a reliable backup then it will have been worth it. If Rypien gets the primary backup spot and holds it all season then I’d be inclined to say it was a wasted pick or misevaluation.

The person. Kind of a dick, imo.
Based on what exactly.

I keep hearing this over and over again, but what has he actually done that was so egregious?
Got drunk? so fucking what. Didn't graduate? not even worth responding to.

If his teammates actively disliked him, I would worry, but cannot find any evidence of that.

And in watching his interviews, didn"t detect any attitude - see Zach Wilson and Jimmy Clausen.

And Mcvay, Snead and leFleur like him. So I really don't get it.

I am confused by the label "waste". According to whom? A draft pick is never a "waste". Some guys don't work out. Some guys passed over work out better. It's not a science. It's a projection. A bet. A chance. And in the 4th round? WTF is that? Can anyone say with absolute certainty that a guy picked at 129 or 130 is a better choice than a guy picked at 128? Gimme a break! To me some fans get a little over their skis. Opinion? Sure. But by then a draft pick is even more of a gamble because nobody really knows.

McVay liked Mayfield a lot last year, but we weren't going to be able to afford to keep him.
Bennett is the new replacement for that.

The real test for Bennett is whether he can accurately spin a long ball downfield to a streaking Tutu in full flight. We know Matthew can do it all day; we need a backup QB who can do likewise.

I've been saying for a long time they needed a quality QB2. Obviously, he wasn't my first choice but the Rams were going by a different set of parameters. I said early on that they could go one of two ways. Take a guy that projects as a possible future QB1, i.e. McVay's choice, or grab a good QB2 prospect who would provide them with solid backup capability for the next 4 years at an affordable cost. IMO that is exactly who they have in Bennett. A guy that projects as a solid tier 2 QB who can win games when called upon.

My problem with Bennett is his attitude. IMO he will chafe at being #2QB. That in itself is not a bad thing. But it can be a distraction as he could want out if he perceives he's not going to be the next Ram franchise QB. I say that because he simply doesn't fit the mold of what McVay seems to want in a franchise QB. So if the Rams do draft "Sean's" choice for QB1 next year that IMO won't sit well with Bennett. He will see it as another challenge initially but when it becomes clear that he's not the one will his attitude sour? Will he want out? I think he will.

Remember, McVay said very early on that it was LaFleur and Robinson who picked him out of all the QBs in this draft. What stood out to me when he said it was that Bennett was basically their choice for QB not his. I think he delegated that QB2 choice to them because he already knows who he wants as the successor to Stafford in 2025.

That is my only problem with Bennett. I think when it becomes clear he's not the successor to Stafford he's going to want a trade or early release, i.e. he's not going to want to stay. LA is not like GA whom he chose. He was drafted into the Rams, not as the potential QB1 but as a long-term backup and he knows it's going to be at least two years or longer. At his age he doesn't have 4 years to spend as a backup. He's going to want a shot at a starting position sooner rather than later. If the Rams draft a QB next year he will know he's not in their long-term plans as a starter I want to see how he handles that. Like I said that first year he will see it as a challenge, so it's after that first year that becomes the issue IMO.

This is why I thought Tanner McKee was a better backup QB who potentially could develop into a starter. McKee knows he needs a couple of years to develop. Bennett thinks he can start now so it's the impatience that concerns me.

I love a guy not afraid to compete, even moreso when he believes in himself.

Not bad traits for any player.

McVay delegates and believes in his staff.

Look… I’m not criticizing the pick or complaining in any way. And he’s conducting himself well. My feelings may change but I’m not there yet.

I’m also not trying to tell people they’re wrong about him.

That’s just where I’m at with him right now.

Who's complaining?
Curious as to why we needed an additional thread on this?
