Are the Rams preparing for 2023, or 2024?

Maybe a little bit of both?

The Rams have been active players in the trade market in recent years. If they wish to play that card this Fall, they finally have a full compliment of future draft picks to offer.

They’ll also have something else… the ability to trade for a player with an expiring contract and immediately sign him to an extension, thereby avoiding the one-and-done problem they had with Von Miller and, to a lesser extent (due to injury) Odell Beckham, Jr.

Looking at the crop of players who currently are going into the final years of their contracts, there are some intriguing names, including: Brian Burns, Chase Young, Josh Uche, Quinnen Williams, Devin White, Dexter Lawrence, Jonathan Taylor, A.J. Dillon, Montez Sweat and Rashan Gary. We don’t know, of course, if any of these guys will be available, but some might be, and others who could be good fits might hit the market.

The trade deadline hits after 6 or 7 games (depending on bye week). What if the Rams’ plan, to an extent, is to fill some holes with some low priced veterans and draft picks, try steal some wins early in the season, then trade for some key reinforcements and make a run?

Its just so crazy it might work.

I mean, I won't rule it out because nobody knows where we'll be midway through the year. But I'm not getting any indication that's the plan. The indication I'm getting is that they're accepting we won't be in the hunt in 2023 and are planning to go for it again in 2024. That said, if the team surprises early in the year and racks up a bunch of wins, all bets are off.

I suspect we might even be deadline sellers too. Let's say they get Robinson rolling in camp for example. I think that is a possibility since he's going to have a second camp and maybe will have shit down. If that happens he and maybe a couple others like Akers might get dealt.

And all that aside we may still be in that 9 win range and in the mix for the wildcard, depending on how the records fall out.

Or Noteboom if Jackson/Nsekhe are looking good.

100% looks like the plan is 2024. I think 2024 they could go “all-in” again with some big splash moves. It could be Stafford and AD last shot in their final year. A team with Stafford/Kupp on offense and Donald on defense + a few other big pieces could definitely make some noise in 2024.

Hard to tell where the offense is going to come from this year, at least for me. With the shell of a defense they have left, I just can't see them being very competitive. Would love to be wrong of course....

One thing is sure. McSnead are always looking for the next move. They don’t have the $$ to pay premium for FAs that could really make a difference but I wouldn’t put it past them to target player(s) for mid-season trade. We know they had interest last year in trading for a top RB and Edge player.

I see a pre-trade deadline acquisition of future assets via trade of present players EX: ARob, more than an acquisition of immediate impact assets.
Stakes and prices are higher pre-deadline when teams are looking to get over the hump for a playoff run just as we did.

I assume Stafford, Kupp and Donald are untouchable. The rest of the roster? I don't see anything higher than a 4th for anyone else. And that would be iffy.

I've propose a 4'th for Higbee and a 6'th for Van Jefferson. Several have said a 4'th for Higbee is too high, but a 4'th sweetened with a 2024 Rams 5'th might get us over the hump. A few have also said that a 6'th for Van Jefferson is too little, so perhaps package them together for a 4'th & 6'th from a team needing both a TE and WR, ... and there are a few. We should have a few draft day options. jmo.

Thats how I see it. We know they value draft picks as trade bait, why not find veterans midway through the season and implement them in, that way when 2024 comes around they are already familiar with the system.

If they pull something like that, depending on what they get in return somewhat, I'll admit, it'll be genius as hell since Akers is someone we probably won't re-sign plus Robinson ain't getting any younger.

I have a ton of faith in McVay and Snead, but it seems pretty clear to me that 2023 is being sacrificed for the future.

Only way a run in 2023 is remotely possible is if several rookies play out of their minds. Theoretically possible, but IMHO extremely unlikely.

No team can reasonably expect to be SB contenders for more than a 4 to 5 year window. The economics/salary cap rules just makes this too tough. We will never see a team like the 70's Steelers where they had literally 20 plus draft choices stay on the team for many years. That said, this franchise is sooo much better run than it has been prior to McSnead era. As fans it's really, really hard to experience this off season's band aid tear off. It hurts. But....since our coach is committed to the long term, the team seems to be looking long term to re-establish another run. So if it starts in 2024, well, it will be tough but I will be supportive and hope this strategy is successful. We are fans and live and die with their success. They run the business so my glass will be half full. I will never, ever forget being the butt of jokes during the 90's when we were literally the shittiest franchise in the NFL. I didn't stop supporting them then, took all the shit and loved it when the GSOT shut everyone up and our most recent run shut everyone up. We broke the mold in building a SB contender with all the maneuvering, trades of picks for studs and now everyone else seems to follow the model in some fashion now. Let's establish a new model and show the league we are not one trick ponies. It used to be F' those picks.....now it's collect those picks. If it takes a year to re-establish greatness, I'm all for it.

Tell you what - I get all the doom and gloom (for lack of a better word), but it cannot be worse than last year - at least we know going in Rams are probably gonna' suck.
I am still very interested in watching, especially with all the new talent (hopefully :eyeroll:) we'll be getting.

And while I know the draft isn't here yet, Vegas et al doesn't seem to share the tanking talk, at least not yet. Might be a fun year, as long as you're not a "SuperBowl, or I'm not interested" type of fan.

Plus - we're getting a new kicker, punter and long snapper - how can anyone not be excited about that? :laugh4:

This is what makes Tomlin's record impressive - 16 years and no losing record.

Unless we are comfortably above .500 and looking good, I'd personally be upset if at the midway point we traded a bunch of future capital for a guy like Burns. Not only will it take at least a 1st rounder, but, Burns is going to be asking for a franchise altering contract also. He's not on the level of a Bosa or a Garrett, yet he will demand to be paid like it, I promise that. Those high level draft assets are badly needed to inject the team with young and cheap talent, something we are in low supply of at the moment.

True and I don't argue, but I think Steeler fans want more than 1 ring. Tomlin has one, we have been to 2 SB's in the past five years. I hope McVay's record, if he sticks around for that long, will be more impressive than Tomlin's. Pittsburgh has a solid model and a captive market, I think in our market we have to be a little more aggressive when warranted.
