Ernest Jones is prepared to be a leader on the Rams' defense in 2023

The Los Angeles Rams are going to have a new-look defense in 2023 and they’ll need some of their younger players to step into larger roles. Following the release of Bobby Wagner earlier this offseason, Ernest Jones says he is prepared to be a vocal leader for the Rams in the upcoming season.

Jones is entering his third season with the Rams after the team used the 103rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft to select him. After showing flashes in his rookie season, Jones tallied 114 tackles, four tackles for loss, two pass breakups, and an interception in 2022.

During the 2022 season, Jones got an opportunity to play alongside a future Hall of Fame linebacker in Wagner. Not only did the young linebacker get a chance to see how Wagner carried himself on the field, but he also witnessed how Wagner was a leader off of the field.

Aside from Aaron Donald, Jones is now one of the most proven defenders on the Rams’ current defense. With the Rams looking to lean on some of their younger players moving forward, Jones is transitioning well into a leadership role this offseason.

Yet another pick looking to arrive in year 3. I am of course hopeful. Love his energy and leadership. But you gotta be a difference maker on film for that to matter.

To date he is reminding me more of Ogletree in that he has more name to him than actual film making plays. We are on quite a run at ILB in that way too, with guys like Littleton and Kiser preceding him.

Hope he starts producing.

After two seasons I would rate Jones as serviceable. About what you would expect from a late 3rd round pick. Not a lot of good things to say but not a lot of bad things either. Hopefully he outplays his draft status the next couple years and becomes a bargain.

Big stretch of an article I could have written that. Newsflash there no one left except AD not very hard to make this statement.

Really like Jones and think having Wagner in ‘22 stunted what he could have shown in year 2. He made some splash plays during the SB run and looked like a bargain in that, his rookie year.

At least he made a critical play in SB 56. He deflected the ball on the Bungals first possession on 4th down.

Great attitude from Jones but being a leader on this defense is more a matter of who is left instead of who steps up.
