That 1978-79 team had two corners (Rod Perry and Pat Thomas) who each had 8 interceptions. I don't recall that happening in my lifetime. They were my favorite players that year. Both Perry and Thomas were listed as being 5'-9" 187 pounds. Ironically, after such a great season the game winning TD in that Superbowl for the Steelers, was just an inch or two out of reach for Perry.

Perry had 8 interceptions twice in his career. If you look through the interception leaders by year, you will see that in many of them 9-10 was a common number. Lester Hayes had 13 one year. Dick Lane had 14. In the last twelve years 6-8 interceptions were enough to lead the league. With teams passing more than ever, I would have thought the interception numbers would be higher than they were in the more run centric years. More passes thrown equals more opportunities. So, what's different? Better quarterback play across the board? Offensive schemes making it harder on DBs? Through most of the years when running was the primary offensive strategy corners weren't getting as much help with nickel and dime packages like they do now. They also played more man coverages.

Excellent question. Rule changes/enforcement? 16 picks (between 2 starting CBs) is equal to team totals most years. The last 10 years here's how many teams had more than 16 picks. 10, 6, 9, 4, 4, 6, 8, 8, 8 and 11. Back in 79, 22 teams had more than 16 picks, 7 had 25 or more. The Oilers had 34 and the Bears 29 for conference leaders. In the last 10 years, 3 teams have had 25 picks. Dallas 26 in 2021, N. England 25 in 2019 and Chicago 27 in 2018. The last 5 years just 8 teams had had 20 or more. So what gives?
