Fernando Mania was a special time in Dodgers history.
He was far too young to be taken.

Sad day.

A sad day in indeed. He was the reason I wore number 34 all the years I played fastpitch softball. Went 32 years in a row wearing number 34. When I retired from work my co-workers chipped in and got me a personalized Dodger jersey number 34 with my name on the back. I'll be wearing it during the World Series in his honor.

RIP Fernando. You were an inspiration for me and my late best friend who passed 10 years ago. My best friend Marty was Mexican and always felt a sense of pride watching Fernando pitch. He'll finally get to meet his idol in heaven.

A sad day for baseball. I was too young to see Fernando-Mania, and I may be a Cardinals fan, but I know as much as any sports fan what it's like to lose a sports idol, and I know how much he meant to Dodgers fans.

May Fernando rest in peace and paradise.

Listening to the radio today really brought it back. They kept playing clips of Vin talking about him. It just always seemed Vin had a little extra excitement in his voice when it was about Fernando. Vin was always exciting to listen to but it seemed you could hear him smiling broadly when he was talking about FV.

I saw Fernando and the Dodgers beat the Padres at San Diego Jack Murphy stadium in 1984 or 85. He pitched a shut out and the Dodgers won 1-0. I of course wore my Dodgers cap all game and those Padres bastids knocked it off while I was walking out! Fernando was great!
There was always a question whether he was really as young as he reportedly was? I guess we'll never know.
