The 2022 San Francisco 49’ers Thread

This THREAD is for general, perhaps smaller news about a divisional rival. A place to keep tabs with news about The 49’ers. And, for general trash talking when you feel like it.

Major topics, such as Trey Lance benched should be stand-alone topics.

What will the 49ers do with Jimmy Garoppolo?

They’ve been trying to trade him. They may have missed their window to maximize the return. So what will the 49ers do with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo?

It’s a complicated situation, to put it mildly. He’s due to make more than $25 million in the final year of his current contract. He’s recovering from shoulder surgery. Last year, the 49ers invested three first-round picks and a third-rounder in Trey Lance. They’ve also given a one-year, $2 million contract to Nate Sudfeld, a clear signal that he’ll potentially be the backup to Lance.

We’d heard the 49ers had been telling interested teams they have an offer of two second-round picks. If they did, they should have taken it. If they did, they surely don’t have it now.

At some point, they may have nothing. Even if they do, is it a team Garoppolo will want to join? If the new team wants him to extend his contract as part of the trade, will he decline? He’s got leverage.

So do the 49ers. With none of the money guaranteed, they can squat on him until the eve of the start of the regular season, waiting for an injury elsewhere to create an immediate need for Garoppolo or ultimately cutting him.

The sooner they move on, the sooner they’ll clear $25 million in cap space. That can be diverted to other players who have earned second deals, such as Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel. They’ll also officially commence the process of persuading the rest of the locker room to pivot from the popular Garoppolo to Lance.

There’s one other possibility. They could keep him. They could even re-do his deal to convert some of the money he’s due to earn into incentives, based on playing time and/or performance. Let him compete. If he’s better than Lance, let him play.

Lance is the great unknown in this analysis. Only coach Kyle Shanahan knows if he’s ready to entrust the offense to Lance. If Shanahan is, goodbye Jimmy. If Shanahan has doubts, and if they can’t get a good return for Garoppolo, maybe they keep him for another year.

However it plays out, there aren’t many open seats on the quarterback carousel. The Texans stand out the most. The Panthers remain unsettled. The Falcons are a possibility, too. The Seahawks could be a destination, if the 49ers are willing to trade him in the division.

It’s definitely a conundrum for the 49ers. With the league convening over the next few days in Florida for the first in-person annual meetings since 2019, maybe the 49ers can finally find a willing taker for Garoppolo, at an acceptable price. If not, the next move is anyone’s guess.

IMO SF remains the primary competitor of the Rams in the NFCW. Everything hinges upon the development of Trey Lance. Again I caution don't sleep on this kid. He has legit upsides and can become a very good QB. It's really a matter of how long it will take. If he's on track that breakout year will be next year.

Are we down to Panthers and Seattle with openings?

Panthers would be a stretch with Darnold there.

No way he goes to Seattle.

Who is left? Texans probably ride with Mills.

The 49ers took the wait and see approach on an injured QB. The fact they got greedy believing they had more than they thought is funny.

Well all it could take is an injury to some teams starter this summer to get interest in Garapolo heated up. I believe his shoulder and the asking price scared off any suitors. Maybe the Niners will eventually get their price.

What do you get when you cross a 49er fan with a Cowboy fan?

Didn’t see anything there about football fans? I guess the real question should be , what do you get when you don’t sell playoff tickets to Niner Fans at SOFI( field) stadium. A Full House Niner Fans!!

You get the same thing in the preseason with Cowboy fans.
Jerry & Stan are going to be neighbors during training camp days.
Well an hour plus away from each other. BubbaRam is going to love that with $6 a gallon for gas.

RUMOR: The reason 49ers may be forced to cut Jimmy Garoppolo

The San Francisco 49ers have been very open with working together alongside quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo regarding his future, one likely away from the Bay Area.

But while it was always assumed that a trade would be how the Jimmy Garoppolo era would end for the Niners, it’s reportedly looking like that may not be the case. According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, the “full set of circumstances” suggest that the 49ers will have a nearly impossible time trading Jimmy Garoppolo.

Via ProFootball Talk:

The problem arises from the full set of circumstances surrounding his situation. The biggest problem, as one league source explained it on Saturday, is the shoulder surgery Garoppolo underwent earlier this month. No one will trade for a quarterback with a $25 million compensation package after he underwent surgery to repair the labrum in his throwing shoulder, the source explained.

Jimmy Garoppolo suffered the blow to his throwing shoulder during San Francisco’s testy Wild Card win over the Dallas Cowboys. Any surgery to a QB’s throwing shoulder is an obvious cause for alarm. But it’s made worse for Garoppolo’s situation given that he had the surgery “without consulting” the 49ers about it.

The expectation is reportedly that he’ll be ready for the season. But that’s a pretty decent-sized red flag for any team looking to acquire a quarterback with an eye towards the playoffs this season. Any team that acquires Jimmy G from the 49ers could very possibly be on the hook for his $25 million price tag while having him look like a shell of himself, miss several games, or both. The risk becomes even more substantial given that Jimmy Garoppolo, even at his best, isn’t among the NFL’s elite signal-callers in the first place.

That’s why according to Florio’s source, all signs point to the San Francisco 49ers cutting Jimmy Garoppolo. They’ll have to do it before Week One in order to maximize the salary cap benefits of making the move.

Unless Garoppolo is willing to do a new contract as part of a trade (and why would he be?), a trade isn’t happened. The most likely result, the source predicted, is that the 49ers will have to cut him.

With none of Garoppolo’s salary becoming guaranteed until the eve of Week One, the 49ers can wait it out. But they won’t get cap relief without cutting him. And because he’s in the last year of his contract, cutting him would leave behind only $1.4 million in dead money — and it would instantly create more than $25 million in cap space.

The 49ers were said to have received a trade offer of two second-round picks for Jimmy Garoppolo, but according to Florio there’s reason to believe that it may no longer be on the table.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s future is still shrouded in mystery. As things stand, he’s still a member of the San Francisco 49ers. The option to actually keep him is still on the table given the uncertainty with his heir apparent in Trey Lance. But assuming they want their clean slate and can’t find a dance partner, Jimmy G have have to get the ax.

Two second round picks and they didn’t jump on it?!? “He who hesitates is lost”. $25 million could have come in handy in free agency.
