The present NFL reeks with defenses that are incapable of shutting down drives consistently.. I love watching defenses dominate offenses but those days are sadly gone.

Yea this post is actually wrong. Defenses are on the up the last few years. Less scoring… go google some stuff and you can see since 2020 offenses have been on the decline.

Seattle and Buffalo and Pittsburgh team defensive stats through 3 games look like they're out of the 1970s.

I think teams are going back to running the ball at defenses that were built for stopping the pass. Undersized quick DTs backed up by 220 lb LBs... Not a good combo to stop a good rushing offense.

Yep. If the Rams had a stud nose tackle they'd be just fine. Then on either side of him in the 5 man fronts on early downs they'd be winning all over the joint. But that lack of beef is killing us.

Maybe Davis can step up though and stay healthy doing it. I am hopeful.

Yup. That and more teams are employing the 2 high shell at least on pre snap. Basically asking teams to run it.

Yeah, the focus is more on limiting big plays, and try to hold teams to field goals. The old bend don't break defense that Frits Schurmer ran with the Rams in the 80's... for you old guys that might remember.

Scoring this Year is 21.1 P/GM so far. Thats the Lowest its been since 2006 with 20.7 It Might Have to do with Offenses Getting Greedy, instead of Taking an Extra Point, or not taking the FG, and going for it more. Teams are also taking Longer FG chances ive noticed. I kinda Lean Towards O-lines sucking and not anywhere near the same.

Thursday's Cowboys VS Giants had 8 Attempts at FG No one could Do anything.

We also dont have Brady, Brees, or any of the other great QBs out there anymore. Passing is way down. Stafford and Rodgers are the Last ones. Yes we have a few new ones but, The league as a whole, is got another Running back at QB.

Sack Rate is also WAY UP!
Comp rate is Way down
202 yds passing per game ( as they say in Baseball, At the Mendoza Line) Basically You suck. Doesnt Matter how good your Defense is, if you can Score for shit. Lowest since 2005

I detest the philosophy even though I concede it can work.

I think with rules nowadays, its just tough to stop the passing game in regards to not giving up points without playing a lot of zone.

Offenses just can light up man to man unless your team has a great pass rush.

Man coverage would still work if you were to be able to find enough studs back there. But yes I agree, because all the best athletes want to play receiver nowadays. Way easier to find receivers than corners.

What is interesting is your standard nickel down rush front is 4 man. And in that regard the Rams are a very stealthy team, i.e. potentially elite once their young players get some discipline in their rushes. So at some point this season we are going to have a top rush unit. It's coming.

I felt before the season our defense would be defined by our corners. Still feel that way. And it hasn't been all bad but the secondary as a whole has been every bit as undisciplined as our front. So not sure what we're gonna have come December, or if they'll be good enough to succeed if our rush is hitting.

Run defense of course is a whole other issue, but in the end points allowed is all about the pass unless you have an elite defense and OL.

Go watch the Broncos. Their defense is dominant and their offense makes other defenses look dominant.
