Can't wait for spring training to get underway. Here's hoping that Heyward becomes the impact player that the Cardinals need, Wong and Adams raise their averages a bit, Carpenter becomes the player I know he can be, Molina stays healthy the whole year, and Wacha returns to his old form. I think that Tim Cooney is going to make the 25-man roster over Choate and form a lefty tandem with Gonzales.

Also hoping to fate that we get Demi Orimoloye in the MLB Draft; he reminds me so much of a faster, slightly less-powerful Giancarlo Stanton.

Edit: Oh, shit, I'm an idiot. Please move this to General Sports.

Here is my early prediction for the Cardinals starting twenty-five man roster:

Catcher - Yadier Molina. (No brainer. Best true catcher - yeah, you are no true catcher, Buster Poser - in the game today. Will eventually make it to the wall, and maybe even the Hall.)

First Baseman - Matt Adams. (He'll rediscover that power stroke that made him so deadly, while hitting for average as well. Twenty-five home runs. May never be more than average defensively, but hey, he's a first baseman.)

Second Baseman - Kolten Wong. (I see much improvement in this talented young infielder's future. With a full season in the big leagues, I picture him hitting near .300 with ten longballs and twenty-five steals.)

Shortstop - Jhonny Peralta. (Don't expect nearly the year he had last year, but he'll be steady, which is more than we've had at shortstop over the years.)

Third Baseman - Matt Carpenter. (I picture him having a year somewhere between last year and the year before. He'll be a consistent force as a lead-off man, draw walks, work the count, hit for average and fifteen homers.)

Left Field - Matt Holliday. (Actually picture this year as the start of his decline. Could see him being traded to make room for Piscotty.)

Center Field - Jon Jay. (Won't have the year he did last year. Will alternate between Bourjos, Grichuk, and occasionally Heyward.)

Right Field - Jason Heyward. (Here is the guy who will spring the Cardinals into the playoffs. With instruction from Mabry, I picture him improving against lefties, dominating right-handed pitching, hitting .300, 25, 85 with stellar defense and taking Holliday's slot as the third-place hitter.)

Backups - Randal Grichuk, Peter Bourjos, Mark Reynolds, Aledmys Diaz, Tony Cruz. (Grichuk could see a lot of playing time, given that he can play all three outfield positions in a pinch. Bourjos might alternate with Jay and be on defensive replacements, but I don't see him having a better year than last year. Reynolds hits for homers and strikes out a ton. So long as he's a power option off of the bench, who cares? Cruz is the only option as a backup, as Carson Kelly simply isn't ready yet and needs to play every day. Diaz is the lone surprise; he beats out everyone else to become the utility-man.

Starting Rotation - Adam Wainwright, Michael Wacha, Lance Lynn, John Lackey, Carlos Martinez. (Wainwright is Wainwright. Won't have the season he had last year, but he'll be ace material. Wacha regains his form and pitches his way to a Comeback Player of the Year award. Lynn justifies our contract, wins a ton of games, and stays reliable. Lackey could see himself as trade-bait if a young pitcher dominates his way to the bigs. Martinez struggles early, but finds his true form late.

Relievers - Trevor Rosenthal, Jordan Walden, Seth Maness, Marco Gonzales, Matt Belisle, Kevin Siegrist, Tim Cooney. (Rosenthal struggles a bit and loses some of his save opportunities, but as he has more reliable options behind him, he won't have as shaky of a year as he did. Walden wins the setup job and becomes a steady option. Maness will be Maness: will give up more hits than he should, but will get us out of jams. Gonzales might just make it to the starting rotation if Lackey is dealt or if a starter is unavailable.. Belisle is a pleasant surprise and actually does well on a contract year in a pitcher's park. Siegrist takes a while, but he regains his old form near the end of the regular season. Cooney shocks the baseball world - not Cardinals fans - by nailing down a roster spot as a reliable left-handed long reliever.

And as a lifelong Yankee fan I have the ARod fiasco to look forward to. I remember back when he opted out of his contract, I was so happy and hoping they would not resign the prick. But George wanted that homerun record back in the worst way. As far as I am concerned Babe Ruth still holds that record because he is the only one that didn't do it with Steroids. Mostly he did it with beer and hotdogs.

I must admit, I lost interest in baseball a couple of years back. Last year started getting back into watching. I got me 6 spring training games to go to. :). A buddy comes down every year for some spring training. I will going to see some different teams play and adding in a new stadium(Nationals, Melbourne , Fl) for me. I live close to where the Cardinals play(Jupiter,Fl) Trying to fill the sports void while waiting for football to start back up.

Agree with what you said...except for Ruth holding the record. Single season belongs to Maris (who was a Yankee when he did it, so you're good there); career belongs to Hank Aaron. Steroids weren't in Aaron's era.)

Whoops yes forgot about Aaron. I don't think he used Steroids. However I still think Ruth deserves his own record. He did it in the dead ball era when nobody else was.

Totally agree. Also, not everyone in the 90s/2000s has roided up or taken HGH. I don't believe that Pujols has; he may have bulked up a lot, but he was a twenty-year-old when he came into the league. And he always had the raw power and bat.

If I had to bet, I would bet that Pujols did. ARod, McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, Hernandez, Manny, Clemmons, Big Pappi. None should make the record books IMO. Just another reason to respect players like Jeter, or anyone that resisted. Think of the temptation to do it......records, huge contracts, fame. I have heard the argument that people don't blame them because of the money they got from it. As a guy who has struggled with health issues most of his life, I put more of a value on my body than most. I could never advocate risking my health for wealth. Steroids are not good for the body.

Without any proof? Without any failed tests (and you can bet that he's had many tests done on him)? I'm not going to trash someone when he has donated half of his life and much of his wealth to admirable charities (Down Syndrome, helping the Dominican Republic, etc.) Unlike the ones you've listed (as well as Palmiero), Pujols, while he's been suspected by the some baseball fans, hasn't given us any reason to believe that he's anything other than clean. Same with Jeter (although you'll hear people claim that he did roids as well).

Look at him and the look at Jeter. Really? People think there ever was a time that Jeter use Roids? Did he ever have big home run numbers? Did h ever do anything physically out of the ordinary. He was a good shortstop for a few years. Jeters game was smarts and instinct, and character.

Donating isn't an indicator that someone does no wrong. Andy Petite took HGH. He is considered a good guy. With Albert it is just hard to believe that he naturally attained his size and strength cleanly. Maybe he did them for a while and then stopped part way through. Maybe I am jaded, but if I had to bet one way or the other I know which way I would bet.

I recall the day that everyone, but me thought McGuire was clean. And I let them all sway me. I'll follow my gut.

Whatever people consider him, Pettite was never a good guy. He lied for years about being clean, and the only reason he testified against Clemens and told the truth was for money. By the way, Pujols was hitting thirty home runs as a senior in high school. He was always tall and lanky before he filled out his frame. Is it really that hard to believe that he just actually grew into his body?

You bet your way, I'll bet mine.

Mariners fan here. I always liked going to games but I didn't follow baseball seriously until last season. Excited to see what happens this season!

I find baseball is better to watch live then on tv. But living where I live now Both stadiums (Marlins/Rays) are about 2 hours away. I don't get to go to many games. Used to go to Braves games when I lived near Atlanta and Yankees/Mets games when growing up in NJ. That is one reason I enjoy spring training games. Mets, Cards/Marlins, Nationals, Braves are close enough.

The Mets are my darkhorse team. Their pitching is just un-fucking-believably good (Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Zack Wheeler, Noah Syndergaard (who is all but certain to make this team as a twenty-year-old), Steven Matz (who is their second best prospect in the system behind Syndergaard), etc.

I grew up listening to Yankee baseball games on the radio while working in my grandfathers garden every weekend. I still look forward to working in my own garden on weekends with a ball game on the outdoor stereo

Red Sox Fan here. Worst to first again this year for the Sox. Good to see some baseball talk in here....its the one thing I miss about RRF, there was always some great baseball talk there.

As for the steroid talk, I think we are at a stage where you are guilty till proven innocent. They all took something if you ask me. It does not have to be steroids to be PED's.

I don't think anyone thought McGwire was clean lol, I think everyone thought he and Sosa were filthy but nobody cared because steroids in baseball was awesome in that moment.

There was a time that everyone said he was clean. When he was taking Andro and it was an over the counter drug so everyone said it couldn't be a steroid because it could be bought at GNC. I was into lifting pretty hard back then and went to GNC and got a bottle and I knew within a few weeks that it was a steroid. I could workout anytime a day as many times as I wanted. It was great, until my hair started to fall out. Shortly after that it was taken off the shelves and called a designer steroid.

I know what you are saying, but people were making excuses because nobody wanted to admit the truth. He had the Andro in his locker front and center for a reason. GNC made a fortune on that stuff lol.

I do believe there were a lot of us who wanted to enjoy the moment and believe everyone was clean. It was kind of the adult version of Santa Clause. We knew the truth but held on the a belief the records being broken were clean.
