ST. LOUIS, MO. (Shane Gray, Missouri Sports Magazine) – In assessing the Rams defensive personnel and potential in 2012, most feel great about the possibilities at defensive line, cornerback and middle linebacker. Most at least feel the safety position is adequate. The one lingering concern for many, however, is at outside linebacker.
For years, the Rams have struggled there. Perhaps this should not be of surprise, though, when considering St. Louis has not used a pick on an outside linebacker before the seventh round since 2006.
Rams coaches and fans alike hope that some answers have finally been found at OLB, starting with Dunbar, formerly of the New Orleans Saints.
Dunbar, 27, will play the weakside linebacker for the Rams and, as of now, looks to be the favorite for the starting role. He seems to fit the profile of the type of player the St. Louis Fisher prefers there.
“The weakside linebacker spot”, according to Fisher, “requires great speed, anticipation, physical play (and) cover skills. (It) also requires somebody that understands the defense.”
