2022 was an underwhelming season for the defending Super Bowl Champion
Los Angeles Rams, one they’ll look to bounce back from with their available picks in the
2023 NFL Draft. Los Angeles has spurned the draft in recent years, but now, in the fallout of their worthwhile Super Bowl gambit, they may need to turn back to the board for help.
Note: Draft pick numbers are as of January 9, 2023

How Many Draft Picks Do the Rams Have in 2023?
The Rams have six draft picks in the 2023 NFL Draft. Two of those selections — a second and third-rounder — reside on Day 2. The rest are Day 3 picks, all outside of the top 150.
True to form, the Rams don’t have a first-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. It’ll be the seventh straight NFL draft in which LA hasn’t had a Round 1 pick.
The Rams traded away their 2022 and 2023 first-rounders to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Matthew Stafford in the 2021 offseason. The Lions also took on former Rams QB Jared Goff in the deal — an acquisition that was, at the time, deemed as more of a cap handcuff, given Goff’s regression late in his Rams career.
The trade paid off for the Rams, as they earned a Super Bowl ring in Stafford’s first year as the starter. But now, the hangover is hitting hard. The first-round pick that the Lions acquired along with Goff is now the sixth overall pick — a selection that would be very valuable to LA, as the roster ages.

Ironically, the Rams’ first selection at 37th overall will be their earliest NFL draft pick since taking Goff No. 1 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. It’s the closest Los Angeles has been to Round 1 since that time, and it’ll potentially allow the Rams to capitalize on first-round talent sneaking through the cracks.
It’s a bit more difficult to discern who the Rams might target at 37th overall. However, with pressing needs on the offensive line and on the edge, the 2023 NFL Draft class brings great value at both positions. Prospects like
Matthew Bergeron,
Cody Mauch,
John Michael Schmitz, and
Derick Hall come to mind quickly, but the choices extend far beyond that.
Along with their second-rounder, Los Angeles also has their original third-rounder. Past that point, it gets dicey. The Rams traded their 2023 fourth-rounder for Sony Michel back in 2021 and dealt their fifth-round pick in exchange for Cleveland Browns DB Troy Hill.
Los Angeles did add two additional sixth-round picks via trade, dealing WR Robert Woods and punter Corey Bojorquez in the process. But that still leaves a 100-pick gap between the Rams’ third-round selection and their next pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. There may be motivation on the Rams’ side to add more capital within that range.
