My family and I shall be attending our first ever NFL game this Sunday. We are visiting from the UK and have little knowledge in the finer details of the sport. This isn’t really a problem but what I would like some help with is pre game. I have been told you do something called tailgating. This is something that doesn’t happen at UK sports before games so I’d like to know what to expect and how best to enjoy the occasion.

Awesome, Mercurystar. Your family will love it. I have only attended NFL games in Buffalo, so I really can't explain what will happen in LA, but everyone will probably be partying, eating, drinking, and sharing everything! I've had strangers handing me sausage sandwiches in Buffalo as I walked past them to get to the game! The tailgating is better than the game! Get to the stadium a couple hours in advance, and bring lots of food and drink. I'm sure people on this site will catch up with you in the parking lot. Hope you have a great trip all around! Cheers!

Me personally, I find it's better to have a plan when it comes to actual Tailgating in the lots.
Besides actual Tailgating you have a couple great options. There is a new (2nd year) small complex called "The Fields". It's attached to the west side of the new soccer stadium and lies between the soccer stadium and the Coliseum. They open at either 10:30 or 11am I believe. In there you have a few food and beer/drink options. 2nd option is waiting till 11 when the gates open. Go in gate 1 (south side of the coliseum) and right to the right about 30 meters is the "Corona Beach Club. Nice open outdoor area to have beers. On the East side of the Beach Club you will see a open air area full of Higher end food trucks. Lot's of good stuff there for eats!
Tailgating itself is done in specifically designated parking lots. Cars crammed in with their 10'x10' canopies, BBQ's and ice chests. We normally tailgate, but scaled it back big time this year. Tailgating is lot's of fun with the right folks and scenario. Having the Fields and Corona Beach Club are GREAT alternatives though!

I pay for good parking when I go to the Coliseum. Whichever lot you wind up in just stop and chat with the natives. Usually there will be visible signs of the tailgate so get there early and make friends.
And before you leave LA stop at a taco shop and get yourself a carnitas burrito. You can even get crazy with a Cali burrito it'll have fries in it too lol.
In 'n Out is a big draw too, cheapest burgers around for some fine American cuisine. Have fun and get pics!

Thanks for the information so far. How would you recommend we get to the game. We’re staying near Hollywood boulevard so wasn’t sure whether to drive to the game or get there by some other means. If I did take the hire car would I need to arrange parking in advance?

Ya, this is what I was thinking.
"Tailgating" is when you sit on the tailgate of your pickup and eat and drink, watch fireworks and etc. On this Sunday you'll be waiting for a football game to start. Basically hanging-out in the parking lot near your car (or someone else's)
You need to meet some others who are throwing a "tailgate" and meet them there.

Sure would! I haven't heard anyone here say they're hosting a tailgate this week though. I know I'm not. When I was hosting the last 3 years (2016-2018) I advertised every week to get ROD folks involved. I've had a lot more fun this year doing the Fields/Corona Beach Club gig.
To the OP, like I mentioned earlier, the Fields, and Corona Beach Club are excellent options. Just as good atmosphere and more comfortable than actual Tailgating. You will have lots of fun at either, or both places!
As far as getting to the game you have a few options. Rent a car, go a few hours early and park around the stadium. That will cost you $40-100 in parking on someones lawn. Or early enough and you might get lucky to find street parking a block or so away. If that's the route you want to take post it here and I will give you some exacts. Option 2 is you can UBER in and out. In is easy, out you might have to wait an hour after the game for the surge pricing to go down. 3rd option, hire a driver. Definitely the most expensive option but might be worth it for having your family with you.

Whatever you do make sure you buy a bacon wrapped hot dog from one of the little vendors outside of the stadium. It will change your life.

We have a rental car already and are driving up to Hollywood to our hotel on the day of the game. I did think maybe public transport might be an option so I could partake in a few beers.

Please forgive my poor map editing skills. Here is a map of the general area. Designated spot #1 is a small lot nestled against the east side of the 110 freeway and Martin Luther King Blvd. They charge I believe $60. There is Tailgating in that lot, but you can just park there. Designated spot #2 is the area south of the Coliseum. This area is residential. If you get there early enough, at least 3 hours before, you might find a street spot on one of these streets for free. If a resident approaches you and asks if you want your car watched after for a fee, usually $20, I would recommend doing it. Can't hurt. Hope this helps! Hope you and your family enjoy the game! Oh..... if you park in the residential area as you walk to the stadium you will pass through the tailgating lots. Lot 6 will be on your right, lots 4 and 5 will be on your left.
