On this Draft Day 2014, let’s take a look at which teams have had the most productive draft days over the past four years.
Without regard to anything other than total number of games played and started among 2010-2013 draft picks, the Miami Dolphins top the list with 1064 total games played and started (720 games/344 starts).
So, what did that get GM Jeff Ireland? Fired, of course.
Ireland, by the way, was just hired by the Seattle Seahawks as a draft room consultant.
Perhaps Seahawks GM John Schneider and Head Coach Pete Carroll realize that Ireland’s Dolphins were the only team to have more games played and started by 2010-13 draft picks than the Seahawks themselves.
Not surprisingly, the World Champion Seahawks are right behind the Dolphins with 1057 games and starts from their last four draft classes.
Seattle has been particularly effective on the 3rd day of the draft (rounds 4-7), having used a plethora of picks (28) to produce 15 keepers on their roster. Those 4th to 7th round selections from 2010-13 have played a total of 363 games with 156 starts.
Of course, most notable among those late Seahawks picks are Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman (2011 5th rounder), safety Kam Chancellor (2010 5th rounder), and linebacker Malcolm Smith (2011 7th rounder).
While the Seahawks have ruled the late rounds, the AFC Champion Denver Broncos claim the crown for 1st thru 3rd round production the past four years. Denver has a combined 456 games played and 301 starts amongst its top 3 round selections.
In contrast, the Cowboys last four drafts have produced only seven 4th to 7th round picks who played in a game (131games/22 starts), ranking 29th in the league for 3rd day production.
Overall, Dallas ranks 25th with 18 draft picks the past four years, who combined for 711 games and starts (458 games/253 starts).
The Cowboys have held their own in the first three rounds. The likes of Dez Bryant, Sean Lee, Tyron Smith, Demarco Murray, and Travis Frederick have helped Dallas rank 12th in the NFL in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round production since 2010 (326 games/231 starts).
