Maybe this was disclosed and I missed it, but this seems plausible.

My son mentioned this to me today. He read that Stafford's doctor, the one that has been treating him, while one of the Rams doctors, he is also known to specialize in golf related back injuries. So the thought is did he hurt himself playing golf?

He participated in the OTA's in Maui and then played in a team sponsored golf event in Maui. He also played in a pro/am golf event this summer.

Makes you wonder, especially since they have been cryptic about his injury if he hurt it at that team event?

I play enough golf to think golf does not cause injury but preexisting injuries can be aggravated by playing golf. That’s been my experience anyways.

Back injuries certainly can be caused by a golf swing... and yes in his case aggravating an old back injury is very possible.

Once your back is injured--major or minor--it will recur forever and always. No way to get a way from them.

Could be golf, but Stafford's back doc, Robert Watkins IV and his dad ("III") do a lot of high-profile work for several sports:

Football patients, including Peyton Manning (https://www.watkinsspine.com/football)
Baseball patients, including Clayton Kershaw (https://www.watkinsspine.com/baseball)
Basketball patients (https://www.watkinsspine.com/basketball)
Hockey patients, including Gretzky (https://www.watkinsspine.com/hockey)

Edit: Referring to either father or son as just a golf back specialist probably short-changes their credentials.

Edit 2:

Robert Watkins, IV, MD

Robert G. Watkins, IV, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon. He specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery, artificial disc replacement, and computer-guided spine surgery. He is the Director of the Marina Spine Center, past Chief of Staff of Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital, and current spine surgeon for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Rams, Lakers, Clippers, and Kings. He regularly advises the Los Angeles Chargers, Angels, Ducks, Galaxy, and LAFC. He also provides consultation for many professional teams: 15 NFL, 5 MLB, 4 NBA, and 4 NHL. He and his father created of the Back Doctor App, which is a comprehensive back and neck rehabilitation program. Drs. Watkins have given away this program to help hundreds of thousands of people suffering with back and neck pain. He is the author of the two largest publications on surgery in professional athletes for cervical and lumbar spine, as well as, many chapters on spinal injuries in athletes. He is regularly invited to be faculty for medical courses and a guest lecturer on spinal injuries in athletes. Dr Watkins, IV, has been named Top Doctor for the past ten years and to Who’s Who in America list.

I'm the eternal optomist. I'm hoping it's part of a greater good to limit his arm throws and have him completely rested until the first game. The NBA would rest major stars and have them dress in street clothes saying it was back soreness. Hopefully, the week before the Texans, his back "magically" has no soreness. For the record, Stafford had started a remarkable 136 games in a row with the Lions without injury until 2019 when he did have a back injury that stopped the streak. He's a pretty tough cookie. I don't see the back soreness being an issue for this mega stud. 49's fans, that sliver of hope that Jimmy G will be our starting QB is all a mirage.

He was working out and throwing all the way up until camp started. He was in Athens two weeks ago throwing to receivers.

From what I understand Stafford is pretty active in the offseason. He plays in basketball summer leagues, he plays golf, he plays tennis, and he obviously works and throws with receivers. Could be from any one of those but honestly you can reaggravate a back by drying your hair off when you get out the shower. Or from turning and checking your blind spot as you merge on the interstate.

That's what I thought it was due to. He was playing golf not too long ago and then the next week was dealing with back soreness and hasn't practiced since.

I know for a fact he has worked out throwing the football after the golf outing. He was at UGA throwing and working out just days before camp started with no limitations.

Never even crossed my mind........ Until now
But i have to say , it makes a lot of sense.
Your right "Does make you wonder" just hope it's nothing that
lingers very long.
