Are all of you comfortable having Wolford backing up Stafford for a potential (God Forbid) extended injury or season ending injury to Staff? This is my biggest concern for the upcoming season, and it’s not even close. Every time Wolf goes in at the end of a blow out, McVay has him handing off. No confidence? Puzzling to me, that he gets no game time experience throwing the ball. Thoughts?

I am unsure about Wolford. McVay seems to have confidence, which should give me confidence.

Myself… I’d feel better if we had a guy like Andy Dalton as backup. Someone a little more proven.

Good topic. I look forward to reading opinions.

Bryce Perkins is the guy who I think would be an excellent backup quarterback.

We are likely to bring in a UDFA as a camp body, whether they upgrade to a draft pick might appeal to some. I'd like to see if Perkins can beat out Wolford for QB2, but I'm not really expecting the Rams to spend a mid-round pick at QB this year. jmo.

Wolford again, guar-an-teed!
Never understood the hate or dislike, dude earned #2, and yet took a shot we know the playoff game,, many could never get up from alone (vicious, debatable dirty hit), wasn't it ironically from Bobby Wagner or am I wrong, was it KJ Wright, I thinkWagner? Things that make you think hmmmmmm.

I assume Perkins is ready to take the job by now. Don't want to see the Rams paying for a backup if they can have a first-contract type in that role. Rams have this year and then ERFA next year control of Perkins.

Jamaal Adam’s. He’s only good for sacking/hitting QBs.

Next yr is the yr to start thinking about drafting a QB that has the potential to be a long-term back up and eventual starter.

And if 4 yrs from now Stafford is still a stud and healthy, you trade the kid, assuming he looks solid and is worthy of being traded.

This is a very important topic that gets completely overlooked by most. Everyone assumes that Stafford will stay upright for 17 games PLUS the playoffs. That is a big if. To hand the keys to the Ferrari over to Wolfold is extremely scary.

I would rather have a higher ceiling guy running the offense if Stafford goes down. To me we have to assume Stafford could get hurt so what is the least dropoff possible. I hope the brain trust is considering this. It would be a major mistake not to.

He ran head first into the meat of the defense when the guy on the bench had only 4 usable fingers on his throwing hand.

He should have been cut in the locker room for being such a dumbarse.

What backup QB would you feel comfortable handing the keys to??

There are starting QBs in the NFL I wouldn't be comfortable handing the keys to.

That's the problem.

Perkins is probably as capable as any others would be.

Exactly. Might as well have a backup who has some wheels and can scramble for a first down here and there to help move the chains.

I like Perkins calmness in the pocket too. He's got some good things to be that guy for us off the bench. :thumbsup1:

Btw re: Wolford I'm fine with him as our backup, but it just feels like this team should be shaving cap money off that backup QB position if at all possible. Perkins would give the Rams 2 years of cheap control.

Was Allen- Higbee missed (whiffed) on a block.was aQB draw & sort of a dirty hit?
Everyone started talking crap about Goff,so things change fast.
The appendix is why Wolford is being questioned in 2021 & the conservative calls.
The preseason will say a lot,but Perkins took a 53 man roster spot in 2021.Anyone wondering about the backup spot should know the work & knowledge these guys have of Mcvay’s offense.
They brought it that QB from Pittsburgh who had a good arm.
Stafford likes to play as many snaps as he can,not sure how many reps & passes in OTA’s ? IMO they bring in a arm though.

I've been saying for a while that IMO Perkins is a much better QB than Wolford. Wolford's limitations were on display last year and I wasn't impressed. They could draft a developmental QB next year in the late rounds as that looks like a deeper draft. Perkins was a ERA this year. Next year I believe he will be a RFA meaning the Rams can have him for two more years.

Perkins showed a good arm out to the medium ranges. I believe he still needs development in reading defenses and improving his arm strength and deep accuracy. Arm strength can be improved. Deep accuracy can be improved if the issue is mechanics arm strength related. After 2023 will be a toss-up whether he stays, but IMO he will leave because he's a better QB than Murray.

I think the Rams should sign him in 2024 to a 4 year contract. In 2026 Stafford's contract expires. IMO he could very well retire. That will leave them with Perkins with one year remaining on his contract. If he progresses on track they will have their follow-on QB already in house and acclimated to the offense. Perkins will be 30 years old at that time. If Perkins knows he will get a legit shot after Stafford retires I think he will sign a 4 year deal in 2024. Perkins looked very good in preseason last year. The Rams got a good long look at him and it was obvious he's better with legit upsides than Wolford. If Bryce continues to improve then the Rams may have something in him. At the very least they will have a good backup to Stafford and a possible successor.

I was very aware of Stafford's deep underthrows on passes he should have hit in stride. Was it injury-related or age? Regardless they need to be aware that this team needs better behind Matt than Wolford. Perkins right now is that guy. People don't realize just how fast Bryce is. Last year he was clocked during his play at Tyreek Hill level speed, not just once but twice. The Rams should know what they have in Bryce. If he ever masters reading defenses and improves his arm strength on deep throws, he will be another Lamar Jackson type of QB a true double threat.

So the Rams should make him #2 this season and if he improves this preseason they should look at him long term and give him a 4 year deal in 2024. His improved mechanics and he showed improvement on his reading skills all after one year of NFL level coaching. I'm excited to see if he continues to build on the last two years. I think he will because that much improvement in one year showed commitment. This kid is good. Improve his arm strength and consistency and the Rams might have struck gold with him. At the very least they might have trade bait a la Jimmy G when he was with the Pats.

Reason #1, #2 & #3 as to why Wolford is and will be the "backup QB"

What team has a back up QB that can compete in this league and is not a drain on the cap?

What do any of us know about the Rams and Wolford? He has a contract, he knows the offense, he can manage a game.

There is no one in this draft that I know of who I would take over either Wolford or Perkins.

On the market?????

If Stafford goes down we probably have a 90% chance of losing any games he is not in. A different guy holding the clip board is not likely to change that.
