The "Hurry, draft Stafford's replacement!!" panic has been going on to an increasing degree since the Rams won the Super Bowl. And I have been shaking my head to the chicken little tune.

The guy is still at the top of his game and potentially has 3 more good years. Stop it, already.

Cowherd is sometimes a blowhard, but here he really nails it.

I was thinking that assuming Stafford looks as good as ever this year, see if you can make another trade where you trade one of this year's one's for a 26' two and a 27' one just like they did in this draft. Keep kicking that extra one down the road until you need it for a QB, yet still getting a two to keep adding players.

I agree with Cowherd. It’s not likely that whomever they draft to replace Stafford will ever be as good as he is, ever. So, ride it out as long as he plays well.

However, he could already have told McVay that he’s done in three years. In that case they need to draft a QB next spring.

Matthew Stafford's head might tell him he could play another 3 years. But, his 37 year old (now) body that has already had multiple injuries could tell him to call it quits earlier.

It doesn't hurt to have his replacement already on the roster for a seamless transition.

It took some teams playing out the string years to find their next franchise QB. And some teams are still looking.

That's probably why they say not to pass up on the opportunity to nab a franchise QB because that opportunity doesn't come that often.

This is the most sober take regarding this Ive heard.

38 is the new 32.

The good thing is the Rams have almost a full year before they have to make a decision.

Can see how Stafford performs, how Stafford is feeling, how bad the Falcons tank, and how deep the 2026 QB crop will be. "A lot of layers to it", as McVay would say, lol.

Between now and next April the Rams will spend thousands of hours discussing whether or not to draft a QB, and I trust they'll make a wise choice.

Its interesting teams that have had great fortune in drafting HOF level QBs.
Or guys that have that level of success/stats.
The Packers with Favre and Rodgers.
The Whiner with Snowy Joe and Young.
The Chargers with Brees and Rivers. Also now with Herbert who has a very high ceiling.
Drafting back to back HOF level (some debatable) does not guarantee multiple titles with each QB.
The Rams should be in NO rush to replace Stafford.
Drafting a franchise guy next year is fine....its also fine if he sits for a couple of years.
As Elmgrovegnome said, the odds of him being as good as Stafford are not good.

"A lot of layers to these choices. We will look at all the different informational contours and do our due diligence. As you know its about the person as much as the player so there are a lot of immeasurables we will need to quantify....reps.....opps.....opps....key and critical....."

I can hear it already.

I love Stafford and hope he's here for 3 more years and another title or two. But I think there's no telling how much longer he's going to be around. The Rams internally probably have a good feel for this, but they're not going to say what they think. They're going to talk it up like he's gonna be here and everything's rosy.

Let's revisit this after the season. Given that he just sat down with McVay and hammered out an agreement that he can live with everything is positive but we have a full season and postseason to go through here. Maybe pause that victory lap. :laugh3:

Matty has 2 years left. He's playing well and we're a good young team.

Honestly in the short term, finding a QB also involves looking at whether or nit that QB is good enough to be a #2 immediately over say Jimmy G.
Nobody is rushing Matt out the door, but you have to balance winning now with the long term

If he was going to play 3 years I'd draft a guy in 2 years.

You want someone sitting for 2 years? That's approaching half the rookie contract.

Yeah, a couple months ago many people were citing Jordan Love as a good example of how to find continuity at QB.

But Jordan Love was drafted in 2020 and then remained a backup for THREE full seasons-- 2020, 2021, and 2022. Love didn't become a starter until 2023.

Frankly, drafting the next QB "too early" can be a waste of resources.
